DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN, COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 4, 1886. from the Three 8tetee Told In Brief Paragraph*. U Albany Tonng Gentleman Nhoots Himself While Aaleep-A Sc&ro Accidentally Shoot* HI* Ohlld Through the Head-Other Hatter* of Gen eral Interest. The organization of a gas company is being mooted in Dalton. p y The new opera house will be opened in Dalton on the 10th inst. Mr. John M. Munday has assumed edi torial charge of the Jonesboro News. Saturday night some depraved wretch cut and mutilated in seven places a horse belonging to William Lafferty in Athens. Mr. Lafferty thinks he knows the motive and is on track of the rascal. Ninety-one marriage licenses were issued In November in Chatham county, twenty- ahc to whites and sixty-five to colored, tn September 107 licenses were issued and in October eighty-seven, making a total for the last three monthB of 286. A gentleman, largely interested in the building of cotton compresses, says that on the completion of the M. and A. rail road to Madison, or just as soon as its com pletion was regarded as a foregone conclu sion, that a cotton compress would be promptly built in Madison. In Burke county Silla Smith, colored, about 36 years old, left her home and hus band and two small children, one a baby about a year old, about two weeks ago for the purpose of visiting her son, Billy Smith, in Augusta, since which time noth ing has been heard of her, except that her son gave her money to return home on. Her husband, Henry Smith, has been told that she was the person whose body the old man in Shake Hag furnished the medi cal students, and he is in gloom and al most crazy about the lost Evangeline. Dick Felder, the colored sexton, was re turning to his home at Amerieus Saturday night, and while going down Wynn street, near the old cqpietery, was set upon by some unknown party and pretty badly beaten and cut up. He managed to free himself from his assailant finally and made his way home, where he is still confined. A warrant was sworn out Sunday morn ing against Simon Ellis, who is suspected ofhaving made the assault, and he was ar rested and put under a bond of $100 for his appearance. Sam W. Kendall, a popular young gen tleman of Albany, has Oeen troubled with somnambulism for several months. His nervous condition is in such a shape that he performs many acts while asleep that are appropriate to his waking state. He has waked at the dead hour of night to find himself remote from home walking a lonely country road. Once he narrowly escaped serious injury from walking off the portico of his father’s home. Last Saturday night at 2 o’clock a pistol shot startled the family of his father, Mr. John M. Kendall, and a quick investigation discovered that Sam had shut himself through the little finger of the left hand while asleep. The bone proved to have been badly fractured by the ball, but the attending physicians entertain some hope of saving his finger from amputation. He dreamed that burglars were attempt ing to force an entrance into the house, and he arose, taking his pistol to defend the premises. It is supposed that lie cocked the weapon and discharged it acci dentally. Alabama. Tuskegee has only one bar-room. The colored normal school at Tuskegee has 320 students. The Alabama Conference Female Col lege at Tuskegee, has nearly 200 pupils. Mr. B. F. Seay’s ginhouse at Midway, burned Wednesday night, with two bales of cotton. The $30,000 of new Birmingham bonds were sold Tuesday morning for $1.05. The bonds bring 8 per cent interest. The North Alabama conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South met in Florence Thursday at 9 a. m., Bishop E. B. Hendrix presiding. President Duncan states that the general offices of the Mobile and Ohio road will not be removed from Mobile to St. Louis, but only such divisions will be moved as are essential to the operations of the re cently acquired Cairo division of the road. The annual election of the Mobile and Ohio directory took place in Mobile Wed nesday and resulted as follows: Win. II. Hayes, A. Iselin, jr., August Belmout, James H. Fay, Henry Hall, J. P. Mc Mahon, Sidney Shepard, A. H. Stevens, Peter Hamilton, E. L. Russell, D. P. Bestor, Wm. Butler Duncan, T. M. R. Talcott. James Allison, colored, in the vicinity of Dayton, accidentally shot his baby, age ten months, on last Thursday. The ball entered the forehead just above the nose, passed through the brain and came out a little below and behind the left ear. The weapou fired was a small Southerner Der ringer of 12-eaiibre. Notwithstanding the skull wes penetrated and the brain matter oozed from both the entrance and the exit of the ball, the child is still living, and un der the circumstances doing remarkably well. The physicians pronounce it a very remarkable case. Florida. The public school at Orlando numbers 276 pupils. Madison has a first-rate cow doctor in the person of a young lady. Plant City has organized a literary socie ty with