Ilnltininrc Herald.
It is n fact not generally known that
Hon. Michael Hannon, the Anne Arundel
countv statesman, is a confirmed dreamer.
Mr. Hannon has been greatly subjected
during bis entire life to these nocturnal
visions. . ...
Mr. Bunnon believes in dreams, but he
has never so publicly acknowledged. In
deed, whenever he has been approached
on the subject by over-inquisitive friends
and newspaper reporters, lie has flatly
denied that he is in the habit or dreaming
or that lie puts any faith in dreams. I hose
most intimate with him, however, know
thnt there's a vein of superstition through
his mind that frequently influences Ids
actions. „ . , „
Home da vs ago, while stopping at Bar-
num’s hotel, he related some of his queer
dreams to several friends who were gath
ered in his room discussing the relative
merits of peach jack and metbingalem.
“I have one dream,” said Mr. Hannon,
‘•that always brings me had luck.”
“What is that?” asked one of the gentle
men present.
“It is a vision of a black eat, with a
White tail, with yellow spots on it,” re
plied Mr. Hannon. “Whenever I see that
eat in my sleet) I prepare for bad luck.
It’s the funniest thing. Now that cat lias
haunted me ever since I was a boy. I
never beard anything like it.
“I first remember the dream when I was
about 10 years of age.” be continued. “I
saw the cat one night, and the next day i
cut my finger severely while whittling a
miniature boat out of a piece ofwhite pine.
Of course, I didn’t think anything partic
ular about tile drenin at tlint time. Home
months after I was studying hard fora
prize in hcIiooI. My father said he’d give
me $2 if I won the prize, and a thrashing
if I didn’t. I was between the deep sea
and the devil. Well. I studied like every
thing until one night I saw the cat again.
The next day a hand of gypsies came to
town, and I played truant and followed
the band, and 1 couldn’t catch up with the
lost day to save mv life. 1 missed the prize
mid 1 got a whaling that 1 remembered
for many a day."
"Sometimes," continued Mr. Hannon,
“ the spots on the cat’s tail are blue, and
sometimes green, but generally they are
yellow. The cat never changes. I can see
It now. It has big eyes, and one of them
is about half sliiit. The hair on one part
of its back is kind ’o rusty and sunburned,
and the fur is rubbed offthe joints of the
legs. Usually, one ear points forward and
the other points backward, as though the
animal was trying to hear both ways at
the same time. All the whiskers are
gone from one side of the head.
“The third time I saw the eat was whon
I was about 14 years of age. I was court
ing a girl in Ireland. It was the first girl I
ever stuck up to, and I was gone bad. I
was in love up to ray ears. Well, one
night I had the dream. The next day, the
very next day, mind you, a strange fellow
from town cut me out and she wouldn’t
have any more to do with me. The next
time I saw the ent the spots on the tail
Were blue. This time the dream cost me
|10. I had bet that much on a horse race,
and my horse got left Worse’ll any horse
? ’OU over saw run. The next time, I think
t was, I had the dream I broke through
the ice while skating, and that came near
being the end of Mike Hannon, sure’s you
live.
“While I was a young man I ofton saw
the eat. Once it prophesied the loss of a
horse and at another time of pigs. You re
member the two big lights I made for con
trol of the machine in Anne Arundel and
lest them both ? Well, I saw the eat botli
times.:
“But I have got a lucky dream, too,”
said Mr. Hannon. “It is u mouse-colored
mule with his ears cut off. The mule never
comes without bringing good fortune.
Just before I was elected senator 1 saw the
mule. 1 saw him again while Dr. Wells
was waiting to be made collector of inter
nal revenue, and theu 1 was cook sure he
wouldn't get it, and 1 would have bet on it
for u dead certainty. The mule appeared
to mo three times before I was made coun
ty treasurer, and on one of l huso occasions
its tail was uplifted ami from it was sus
pended a sign on which was written;
'From your friend- Dr. Wells.’ ”
Mr. Bunnon related numerous iustauces
of dreaming that he saw the mule or the
cut, and lie declared that he could not
recollect but one instance where the
prophecy had not been fulfilled.
“It was just after my friend Mr. Dor
man's re-election,” said Mr. Bunnon, “and
the cat appeared In me three times in one
night . I waited anxiously (hr several days,
expecting some misfortune to befall Mr.
Gorman or me, but as nothing occurred I
concluded that the dream was due to a too
liberal mixture of lieer and onions.”
Mr. Hannon said that lie had never
noticed that either the eat or the mule
seemed to lie olive. They never moved
their legs, or tails, or eyes, or gave forth
any signs of admiration. So far as could
be judged, they were dead, but though
dead, they were not deprived of power for
good or evil.

A brill.led bin.-.
This morning a curly brown spaniel was
having lots of fun all to himself In from, of
Wall Lee's laundry. A sparrow hud
aligiited upon the front gable of the
laundry. The sun was shining brightly,
so thatthe gable and the sparrow casta
sharp, well-defined shadow upon the
ground near the middle of Ford street.
The dog “caught on” to the shadow of the
sparrow, and ■ fitting back in the sunshine
he watched eagerly and intently. Occa
sionally the bird would spread its wings,
when the dog would jump at the shadow
and wonder why ho did not catch it.
Then he would sit back, shake his tail and
repeat the operations when tho bird turn
ed around or Hopped his wings on the
perch. After a while the bird flew away,
and as the shadow went skimming along
the ground, the dog went after it at the
toil of his speed, till the shadow was lost
in the greater shadow- of the Seymour
House. The dog went buck to the' gablo
shadow to look for more bird shadows,
and kept a vigilant eye on the spot till the
rolling of the earth had caused the gable
shadow to vanish.
There is a moral in this: When you
think you have got your eye upon some
thing important, be sure it is not a shadow.
