Catskill, October 18.--The brazen at
tempt. of certain miserable Connecticut
persons to stool the sea serpent from our
midst and transfer him to Long Island
Hound, in the demoralizing vicinity of
Norwalk, has excited deep indignation
among the citizens of Green and Ulster
counties, and a suit for replevin may yet
be carried to the supreme court. The
only authentic sen serpent was discovered
off Kingston last July, nml was subse
quently domesticated by a disinterested
committee of hotel keepers who reported
its movements to various excited news
papers with great promptness and care.
When first seen it was 700 feet
long, with black and yellow stripes
running longitudinally on the back,
had a coffin-shaped head, pink eyes,
and nine rows of teeth, and was leisurely
propelling itself against the tide at the rate
of twenty-one miles nil hour, leaving a
Wake behind lilt* that of a large steamer.
The discoverer was a reputable citizen wh j
had indulged in no stimulants for some
weeks, be? g under medical treatment for
softening of the brain. Two days later, as
a party of Kingston gentlemen of unim
peachable veracity were returning from a
stag dinner at Poughkeepsie, they saw the
sea serpent again. It had grown consider
ably, being now 1150 feet long, had green
and black stripes running around the
body, a barrel shaped head and two tails,
and’was evidently in bouncing health and
genial spirits, for it raced with the ferry
boat, and on drawing ahead winked seven
times in rapid succession, lifted its double
tail high in tli*air, plunged its head far
beneutli the surface and emitted u mourn
ful sound like the splitting of a mainsail,
which could have been itenrd for two
miles.
Business being lively at the hotels for
two weeks after this, the serpent concealed
himself, and next showed up oil' Catskill
Point, where he was seen by Charlie Silen
cer, Captain George Palmer and Major
Barker nt 2 a. in., and nt -1:U7 the following
afternoon by Major Iiank Selleck and
Judge Henry Funday, of Bombay's Ifook,
who were out skittering for herring. None
of these gentlemen have touched a drop
since. The lowest esliiiinte now placed
tho sea serpent’s length at 27<i<> feet, while
his appearance 1ms been greatly improved
by painting his back orange, his sides red
and his belly a pule blue, llis nineteen
rows of teeth wore ply visible on both
occasions, and Captain John Pinder dis
tinctly saw throe tails churning the
water behind, and propelling him at the
rate of 36 miles nil hour until he disap
peared in tlie direction of Saugerties.
These facts are too well known to need
more than a bare reference; nnd that the
bald attempts at denial and ridicule have
S roved futile is shown by the enormous
ecroase in tne sale of the Albany staple
during the past six weeks, public favor
having turned almost completely to Bour
bon and Monongahela,
The true sea serpent belongs to the
family Jimjamidie mid is essentially of a
spectacular nature. The smallest and most
deadly species known is the Horrors absin-
thius, found generally off tho coast of
Franco and in Mediterranean waters. Next
in venomous power and of considerable
size Is tho well known Newarkius redcli,
which abounds off the Jersey coast at nil
Reasons of tho year, and is amphibious,
often being found by hard-working gen
tlemen In their leather apparel. The
largest mid most important species is tiic
celebrated Gottamagin hoiipla, of which,
unless Professor Wiggins and other relia
ble obsorvors arc sadly wrong, the Kings
ton soft serpent is undoubtedly a specimen.
Mias boon most frequently seen in the
-•Mississippi nnd Ohio and in Green river,
Kentucky, in the latter locality being of
especially lurid and wonderful colors.
Colonel Henry Watterson once—but this
is irrelevant.
The bite of a sea-serpent is not necessa
rily deadly, if dozes of bromide are fre
quently given and tho patient is well pro
tected against cold by a long garment
without sleeves until the paroxysms pass,
when usually no symptom remains but a
distressing feeling of enlargement about,
the temples, and a desire for effervescent
water with a bit of timber in it. When,
however, the serpent is complicated with
an acute attack of pink monkeys and
green mice the situation is grave, mid total
abstinence .should be prescribed at once.
The Catskill sea serpent is undoubtedly
identical with that of Kingston, for an in
vestigation by local scientists has proved
that both towns used tho same brand of
Albany Eye, and although not protected
by copyright is clearly the property of the
summer hotel owners in this neighbor
hood. Much of the prosperity of tlie sea
son now closing can justly be attributed to
tho fostering cure the companionable
monster received from them, and their re
sentment of any ophiologienl plagiarism
by Norwalk is as just as it will be spirited
and conclusive. H. G. C.

WOMEN AND MONEY.

Contemporary Review.
Every girl who is not entirely depend
ent on her male relations- a position
which, considering all the ups ana downs
of life, the sooner she gets out of the bet
ter --ought by the time she is old enough
to possess any money to know exactly how
much she has, where it is invested and
what it ought yearly to bring in. By this
time also sue should have acquired some
knowledge 6f business—bank business, re
ferring to cheeks, dividends aud so on—and
as much of ordinary business ns she can.
To her information of a practical kind
never conies amiss, especially the three
golden rules, which have very rare excep
tions: No investment o'.' over live per
cent, is really sate; trust no one with your
money without security, which ought to be
as strict between the nearest mid dearest
friends as between strangers, and, lastly,
"keep all your affairs from day to day in as
accurate order ns if you had to die to-mor
row. The mention of dying sug
gests another necessity—as soc n
as you are 21 years of age
make your will. You will not die a day
the sooner; you can niter it whenever you
like, while the ease of mind it will be to
you and the trouble it may save to those
that come after you are beyond telling.
It cannot be too strongly impressed upon
every girl who has or expects that not
undesirable tiling, "a little income of her
own.” whata fortunate responsibility tins
is and how useful she may make it to others.
Happier than the lot of many married
women is that of the “unappropriated
blessing,” ns I have heard an old maid
called, who lias her money, less or more,
in her own hands, and can use it as she
chooses, generously as wisely, without
asking anybod’s leave and being aceouut-
able for it to uo oue. But then she must
have learned from her youth upward how
to use it; she must not spare any amount
of trouble in the using of it ana she must
console herself for many a lonely regret—
we are but human, all of us—with the
thought that she lias been trusted to bo a
steward of the Great Master. Such an old
maid often does as much good in her
generation as twenty married women.
