DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 17, 1886. A STRANGE DISAPPEARANCE. TlK' TreMirT of Oulre.ton County Loim HI, Him! Over n i'ollttciil Itefeat. Galveston, November 13.—Among the four candidates for the county treusurer- ,l,jp at the recent election was Mr. W. J. Burke, the iucumbeut of the office as well ns the proprietor of the Labor Advocate and Sunday Opera Glass, the latter a society journal. In su pport of his claims for u third term Mr. Burke urged his record as a county official, against which naught could be said, even by his worst.euemies. The influences of his papers were also used to sustain him, and Burke counted himself a sure winner. He applied himself so un tiringly to his labors for re-eloction that stimulants were freely resorted to to sus tain his exhausted mental and physical ' This was the condition of affairs when the results of the election were announced, showing that Mr. Burke was defeated. The knowledge that his friends had thrown him over proved greater than his crushed spirit could bear, and so on last Saturday evening he disappeared from Galveston as mysteriously as if the earth had swallowed him up. The only direct information of the exact time of his departure, that is if he left the island alive, came through a hurriedly written note to his wife, stating that he was going to Austin to make final settle ment with the comptroller, preparatory to turning over the office to his" successor. The union ticket agent remembers to have sold him a ticket to Houston on either Saturday or Sunday. The watchman de clares he saw him get on the train on Sat urday, but County Collector Weekes, who was on that particular train, is positive that Burke was not among the passengers. Nothing special was thought of Mr. Burke’s absence except his wife, who be came alarmed, as the days rolled by, with out bringing word of him. This morning she happened to look into Mr. Burke’s tin box, in which he keeps his private papers, and discovered the following letters, ad dressed to herself, her daughter, Mr. Dud Bryan, city editor of the News, and county clerk P. S. Wren. None of the letters bear any date: Dear Dud—A fatality seems to hang over the treasurer’s office. Since the death of Rinker, every treasurer has become ruin ed. I trust that my successor may be more fortunate. My aceounts and warrants are at the Island City Savings Bank. W. J. Burke. Dear Wren—Look after my insurance, and do what you can for my wife. God bless you. W. J. Burke. Mamma—My heart is broken. Death is my only hope. You will And what money I have in the little tin box. God bless you. Papa. Daughter—Good-bye. Be good to mam ma and pray for Papa. While the tenor of the letters would in dicate suicide, Mr. Burke’s friends believe such is not the case. The general impres sion is that he has gone away to be alone and recover from the constant reminders of his unsuccessful run for office. His ac counts as county treasurer are being inves tigated and are correct to the fraction of a cent thus far. Mr. Burke is aged 32 years, and is a native of Maryland . The Einker mentioned in Mr. Burke’s letter was a former nounty treasurer who was found in his private office with a bullet holo in his head and a pistol by his side. Advice to Mothers.—Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup should always be used when children are cutting teeth. It re lieves the little sufferer at onee; it produces natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes as “bright as a button.” It is very pleasant to taste. It soothes the child, softens the gums, allays all pain, relieves wind, regu lates the bowels and is the best known remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising from teething or other causes. Twenty- ff”e cents a bottle. jel7 d&wly Filled to Revive Her. An exchange speaks of the “mysterious death” of a young woman whose body was found near the roadside. There seems to be nothing mysterious about it, for two empty whisky bottles were found by her side.—Albany Argus. flood Results in Every ( use. D. A. Bradford, wholesale paper dealer of Chattanooga, Tenn., writes that he was seriously afflicted with a severe cold that settled on his lungs; had tried many rem edies without benefit. An amusing incident at the polling- place was the request of a small boy that, on account of the inability of his father to come to the polls, he might vote for him. —Newton Journal. Ulcerated Log. About August 1st 1866, an eruption ap peared on my arms and legs, which pained me very much and seemed to affect my physical condition generally. Under the treatment of a physician the sores disap peared except on my left leg. There it seemed to concentrate, and two-thirds of the limb from the knee to the ankle soon became a solid running sore that dis charged bloody matter continually. I was treated by many physicians at various times, but obtained no permanent relief. On the advice of a physician at this place, I finally commenced using Swift’s Specific. I am glad to say that after using three large bottles the so es have all healed ex cept one, and that is where the stirrup leather rubs when I am riding, and will soon be gone. G. N. Frizzell. SINGULAR LIBEL SUIT 6 liich Illustrates the Danger of Signing Papers Without Knowing Their Contents. Sew York, November 15.—A libel suit decidedly novel character was brought the United States circuit court, Brook- 1, to-day. Henrietta Woods, a dress- iker, was the plaintiff, and the benevo- it Erastus Wilman the defendant. The r plaintiff alleges that her reputation is maged to the extent of $10,000 and de- tnds judgment for that amount. The it comes about in a peculiar way. Some ae ago, it will lie remembered, Erastus ilman Assumed a leading part in ^ _ agitation to abolish the law for 2 imprisonment for debt in New York, e or the nrisoners in whom Mr. Wiman ik a peculiar interest was one Terrence mett. He has been imprisoned for Ihteen months upon a judgment of $6000 covered against him bv Henrietta Woods 1 breach of promise of marriage. In the imorial presented to the governor re- esting the abolition of the iinprison- mt-for-debt law, especial mention was : du of the peculiar hardships of Monett’s !• It was stated that the plaintiff “had iroper relations with other men, and l. _ - . puroha ' derjud| -UU neglec ’b acoount. t the opening of court to-day counsel Mr. Wiman moved that the complaint dismissed upon the ground that the norial presented to the governor was a privileged communication, and that the aw especlaily exempts such communica tions from a libellous character. The mo- lion was denied and Mr. Wiman took the witness stand. He testified that ho never • aw the plaintiff) that he had not drawn the memorial, but that Mr. A. K. McDon ald had done so. This statement he made to show that no libel was intended. He did not even read tbe particular clause in stated in conclusion tbnt he had no intention whatever of libc - ling he plaintiff. Counsel then took the stand and corob. ubu- " ■ man's evidence in every partic- Auothor motion was then made to dis miss the complaint on the ground that only four copies of the memorial had been presented, and that there had been no cir- eulatlon of the same as the law of libel re quired. This motion, too, was defined bv Judge Wheeler, who thought it best that the ease should go to the jurv. The case was first brought up in the supreme court in June last, but was changed to the United States circuit court on the ground that Mr. Wiman was a British subject and not sub ject to the jurisdiction of the state courts. Caldwell, of Dallas, to-day exhibited an interesting relic of the war in a check for ¥80,000, drawn on the confederate states depository at Columbus by W. M. Gil lespie, quarter-master, in favor of Col. T. Sanford. It is dated April 14, 1865, five days after the surrender of Lee. The cheek was delivered to Col. Caldwell, who was the chief clerk of the depository, during the movement from Alabama to Georgia before the victorious federal cav alry. The letter was delivered in the woods and before the news of Lee’s sur render had reached the retreating con federates. This is probably the last check on the confederate states depository.
