Niagara Farrs, November US.—One
•more chapter to the romantic history of
Niej/iira river was added this afternoon by
the feat of George Hazlitt and Miss Sadie
Allen, both of this city, who made the trip
■of the Niagara whirlpool and rapids in a
"'his was the first time alt
barrel. Tlus was the first time a lady has
■ever attempted the feat, and curiosity was
aroused to the highest pitch, Ilazlitt went
through the rapids and whirlpool on the
.-8th of last August with William Potts, so
I he knew about what there was in it. In
i order to avenge themselvea of on Graham,
■ the pioneer in the enterprise, who had
slighted them, Ilazlitt and Potts decided
to lave a woman go through to take away
his glory. Thanksgiving eve Miss Sadie
Allen, Potts’ sister-in-law, was visited and
the matter proposed to her, anil she said
at once she would go, so it was at ouco ar
ranged. Potts and Ilazlitt yesterday went
to Chippewa, Ontario, and towed up the
barrel. This morning Miss Allen went to
‘the Falls and stopped at Michael Hearn’s
hotel on Falls street. She said to your cor
respondent:
A BRAVE OIRR.
“Yes, 1 have fully made up my mind to
mako the trip, nnd I think 1 can truthfully
say that I am not afraid. The boys asked
me to go and I am sure they would not
take me where 1 would be Injured. I might
■for what I know, be just as well killed
mow as any time, but of course I don’t think
T will be. The papers say 1 am 18 years
old, but I might just as well tell you 1 am
20, as V have no wish to conceal ft. The
story that I have a husband who is in Chi
cago is, of course, a lie. I never had a hus
band and don’t expect to have, I am an
orphan, and aside from my sister, who is
with me, and two brothers, who are en
gineers on the railroad, 1 have no friends
on earth. My father, John Al
len, died seven years ago, and my
mother passed away thvee years ago
last June. My father was a railroad man,
employed by the New York Central at
Bast Buffalo and always kept me in good
style. He was a member of one of the
Buffalo Masonic lodges, and, God bless
them, they have done enough for me since.
His life was insured in tlio Masonic Life
Association of Western New York, but
owing to his long sickness we were unable
to keep up the dues and the policy ex
pired a few days before his death. The
.masons paid the funeral expenses and have
-continually helped me since. Throe
•months ago I was sent for to take care of
I’Mrs. John Scully, who lives at 1073 Senaca
sorest. Buffalo, and have been with them
•since..’’
THE START.
The couple in their barrel started on
their perilous voyage at 2:30 o’clock, from
■■the old Maid of the Mist landing, on the
’Canada side. Miss Allen, when sho appear-
■ed at the ferry, ready to enter upon the
perilous journey, wore a neat walking
dress. Taking off her hat and jacket, and
throwing a shawl over her head, she
stooped Tightly into the barrel through the
man-hole, tucki
it her and laughingly remnrking.
me, George, jump in; I’m all fixed,
latter, Ilazlitt stepped into the craft,
to their duties, and It Is necessary to be nt
t ho department about 8 o’clock.”
And when do you get away ?
■‘O that depends. Sometimes I got
through by 5 o’clock, sometimes bv 6, but
I generally have a lot of work tdBdo at
night beside.”
It is not merely the private secretaries
wlio work long hours either. The mem
bers of the cabinet themselves do so. Bven
Secretary Manning with his enfeebled con
dition is working late nt nights and on
Sundays, preparing his report. Take a
walk past the residences of any of the cab
inet officers and you are liable to see the
lights in their studies burning until mid
night. They have their desks in. their
houses and work nt all hours. He is an
early riser and It is no uncommon thing to
know that he is closeted with some mem
ber of the cabinet or Col. Lamont until
midnight or luter, hard at work.
Take a walk post the treasury any night
and you will see large numbers of the
rooms lighted up and employes at work
catching up with the work of the oflleo.
Only the other day I heard un employe in
one of the divisions of the treasury say to
one of his fellow-clerks, “I will be down to
the office at 8 o’clock to morrow to help
get that work up.” There are lots of them
who tnke their work to their homes with
them. This is especially the case with the
profeasors in the scientific resumes. They
take a personal interest in their workand as
the appropriation made for it is small they
generally are willing to give a good deal of
time to it even at ridiculously small sala
ries. From my window where I sit writ
ing this letter I look directly upon the
window of one of these scientific gentle
men. 1 can almost nlways see a light in
his study window until midnight or there
abouts, sometimes much later. He does it
for the love of the work and because be
cannot bear to see it neglected. Watch
any of the cabinet officers as they go home
and you will see that they take a bundle of
work with tVem to be disposed of at home
during the evening.

At 2:55 the new suspension bridge was

in reply to tho greeting. It was just 2:51)
when the turn In the river was passed at

'the rapids begin. Here the buttle began.
The barrel rolled and dived, being out of

At 8 o’clock the whirlpool was reached,

went down once seemingly for good,

It continued for 51)0 rods probably, and
then turned back just as fust, and came
