DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN; COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 6 1886. POWDERLY'S SPEECH. "What He N*M the Night Before George'. Defeat. *P3(inaCordial CENTRAL RAILRQADi The night before the election in New Vork Mr. Powderly uddressed a large meeting in that city. Ah hiH speech is a matter of great interest it is given below as Reported in the New York World. Mr. Chairman and Fellow-Citizens of Now York—Your chairman told you a moment ago that I was here merely to rc- ftite the slanders of the press of New York. He might have added, to refute the slander of those who are in no way connected with tile press of New York. I am here also for another purpose than that of re futation of any charge or any statement made either by the pre.uj or by word of tuouth; I am hero to advise every man who can wield Unit weapon—the ballot- to-morrow to do so for an honest man, for an honest cause and for ail the people of this broad land of ours. [Applause.] I am here to ask of you vvnen you go from here to-night to go not by yourselves alone. I am here to nsk you to go to your neigh bor’s house, and to go among your friends Who can also vote, and to say to them that It is only the number of votes that will count. No amount of cnthuiiism, no amount of good wishes will elect a man. What we ask of you is the number of votes larger thun the other party can poll. [Cries of “You will have them.”] You ure here not alone for New York, but for all the nation, whose eyes are upon you and Who are waiting to see whether you can redeem this city from the slurs cast upon it. We ask of you, men of New York, to throw off these insults that have been cast Upon you and to give to New York as may or a man who will ably administer the affairs of your city—[cries of “We will!”— as it has never been done before. [Cries of “Never fear, we’ll do it.”) “I found upon entering the city that my name had been coupled With others and certain charges had been made against me. Now let me say this right here: I And it stated that Mr. George is opposed to Chi nese labor, that lie has cast slurs upon Parnell and on the land league. Well, if he were running for the riiayoralty of the city of Dubli i this might be pertinent. I find also that it is charged that lam a free trader and that the workingmen oi New York are not free traders. Well, Terrence V. Powderly is a free trader from the top of his head to the bottom of his foot, and I did and do say that, but the question of free trade or tariff has nothing to do with the canvass. There ure things upon which Henry Ueorge and I do agree. [Applause.] We agree that poverty should be abolished. [Applause.] We believe that those things that God gave us should be enjoyed. We bei.eve that all men Should have these things, aud if we are wrong in asking these things that God said We should have, blame God and not us. [Applause.] You may say that it is not the language of a Christian, but I say that thoBe things that God ordained that men ahopl^ have they should ba/e. I did and do Bay that and i will stand to that until I drop in my tracks. [Applause.] You have nominated Henry George—[ap plause]—you have placed him before the World; you have asked him to leave his home, to come from that retirement he loves, and you ure in duty hound to sup port him to-morrow. [Cries of "wo will; wo will. Never fear.”] “You have voted with the parties that have held sway in this city for years, and every time you have elected a man ho has told you that he was the workingman’s candidate, no matter what party he be longed to, but we are now taking the mat ter into our own hands aud have nomi nated a candidate of our own. We knew that Henry George—[appiause]—is the friend of iubor. [Renewedapplause ] He has placed prominently be! ire the world certain principles, and for them he has beau stigmatized as a comm mist, u social ist, an anarchist, and every o.bsr “ist”that you can call to mind. I am used to hard names and don’t mind them. I was once nominated for mayor of S ranton. J. am sorry New York is so far from Scranton, but yon have see:: fit to nominate Henry George—[applause]—for t he next best city; but when I was nominated they said exact ly of me what they say of hi m. They said that property would not be safe if f was elected; that it would doer; iso in value .and that every house owner vould be glad to sell out iud go a ,vay. Wi 11, I was may -or for two years, and the people were glad to eloot the ‘murderer’ and 1 . dinin' for the second time— [applause]— an 1 on the third canvass they gave illo a majority such as was never given before; and ;o I say if men who believe in doing right ! hereby consti tute themselves communists .and anarch ists; if, instead of the rolling mills moving away more of them are established, and that is communism and socialism, in the name of G >d lot us ho communists. [Ap plause.] If I lived in this city I would give Mr. George—well, one vote. I had nearly said a dozen, but that I could not do. l say to you vote early to morrow morning, for yourselves, far your families, for your God, in the person of Henry Goorgo. [Applause.] If matters not whether he would make a better mayor ot New York than any honest man ; that is not the question, but you have put him forward, and it behooves you to do your duty on the morrow, so that the longing eyes that are looking to New York shall see that this man is supported until he shall tuke his place in the waite house at Washington. [Long and continued ap plause.J I stand here as the r presentative of every mini who amlles a tool, and on the morrow, whether in the Knights of Labor or in other organizations, on behalf of thoBS people I ask you to do your duty, and say to the people of this land that there are other things than strikes, other things than boyoots, and that among them is the proper regulation of the land system such as will guarantee to every man the full en joyment of his right and no more, so that when labor shall raise her voice again she Bhall be heeded.” Some people sutler from sick headache all their lives, dragging out a miserable ■existence. If they would onlv try one aosc of SMITH’S BILE BEANS (one Bean) they would never say that nothing would afford them relief. This wonderful remedy is pleasant harmless and always effective. The price, 25 cents per bottle, makes it very popular. For sile by all druggists and dealers ill medicines, or sent by mail. novl eod&wlm Looking for a Location.
