Coogler, one of Bremen’s mer chants, died Saturday night at 8 o’clock, after a painful illness of several weeks, John D. Coxwell, a Wilkes county farm er, makes enough money on his potato crop to run his farm. His cotton is sur plus. He is mak ntr money. A colored woman, Carrie Gaines, living in East Savannah, has gone crazy. The calamity was caused by the earthquake and religion. She has attempted suicide several times. Judge Adams rendered his decision in the case of Ferguson & Co. vs. the Savan nah, Dublin and Western road Mondav. He refused an injunction and Bet aside the temporary receiver. Pleas Shaw, colored, was caught last Wednesday on the fair grounds in Athens in the act of selling liquor. Monday he was brought betore the mayor. He plead ed guilty and wes fined f 100. Mr. George G. Truitt, of Troupe county, the champion cotton grower of Georgia, has completed the picking, ginning and baling of his cotton crop from seventy- five ucres. He says that the aggregate re sult is fifty-two bales, averaging 180 pounds each. This on a two-mule farm. The students of the technological de partment of Emory Colege are construct ing plans and patterns for an engine, which will be built by them and placed on exhibition in Chicago. This department has forty students, and they are doing some skillful work. Mr. N. S. Lipscomb, a thrifty farmer who lives two miles from Douglassville, had the missfortuue of getting his cotton house, containing some 3000 pounds of seed cotton, together with his farmiug tools and implements, burned on last Wednesday night. The origin of the fire is unknown. The municipal contest in Athens is get ting rather lively. There are two candi dates in the field for mayor, and each ward has two or more candidates for alder man. The two candidates for mayor are Messrs Asbury Hodgson and W. L. Wood, both prominent merchants of the place. A telegram received at Brunswick an nounces that the Clyde line will put on two steamers a week from Tuesday next to run between that port and New York in opposition to the Mallory line. This is a move which lias been long sought for by a number of prominent merchants, and bids fair to result in great good to Brunswick. The steamships Yemussee and Delaware will be those used at present. The stockholders of the Dublin and Wrightsville railroad met. in Dublin Mon day to endorse t e action oi the directors of the road in consolidating it with the Wrightsville and TenniJle railroad com pany, and the directors of the last named road will meet in Wrightsville on the 17th to sanction the action of their directors in the same matter. Mr. John B. Burrow and his little son went out ’possum hunting Wednesday night, and after they had been oul a short while the cries of the boy attracted the at tention of Mr. Nolan Wright, who went to the boy and found«Mr. Burrow pinned to the ground by a tree, dead, which ho had felled in an attempt to catch a ’possum. Mr. Burrow was a hard working farmer, and leaves a wife and several small chil dren, who are quite dependent. He lived only a lew miles from Waco. Mr. T. E. Legg, a young farmer near Smyrna, four years ago cultivated land that would not make six bushels of corn to the nrce. He has manured and brought it up until it now makes him thirty bushels to the acre. Land that four years ago that lie could not get a stand of wheat oh, he now makes on it nearly a bale of ootlou to the acre. He keeps his hogs and cows tip and it is generally conceded that they are ail in good order and do well. A lilts inn. Captain Win. B. Hughes, an old Mexican soldier of Mobile, died on Monday. Lee Graves, a negro brakeman on the Louisville and Nashville, fi. il between two cars at Birmingham on Sunday and lost an arm. Mr. Thomas Clanton shot at a negro named O’Benjamin in Montgomery on Monday for stepping on his foot, but failed to hit him. A gin house containing four bales of cotton and 100 bushels of seed, owned by Jerry Johnson, near Selma, burned Mon day evening. The loss is about $1,000. Mr. Harvey Clark, of Union Springs, was married to Miss Minnie McDowell, of Cross Keys, Ala., Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. Itev. Dr. Chambliss performing the ceremony. An old man, a jeweler named Holt, dropped dead at his shop in Greenville at 6;S0 o’clock yesterday morning. Death is supposed to have been caused from a com plication of diseases. Rev. A. M. Cristie, late of the First Presbyterian church in Richmond, Va., has been elected to the pastorship of the Jackson Street Presbyterian church in Mobile, in place of Rev. Wm. Flinn, D. D., who has resigned. Joe Clarke, aged about sixteen, ,son of S. H. Clarke, section master at Georgians, was instantly killed about 8 o’clock Sun day night by falling between two freight cars. He had boarded tne freight train, and was passing from car to car while the train was taking the side track for a pass- iug train To meet the requirements of the lnw by which the trustees got the property, the “ Alabama State Land Company” is to be organized, and the unsold Alabama and Chattanooga railroad lands, hold by Swann and Billups, as trustees, are to be made over to it. A declaration has already been filed in the probate ofilee at Birmingham putting down the capital stock at $377,000. Tjie property comprises some 000,000 acres. It will soon be on the market again, hav ing been necessarily taken oil last May when the tru3t expired. Florida. Watermelons were on the market at Bronson last week. The Baptist state convention convenes at Gainesville this week. DeLnnd will soon have telegraphic com munication with the outside world. Rev. N. A. Bailey, of Mioanopy, has been elected pastor of the Orlando Baptist church. , „ . , Palatka boasts of the only first-class skating rink for the use of colored people In the state of Florida. The tax roll in Levy county was $1,289,- 430 in 1835 and $1,349,021 for the present year, an increase of $79,591. A ton of palmetto is to he sent north from Sanford to be manufactured into pa per, as a test of that material for printing paper. Jack Frost swooped down upon Clay county on Monday and Tuesday nights. Bananas and other tender vegetation look scorched. Mr. William Maycumber, who arrived at Green Cove Spring from New York during the week, intends starting a poul- try yard of the best fancy breeds, having brought with him some 300 head of chick ens. ■Thursday the Florida Southern railway fouudry made the largest output ever made in Palatka in one day, the total weight of the castings being 8400 pounds. Engineer Colwell took a train of cars over the r lorida Southern a few days siuee troni Pnlatka to Rochelle, a distance of torty miles, in forty-five minutes, making five stops on the route, equal to a mile a minute straight running. For the past few weeks a party of engi neers have been at work running the pre liminary lines for the Jacksonville, Man atee and Gulf railroad. Lines have been run to a point on the Manatee river from Plant City, Lakeland and Bartow, and it is said that one of the three lines, the one offering the greatest inducements, would get the road.
