A writer for a leading New York paper says: President Cleveland is not considered by his friends a good judge of men. An Albany gentle man who was here recently said that when Mr. Cleveland was governor Col. Lament and Lieutenant-Governor Hill were on the constant lookout to prevent him from being imposed on. He was too much of a diplomat to ever contrudict the governor or interfere with him in his first ecstaey of discovery. The way he would take to en lighten Mr. Cleveland wouid be through indirection. The next time the lieu tenant governor would happen in the office Colonel Lnmont would call out to him and announce that so and so was in town, giving the name of Mr. Cleveland’s latest favorite visitor. Then Mr. Hill would respond by saying: "I won der how he got enough money to get to Albany,” and then would go on and give an exact valuation of the man socially and politically. Mr. Cleveland would pretend not to listen, but it was noted that after such a conversation had taken place in his presence he always refused to see his new discovery the next time he called.