thirty-five members. Benjamin Dowd, of Eustis, is a candidate for treasurer of Orange county. The Panasoff'kee Orange Company has 300 acres in groves, 160 of which is natural grove. It is reported in Key West that H, B. Plant contemplates the erection of a fine hotel in Havana. A twelve inch drill is at work now cut ting an immense well for the Ponce de Leon Hotel in St. Augustine. A piece ot property near Tampa, known as Scripture’s grove, consisting of thirteen acres, sold recently for $36,000. A gang of burglars visited Hawthorne on Saturday night last and robbed tbc drug store and a dry goods store of quite a quan tity of goods, which they succeeded in get ting away with. The people in the western part of Alachua county are beginning to agitate the subject of a new county. They say they are tired of living from thirty to forty-five miles from the county seat. The body of a dead negro was found in a shallow pond of water between Rochelle and Grove Park a few days ago. The body is well dressed, but has evidently been dead several weeks. It is supposed the negro was murdered, as the remains indicated that violence was used. The body is still uuburied. The Palatka post office is doing an im mense amount of business nowadays, and Monday over $2500 worth of money orders were sold. The money order business is quite an institution in Palatka, and does a business equal to some banks, and all classes of people patronize it to a greater or less extent. Several improvements will be made in the post office soon to accom modate the rapidly increasing business, and the demand for boxes will require at least 200 lock boxes to put it, which will be placed in position pretty soon. MELLIN SiFOOD, the only perfect sub stitute for mothers’ milk, is recommended by our most prominent physicians as the best and safest food for infants. It con tains no farinaceous matter, which so often produces disorders of the stomach. novlO tu th sat&wlm Political A, H, C. Undoubtedly the right way to build up the democratic party is to protect ft against the pernicious activity of republi can politicians,—Chicago Times. THE PLANETS IN DECEMBER. Haialll, the Weather Prophet, (dree Their Dis turbing Positions, Mansill, the Rock Island, 111., weather prophet, in his December publication gives what he calls the earth disturbing condi tions of the planets as follows: Mercury in a longitudinal line with Nep tune, 1st; in like line with Saturn, 9th; in a similar line with Uranus: the 26th, and in such a line with Jupiter, 30th; Mercury is in perihelion, 3d, and in inferior conjunc tion with the sun, same date; Venus in su- f ierior conjunction the 2d, and in descend- ngnode, 5th. The principal disturbing positions ap pear to be located about the 1st to 5th, 9th and 10th, 13th to 15th, 23d to 27th, 30th and 31st, or as follows: 1st to 6th, Wednesday to Sunday; 9th and 10th, Thursday to Fri day; 13tn to 15th, Monday and Tuesday: 23d to 27th, Thursday to Monday; 30th and 31st, Thursday and Friday. The United States signal service will probably order hoisted the most justifiable cautionary marine storm signals for tlio following dates: 2d and 5th, 9th and 10th, 13t.h to 15th, 30th and 31st. The temperature of December, he says, should average about the mean of the season, both in the States aud Europe; with a full complement of storms. The storm from the 1st or 2d to the 5th or 0th is of the first grade disturbing force. The elements should be rather moderate from the 6th to the 10th or 11th—the time for a second storm of a second grade force. A third storm will occur from the 13th to 27t.h, and last one the 30th and 31st. There is a coincidence in Mercury’s in ferior conjunction and perihelion on the 3d, to-morrow. Mercury was in inferior conjunction and perihelion December 11 ‘and 15, 1872—these conditions, Mansill says, rather run to storms; earthquakes oc curred on the Oregon and Washington territory const, the 15th; Mr. Prevear, of Leominster, Mass., reported in the Scien tific American seeing flames on the sun 100,000 miles high, the 13th. Mercury was in perihelion, 22d, and in inferior conjunction 25th of December, 1878— Earthquakes at Flushing, New York, 21th. Mercury in perihelion December 29, 1884, and in interior conjunction January 3, 1885 —Earthquakes in New Hampshire and Ma ryland 2d; in New York the 14th, and in Spain the 5th—500 houses were destroyed in Spain the 5th. Mercury in perihelion December 16th and in superior conjunction of December, 1885—131 earthquakes de stroyed the town of Amatitiun, Gaute- nnala, the 18th. This will be a favorite time for astrono mers to watch the sun for a few minutes occasionally during the 2d, 3d and 4th. There will doubtless ofeur, as there gener ally does upon such occasions, unusual agi tations on the sun’s surface—if not some elevations. The sun has been compara tively clear from spots during November, more so than it has been for years. Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey and Duffy’s Formula. Dysentery, Diarrhoea, Cramps.
