C'aptnin J. M. Smith, of Jonesboro, wns married to Miss Annie Burney, of Rome, on Thursday. The belled buzzard was seen last week by Mr. T. H. McClcskey, near Mars llill, in Cobb county. There ore twelve or fifteen eases of yel low fever in the fifteenth district of Worth county, according to the Dooly Vindica tor. Dr. IT. C. Hornady has been called to the pastorate of the First Baptist church of Conyers for the next year. He has been serving the Baptists of Setioia for several years. Gerhard Sufter, a popular young Ger man. of Savannah, aged 30 years, who was to have been married Wednesday, died suddenly a few hours before the tune ap pointed for the event. Mr. Mathew Phillips, a very old man, who resided in McDuffie county, w a found dead sitting in his chair on Tuesday of last week. Heart disease was the cause of his death. In the United States court at Macon Wednesday Will R. Jackson, late assistant postmaster of Amerieus, was convicted of rifling a registered package and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. Charlie Rogers, fireman on the Western and Atlantic railroad, who is visiting a sick brother at Fayettesville, accidentally shot himself through the left thumb and finger Wednesday morning while handling a pistol belonging to a friend. Passing along the road the other day in Pulaski county. A. W. Fuller heard a ne gro man uttering loud screams. He ap proached the negro, and in ten feet of him, saw a large rattlesnake, which he killed. The negro s will power appeared to be completely under the snake’s control. Mack Harvey, a little negro boy em ployed at Carroll’s brickyard, at Monroe, got his arm caught in the cogs of the brick machine. The machinery was stopped in time to save his life, but not until the arm had been crushed to the shoulder. Medical aid was soon on the spot, and the arm am putated near the shoulder. The store of Leo Myers, in Brunswick, was completely destroyed by fire about 10 o’clock Wednesday night. The building was owned by Mr. C. Steiner and was not in sured, but the stock, which was totally destroyed as well as the building, was cov ered in the Phoenix, of Hartford, for £1000, being, it is said, more than the value of goods on hand. The origin of the fire is unknown. Sheriff Foster, at Thomaston, lias cap tured a desperate negro charged with stealing £40 from a negro in Meriwether county. It is the opinion of Sheriff Foster that the negro is wanted in some other county for some crime. The prisoner gives his name as William Ruoher, alias Henry Williams, alias Jim Davis. He is 28 years old, weighs 170 pounds, 5 feet 11 inches high, mulatto, straight hair. He has a mean, sour fnce, high cheek bones, and carries the index to crime on his cheek. Any inquiry addressed to Sheriff Foster in reference to the prisoner will he promptly answered. .Uiilmma. It is settled now that President Cleve land will not go to Montgomery to attend the Btute fair. The new Methodist church at Troy is rapidly nearing completion. Ween finish ed it will be an ornament to the city. Eufaula subscriptions to the St. Andrews Bay railroad for the first day rose above £45,000. The John McNab bank headed the list with £10,000. The Jewish congregation at Montgomery has re-elected Dr. Heclit as rabbi, and to show their appreciation oi his faithful work and ability as a pastor, increased bis salary by £400 per annum. The gin house containing seven hales of ; cotton, also a press belonging to Rufus Gill, near Selma, burned Tusday last. Loss £1000; no insurance. The cause of the fire , is unknown. News reached Livingston Thursday 1 evening of I lie killing of a negro by Joshua Lewis, near Epos’ Station, on Wednesday. ( The cause assigned was an insult offered by the negro to Mrs. Lewis. Telegrams received in Montgomery j Thursday from Sheffield, announced that the directors had concluded arrangements by which Col. E. W. Cole, of Nashville, and his associates will build three 150 ton iron furnaces. These, with the two al ready under w'ay, will make five furnaces. 1 A boiler exploded at David Calvin’s mill, near Orrville, Monday evening instantly killing the fireman, also a child of Mr. Cal vin, which died a few hours later bee-use of the scalding received. Mr. Calvin is lying at the point of death. His condition is considered hopeless, so fearfully dan gerous are his scald burns. William C. Carroll, bookkeeper for the wholesale house of John Callaghan, in Mo bile, ivas shot and seriously wounded \\ ed- nesday night by Lee Fordney. The shoot ing occurred at the home of Mrs. Barry, mother-in-law of Mr. Fordney. Carrell had no warning of the coining attack and would have been killed hail lie not grabbed the pistol and turned the bullet aside. 1 lie affair is wrapped in mystery, as Carrell re fuses to talk and Fordney has not yet been • arrested. The declaration of incorporation of the West Alabama Short. Line Railroad was filed with the secretary of state Thursday, 'file company that proposes to construct the new road is composed of the following gentlemen: Robert Jemison, J. A. Mont gomery and James E. Webb, Birmingham; j W. C. Jemison, Tuskaloosa; A. C. Howze, Marion; A. H. Benners, A. M. Tuustall, \\ . B. Inge, A. Lawson, C. E. Walker, O. A. Tutwiter and T. R. Roulhac, Greensboro. , The line of this road is to begin at Ak ron, the iunotion of the Alabama cocat Southern railroad and the Cincinnati, Selma and Mobile railroad, and to run in a northerly direction through liule, Green, Tuskaloosa and Fayette counties, termina ting at a point on the Sheffield and Birm ingham in ' ’ayefcte or Walker county as may be deemed best. The new road will also intersect the Georgia Pacific railroad and the Kansas City railroad at points in the southwestern corner of Walker county. Florida. Six years ago there were 600 miles of railroad in Florida. To-day there are about 2000. The bullet which Nat C. W. Campbell, of Ocala, the genetle- man who was reported as being lost, hav ing disappeared mysteriously over a month ago from Ocala, has been found near Dade City. He is said to have a con tract on the Florida Railway and Naviga tion Company's road, and isir good health and spirits. About two weeks n. > J. K. Duke, of! Orlando, noticed a fill;.,.- body of lire or i meteor, and watched its course until with- 1 in three or four feet of tlie earth, on aj line and within a very short distance from J his yard. Saturday morning while Mrs. 1 Duke was in the garden sl\e espied and picked up a stone or piece of metallic lava weighing half a pound, which may be seen at Mr. Duke’s store.
