Berry Freeman, a colored farmer of
Burke county, has been caught in the net
of “sanding his cotton.”
A thief stole the clock from the new
Baptist church in Macon, Another one
stole a watch from Burke’s jewelry store.
Mr. Wittderweedle, of Milford, carried
about260 pounds channel catfish to Albany
last Monday, the result of one night’scataii
on his trip in the Notehaway.
Mr. W. A. Jordan, one of the most high
ly esteemed citizens of Reynolds, will
leave with liis family for Brunswick,which
they will make their future home.
The hotel at the Roswell depot has been
entirely destroyed by tire. It wasoecupied
by two families, Messrs. Beavers and Cole
man. In it Professor R. N. Aiken had all
of his dining room and kitchen furniture
stored.
Cnpt. Tom Glover, of Stapleton, recently
chased a fox from his hen roost so closely
that the fox was forced to take a tree,
when Captain Tom dispatched him with a
pistol ball.
Mr. Lawson Kelley, who lives on tho
Sapp place, was on his way to Waynesboro
with five bales of cotton on his wagon, and
when near Alexander the cotton was dis
covered to be on fire and was destroyed.
The fire originated from smoking.
Charles Blackman, who was to have
been hanged atEllaville on Friday, for the
murder of Stonewall Tondee, has gained a
respite pending an appeal to the supreme
court. The trial of Blackman for the of
fense took place before Judge Fort on the
first of October last.
While Presiding Elder Lloyd and family
wore in at supper Thursday night in Way-
cross the parsonage caught on fire, and
the flames were spreading rapidly when
discovered. Mrs. Lloyd, with remarkable
coolness, went and got her baby from the
roonmand returned with a bucket of water,
with which she extinguished the flames,

Colonel Samuel C. Dunlop has sold a lot to
Messrs. D. E. Evans and .1. W. Hudson for

Main street and runs back 165 feet to Line

brick store rooms on the lot at once.
Fred. C. Von Kamp, a young man from
Augusta, was arrested Tuesday iu Savan
nah and jailed on the complaint of his
mother on a. charge of larceny after trust
de’egated. Mrs. Von Kamp lives in Au
gusta, and recently sold some property
there to Charles Pliinisy, deputising her
son to perfect the sale, and collect the pro
ceeds. He did so, and on getting "the
money immediately started for Savannah.
On arriving there he bought a bar room in
the eastern part of the city, and run it for
a couple of weeks when, on his failure to
pay rent, the stock was levied oil and he
sold out.
A child wa« recently scalded to death in
Clay county from pouring a pot of coffee
on himself.
The annual meeting of the bar associa
tion takes place in Montgomery the first
week in December.
The ladies of Montgomery will hold a
bazar during the first week in December
for completing the monument.
One hundred and eight new post offices
have been established in Alabama during
the new administration.
A ten-year old boy in Henry county
found and drank a quart of whisky. He
died next day from the effects of it.
A petition is in circulation in Mobile in
opposition to the proposed bill prohibiting
the running of freight trains on Sundays.
Mr. John Laslie, an esteemed citizen of
Bullock county, died Monday of Bright’s
disease. .He was a brother of Major
Carnie Laslie, of Macon county.
A movement is on foot to supply Mobile
with what it very badly needs—a suitable
dry dock. A bill of charter is being drawn
up and a stock company will be organized
under the general laws ot the state.
East Selma is infested with eighteen
tramps. They sleep iu tne woods at night
and beg in the daytime. They are regular
thievesand a uuisauee to the residence
part of the city.
The sale of the Sloss furnace property
for 52,000,000 to the Sloss Steel and Iron
Company, the name to be taken by the
new, was confirmed at a meeting Tuesday
of the stockholders of tho old company.
The new company will elect office™ and
choose managers iu thirty days.
D. F. Myres, of Birmingham, has brought
suit again at the Western Union telegraph
company for $500 for holding a telegram
thirty-three hours before delivering it to
him. He is a lawyer, and alleges that, on
account of the defendant’s negligence, the
party who meant to employ him on im
portant business had to make a different
arrangement.
On Sunday last new Elam church, on
the Jit. Meigs road, seven miles from
Montgomery, was destroyed by fire. The
upper story of the church was occupied
by the Woodside grange. Some grass was
being burned in a field near by, and the
fire broke out, reaching the church and it
was destroyed.

the wrong method to vindicate his charac
ter in bringing a big libel suit. He should
nave been content to say to his adversary
as good old Horace Greeley once said:

One vessel is reported to have taken ^1500

Blue fish, pompane and Spanish mack
erel are imported in limited quantities at
Cedar Key. They go immediately to New
York, where they find an appreciative
market.
The sheriff of a county not a hundred
miles from Volusia took a prisoner out of
jail who is on trial for murder, had a jolly
? ;ood time with him at a hotelj and at a
riendly game of cards the prisoner won
all the sheriff’s money.
Palatka News : Rev. J. L. Thomas has
just sold a small grove at Peniel, of 100
trees just coming into bearing, to Mrs. lb.
H. Hayden, of Augusta, Ga., for $3000. T.ie
grove is splendidly located, and the
purchaser secured a bargain in getting
possesion of it.
At DeLeon Springs Frank Jones was
loading some brass shells last Tuesday,
when he met with a very serious accident.
He loaded the shells and then put the
primers on them, during which operation
one of them exploded. The shell burst
into a thousand pieces, cutting his left
hand very badly, while one of the pieces
imbedded itself in his left breast imme
diately over the heart. ^
