Pat Erskine was fatally stabbed in a
house of 111-lame at Americas Sunday
evening. It is not known who did the
stabbing.
Mrs. I., W, Parrott, a widow, living nine
miles southeast of Valdosta, hud her cot
ton house destroyed by lire. She lost the
building and $100 wort h of cotton.
The gin house of Sir. Robert Young, in 1
Putnam county, was burned Saturday nf- I
ternoon. Eight bales of cotton, besides j
2000 bushels of cotton seed,were consumed. '
The total loss will foot up $1000.
Last Wednesday Mr. Bob Compton, liv
ing in Terrell county, had an arm lacerated
in a gin. Amputation was necessary, and
the doctor cut the limb off in three differ
ent places before getting above parts that
were affected.
The North Georgia conference of the
M. E. church, south, will convene in Au
gusta on Wednesday, December 1—the
date of meeting having been changed from
November 24 by order of Bishop MeTyere,
who is to preside.
R. A. Grantham and Mose Porter, col
ored, had a difficulty nt Ellerslie Sunday,
in which Porter was stabbed several times
by Grantham. The wounds will prove
fatal. A warrant has been issued for the
nrrest of Grantham, but so far he has not
been apprehended,
Last Tuesday morning little Wil'ie Ben
Frankhuid, aged about three years, was
playing in the cotton on the place of his
grandfather, B. J. Grantham, in Schley
oounty, when he scooped out a hole nnd
trawled in head foremost. After a time
passed some one saw bis feet sticking out
of the hole and pulled him out. He was
dead, llis hands were by his side, and the
hole was too narrow for him to put them
down to push himself out.

A well has been discovered on the prem
ises of Rev. Mr. Hillman, of Taliaferro
county, the waters of which are possessed
of wonderful curative properties and
highly medicinal. One or two persons
who had been troubled with chronic rheu
matism after remaining in the waters two
hours came out perfectly healed. One of
them, a negro, had been unable to use his
arm lor years; after a trial of the virtues
of the water, lias regained the comnlete
and perfect use of his arm. Mr. Hillman
was affected with sore eyes and was healed
by the water.
Waynesboro was the .scene Sunday night
of a killing. Three men—Bill Davis, Louis
Winter and another—were on their way
home from town. Just after passing the

Mr. Winter recognized one who had gross
ly insulted him last spring. Mr. Winter j
got out of his buggy nnd with his whip be- j
gan to beat the negro. All of the negroes

then Sprang from the wagon, attacked
Winter with rails and knocked him down, j
breaking his arm. Just as the negroes |
s ruck Winter, Davis drew his pistol and
tired upon them, killing one instantly, j
The bullet struck just above the heart, !
ranged downward and lodged in the heart. I
His death was instantaneous. In a few I
moments the killing was reported, and the i
officers of the law went out and took the ;
body into town. An inquest was held, and I
from the evidence submitted the jury I
brought in a verdict of manslaughter. j
Davis has not yet been arrested.

sumption.
Mr. E. K. Carlisle, a prominent citizen \
and capitalist of Selma, died at Marion j
Monday morning at li o’clock from the ef
fects of a spell of typhoid fever.
Mr. Thomas Ventress, a prominent ami
highly respected citizen of Clayton, was
on Sunday evening stricken with paralysis
and died in about two hours thereafter.
At 4 o’clock Monday afternoon at the
residence of the bride’s father in LaFny-
ette, Mr. John M. Sehuessler and Mbs
Mittie Carlisle were married, Rev. W. R.
Kirk officiating.
It is reported on good authority that |
there is a movement toward organizing a 1
new national bank at Birmingham with a ;
capital stock of $500,000, the organization
to be effected in less than sixty days.

One hundred and forty-six thousand dol
lars of stock in the Pratt Coal and Iron !
Company, belonging to the estate oi the
late F. L. Wadsworth, sold Monday at the j
court house in Birmingham at public out
cry, for cash, under an order of the pro
bate court. Col. Easley, president oi tile
company, bid it in at par for John H. In
man, of New York.
Monday morning a warrant was issued !
from Justice J. B. Fuller’s court against j
Dr. IT. B. Estes, a well-known dentist of |
Montgomery, charging him with rape and
bastardy. The warrant was issued on an j
affidavit from Miss Lottie Hull, who brings
charges and alleges that she is the victim.
The warrant was placed in * he hands ot
officer John Morrill, who promptly exe
cuted it. Dr. Estes was arraigned in court .
nnd through his counsel waived examina
tion. His bond was fixed at $5900 on the
charge of rape and $500 on the charge ot
bastardy. Failing to make bond the pris
oner was taken to jail.

Mrs. G. A. YValthers, wife of one of the
founders of De Funiak Springs, died sud
denly Friday afternoon.
Three railroad lines are centering at
Oakland, and all will probably bo com
pleted during the present winter.
The next project which claims the at
tention of the business men of Orlando is
the establishment of a paper mill.
Haines Cittf, after so long waiting, has
been raised to the dignity of a regular
station of the South Florida railroad, and
a station agent and telegraph operator
have arrived.
The snake-mouthed hen owned by A. E.
Hamilton, of Pensacola, is a _ prominent
one among his many curiosities. In ex
haling the resemblance to the head and
mouth of a suake is singularly striking.
