DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN :8 'COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, TUESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 26, 1886,
A NEW PRECIOUS STONE.
The lliil<tnill« and Where 11 Comes From—Kmor-
olds from North Caroline.
A new precious stone tins lately been
brought to the notice of dwellers and the
public iu discoveries made by Mr. William
Earl lliddin in Alexander county, North
Carolina. The stone resembles in many
respects the emerald, bein« of nearly the
same color, but is denser and more bril
liant. It was named the hiddenite by the
late Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, of Louisville,
Kentucky, who was first to recognize its
true chemical nature. The new stone is
found in close connection with the emerald
but docs not, like tile latter, belong to the
beryl family. The story of its discovery,
as told by Mr. Hidden is Interest
ing. While carrying on a search for
platinum through the southern states, un
der the patronage of Thomas A. Edison,
he came across, in Alexander county. 9
few pieces of bronze, which in their edges
showed a tinge of color which verged dis
tinctly on that of the emerald. Being an
expert mineralogist he came to the con
clusion that n region which could produce
bronze having a slight tint of tlie true cm
erald color ought to furnish the pure em
erald itself. A vein was subsequently
found at a depth of eight feet below the
surface, in which he not only found the
true emerald, but with it many slender
crystals having emerald color, but
differing from thnt gem in nearly
every other respect. It was to these slen
der crystals that the name hiddenite was
applied. It is to-day the rarest among the
precious stones, and hns not yet been dis
covered in any other place. The largest
one found thus far was three inches long,
weighed one-half ounce, and was cut up
into gems valued at more than $1000. Be
sides the hiddenite and the emerald these
mines produce numerous specimens of
aquamarines, yellow spodnmene, citrine
and smoky topaz, routine garnets and pe
culiarly beautiful quattz crystal.
From the same mine next to the largest
emerald in the world was (married. The
largest is own ‘d by the Duke of Devon
shire, and weighs ' but two pennyweights
more than the one in question, which is
hexagonal in form, is three inches long,
one and three-quarter thick from face to
face, and weighs eight and three-quarter
ounces. Its value in the present uncut
state is about $151X1.
A TOUGH CUSTOMER.
Crazy Mail ami as Slrnng ns Samson.
Indianapolis, October 22.—The ran-
Haudle express train from Chicago, arriv
ing early this morning, had one passenger
whom the employes would gladly have un
loaded could they have done so. lie was
a colored man of strong physique and
crazy as a loon on religion, and what
made him crazier was the fact that he had
gone to Wabash after money that lie had
located in a vision, and he had failed to
find it. The coach in which he took his
seat hud a compartment for the benefit of
smokers, and in this he remained
quiet until the conductor made
a demand upon him for his
faro. Then he bounded to his feet, and,
with a knife and cane, he took entire pos
sesion of that part of the car, which he re
tained until the train reached this city.
At Noblesvillo the sheriff of Hamilton
county was called to arrest him and he
found it nn impossible task, but he man
aged to confine the lunatic in that part the
car where he was first found, and after the
arrival of the train in this city he engaged
his attention by threats and movements
until the police could slip behind and
•grasp his arms. Then followed a lively tua-
slo, and whilo the man struggled with
the desperation of a maniac, he kept pray
ing all the time that God would give him
strength to retain his knife, that lie might
uso it upon his assailants. The clothing
upon one of the olfleers wus cut in
the struggle, but no one was injured,
and he was finally unloaded at the police
station and lodged in a cell. His name is
Moses O’Runnon, and he belongs in this
city. When his presence was discovered
on the train there was the liveliest alarm
among the passengers, as there was con
stant danger that ho would break out of
the compartment and run amuck down
the aisles, and the train men were materi
ally relieved when he was well off their
hands.

I had heard much of the famous medical
lake, sixteeu miles west of here, and so
drove out to see it among clouds of dust,
f usts of wind and broiling sun alternately.
'he trip out and back was pleasant, how
ever, a constant change of scenery aiul
succession of surprises.
We found there were three lakes, instead
of one, all of the same water, said to con
tain “life’s elixir," ft cure-all for all human
ailments. No doubt there are valuable
properties in the water as attested by the
analysis and the numerous testimony of
those relieved by its use.
We wore prepared for a bath, but time
and inclination both forbid; time, because
of the inclination first to eat; inclination
from the presence of certain dead reptiles
in the water to be seen, a thing, tno at
tendant saicL“never before known.”
I said, reptiles there wore at the bottom
of the lake which seemed half lizard, half
fish, with the fins of a fish, the arms of a
lizard, the body of neither,-with the fins
of the tail horizontal, instead of perpen
dicular as with a fish, a sort of mongrel as
like a salamander. In fact these must
have had peculiar tenacity of life to hav.
liveil in these waters at all, charged with
salts as like lye, out of which near by they
were making soap. The tiny waves of the
lake had lashed the water into a foam pre
cisely in appearance as like a heavy soap
suds, the frothy suds piling up in some
places a foot deep or more.
Free Trade*
The reduction of internal revenue and
tho taking off of revenne stamps from Pro
prietary Medicines, no doubt bus largely
benefited the consumers,as well as relieving
the; burden of homo manufacturers. Es
pecially is this the case with Green’s Au
gust Flower and Boschce’s German Syrup,
as tlie reduction of thirty-six cents per
dozen, has been added to increase the size
of tiie bottles containing those remedies,
thereby giving one-fifth more medicine iu
the 75 cents size. The August Flower for
Dyspepsia and Liver Comnlaint, and the
German Syrup for Cough and Lung trou
bles, have perhaps, the largest sale of any
medicines 111 the world. The advantage of
increased size of the bottles will be greatly
appreciated by the sick and a-IHicted, iii
every town and village in civilized coun
tries. Sample bottles for 10 cents remain
the same size. octl2 d&wly
