m DAILY!ENQUIRER - 8HN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 25, ISM. TIIK PIMPKI*. WHimnn. 'Oh. izrecnl.v oud fuir In the land of the sun "The vines of the (tour,I and the rich melon run Ami the rook ntirl the trees amt the cottage en fold ■with broad leaves all greenness and blossoms all gold. .Like that which over Nineveh’s prophet once While he waited to know that Ills warning was true, And longed for the storm-cloud, and listened in vain For the rush of the whirlwind and red flre-rain. On the banks of the Zenil the dark Spanish maiden Comes up with the fruit of the tangled vine laden; And the Creole of Cuba laughs out to behold Thro’ orange leaves shining the broad spheres of gold; Yet with dearer delight from his home In the North, •On the Holds of lus harvest the Yankee looks forth Where crook-necks nio coiliug, and yellow fruit shines And the sun of September molts down on Ills vines. ■“Ah! on Thanksgiving Day, when from East and from West, From North and from South, come the pilgrim and guest, When the gray haired New Englander sees round his board The old, broken links of affection restored, When the care-wearied man sees his mother once more, And the worn matron sm’les whore the girl smiled before, What moistens the lip and brightens the eye? What calls back the past like the rich pumpkin pie? •‘Oh, fruit loved of boyhood!—the old days re calling, When wood grapes were purpling and brown nuts were thllr’g, When wild, ugly faces we carved In its skin, Glaring out through the dark with a candle within! When we laughed round the corn-heap with hearts all in tune, Our chair a bioad pumpkin, our lantern the moon, Telling tales of the fairy who traveled like steam In a pumpkin-shell coach, with two rats for a teaml” TWO DOLLAR CERTIFICATES. A llrlef ami Interesting Amount of Tlici: Washington, November 24.—The new :l*2 silver certificates are being printed, and some of them will soon be in circulation. The engraving of the $5 certificates has been begun, after tiie designs approved by .Secretary Manning, the first of the month. There may be slignt changes made in the scrollwork and ornamentation, but the essential features of the note will be those already determined upon. The front will have a flue vignette portrait of Gen. Grant on the right, representing him in a civil ian costume and with a square cut beard. The portrait, unlike most of those of Grant engraved at the bureau of en graving and printing, represents him late in life, just before the close of his Hecond presidential term. Adjutant- •General Drum calls it the best portrait of Grant he has seen. The printing on the face of the note will lie mostly in light and pretty type, with the word “ United States” finely engraved on a curved panel, ornamented at the ends. The word “ five” will be in plain, legible type, and a lathe counter on the right will give a large fig ure, and another counter on the left will give the Roman numeral. The words: “ Act of August 4, 1886,” will be in small type in the ornamental border. The num bering of the certificate will be duplicated over the Grant portrait, and in the lower left hand corner of the note. The seal will be printed in red just above the signature of Register Rosterans. The back of the certificate is to be different in design from anything else issued from the treasury. There will be a medallion representing the liberty heud side of the standard silver dollar, standing out clear and round in the middle of the note. Around this is a lurge or amenta! mass of lathe work with laps on each side over an other silver dollar with the eagle face visi ble. This Ians in turn over another dollar AVith the same lace to the trout, making With the one in the centre and the two on each side, five coins represented. This striking combination is well set off on a panel of cycloidal ruling, with an unusually wide and handsome border of lathe work. The words ’’United States” are printed in large old English text across the face of the four coins on the sides, but the middle one stands out untouched, separating the two words. This back will have a unity of design and an effective beauty superior ■to the back of any other note. The n one of the note, though handsome, is not con sidered quite so artistic in effect as the f2 certificate wit h the vignette of Hancock on the left and the finely engraved scrolls and panels on which the wording appear.'. The detail of the designing and the fine ness and excellence of the engraving of all these silver certificates surpass anything heretofore produced by the government, and reflect great credit upon Chief Graves, Superintendent O’Neill and the designers and engravers of the bureau. The issue of silver certificates of all de nominations will go on steadily now, un less suspended by some new legislation of congress. Estimates to permit the finish of the work has been included in the sums asked for by the bureau of engraving and printing, and will be taken from the regu lar appropriation made in the sundry civil bill.
