One of the saddest deaths that the Enquirer- Sun has been called upon to chronicle in a long time is that of Mr. Meyer Greentree, which oc curred at his home on Fourth avenue at 8 o’clock lost night. Scarcely a week ago he was at his place of pusincss a perfect picture of health. One can hardlv realize that he is dead. His death is said to have been earned by catarrhal fever. Meyer Greentree was a native of Baltimore, but he had been a citizen of Columbus for a number of years. He was a clothing merchant and was a genial und enterprising young man. He was about 28 years of age aud leaves a wife and one •child, who in iheir deep bereavement have the sympathy of this entire community. HU funeral will not take place until to-morrow, as his moth er who resides in Baltimore, will not reach this city before to-night. Death is indeed sad when city yesterday. The Flint River Improvement. Colonel P. M. Slaughter, who has charge of the government improvement vvorks on Flint river, was in Albany Tuesday and was interviewed by the News and Advertiser with reffbrence to tho work on the river below Albany. The barges are now at Mingo’s island, eleven miles below that city, and the river is in good navigable condition, at low water, up to that point. Colonel Slaughter estimates that five months actual work will bring the barges und open the river to Albany. Goat island and the Blue .Springs shoals are tlje only places that will give much trouble. Thirty-two hands are employed on these barges, and last month the force removed 1100 cubic yards of rock at an average cost of 00 cents per yard The condition of the river has been very favorablo for tho work during the last three month s. Colonel Slaughter says that he has been order ed to make a sutvey of the river from Moutezuma to the old Indiuu agency above that point. One oi* the Knenpes Arrested. Chief Palmer received a telegram from an officer at Tuskegee Ala., yesterday informing him of the arrest at that pluc* of Allen Ilood, alias George Brooks, the colored hoodoo doctor who escaped from jail here a little more than two weeks ago.
