* DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 25, 1886. CHURCH. Ifti-pton DrtIi' nil Touching cent. PairView. Ky., November 21.—A hand some frame Methodist church crowning the hill on the right tells Unit wo have reached the western limit, of Pairvicw, a village of some 2. r >0 inhabitants, on the line of Todd and Christian counties, situated on the old state road, once a groat thor oughfare for staging in the days of Troy coach travel bet ween Klkton and Hopkins ville. The village is the scene of unusual stir and commotion to-day, unused hy the dedication of the new bethel Baptist church, on the site of the old weather beaten log cabin where Jefferson Davis was born 7>i years since, just eight months before the birth of another Kentuckian, Abraham Lincoln, his renowned adversary in the greatest civil war which the world has ever boi n. The cabin was pulled down soon afh r its cession to Bethul church and rebuilt a short distance from its old sit'.', which is now occupied by the handsomest and best appointed church of its size in Kentucky. The cabin lot, containing nine acres, was bought soon time since by Air. AI. If. Clark, a leading tobacco broker of Clarkevillo, Tenn., and several other gentlemen and deeded to Air. Davis, who thereupon deeded the old homestead to Bethel church. The early date of its settlement is shown by the size of an old seedling pear tree, which stood till recently in the yard, hav ing a girth about its trunk of seven feet nine inches, and wearing the honors of at least seventy years. The youthful Jeffer son Davis hail plainly greater reverence for the paternal pear tree than George Washington had for his father’s English cherry tree. After the close ol nn anthem by the choir, Mr. Davis was invited to the stand by the pastor. Mr. Davis, bent with age and apparently in feeble health, was sup ported to the platform and said in .sub stance that his heart was full of emotion and of thankfulness Unit this church has remembered the home of his nativity by erecting on it this beautiful temple to the Triune God. In reply to the question which had been asked him, vis: “Why lie was not a Baptist.” he Would say that his father, a much better man thnu himself, was a Baptist. Hu had left this place in infancy, ana had revisited it once before, but .on both visits he could say, witli deep emotion: “This is ray own, my native land.” He saw around him IImein, of Ulorj. It spoke well for this community, that the most beautiful of al) its bujlding.- was dedicated to God. Selfishness would have counseled that the largest expenditure lie made upon private residences, but the people here had given their chief treasures to honor God. Tlie pioneers were men of simple habits, who lived before the days of secta rianism and sectionalism. They found many perils, endured trials, and learned by sore experience the'r dependence on the Divine Being, and the truth that God is love. Ho rejoiced to see the progress and prosperity of the people of his earliest home. lie was not here for an address, and would not mar the effect of the solemn service of this beautiful temple of worship by expressing more ihan a formal tender of this site to Bethel church. Iu conclu sion he said: “ May He who rules in heaven liless, individually and collectively, this whole community, and may His bene diction rest on this house always. More than tliis it would be improper for luo to say.” Rev. E. V Dieken, in answer, said : “Wo thank you heartily for your welcome, gilts, and will hold it ns an offering to God, which shall lie kept hi the beauty of holi ness. Whan wo ‘pass over the river to rest under the shade f the trees,’ wo will transmit it in purity and simplicity to our children. We thank you, also for the gifts of the beautiful silver communion service which your modesty kept you from naming.” The Service is of solid silver, the chalice inscribed, “Bethel Churoh, Fain lew, Ky.” Rev. Dr. Baker offered the dedication prayer. Mr. Dickon t lion announced that the total cost of building and lot was jlllal), all paid in but $700. The first Bethel was a church organized In 1814, seventy-two yours since. The char:was not largo nor wealthy, and had been liberal. lie wished, however, to give all persons in this large audience the privilege of wiping out the remaining debt. In a-.ewer to the call *576 were subscribed i.; n few minutes, the Indies responding liberally. The choir then sang a closing anthom under the direction of the pastor’s wife, Airs. A prominent bunlne.fi i niau in Wilming- ton. Del., in speaking of a cure of oancor on himself, writes to the Morning News of that city: I can say further that my ease is not an isolated one. A lady, a customer of mine, was sulterli.g from a canoerous affection of the nose. She had spent a great deal of money and time running to Philadelphia to consult the best physicians there, but could get but little or no relief. About n year ago I told her of my cuse, and in duced her to try the 3. 8. 8. remedy. She did so, and in a .eiv weeks was much bet ter. She had several operations perform ed, and was disposed to hold on to her old treatment a-s well us the new, but finally she threw all aside but the 8. 8. 8., and in two months from that time was thoroughly cured. Another lady suffering from an abscess on her arm had been doctoring for a long time in this city, Chester ana Philadelphia, but could not get any relief, apparently. She had fallen away to a mere shadow of her former self, and could scarcely eat or sleep. She commenced to take ihc 8. S.
