THE GREEK PLAY.
,A Wmtern Hanagar Tints the Aehnrnlans In
Ills Own Intenee IHsgimt.
•Chicago News.
Col. John A. HntullD, lessee of the Grand
opera house, was In an ill humor lest even
ing. He had just returned from New York
wnither he went to see the performance
of Aristophanes’s play of “The Acharni-
ans,” and he spoke bitterly of bis experi-
ance.
“From what I rend in the papers,” said
he, “I gathered that it was a new play,
and as lam always on the qui vlve for new
attractions, I slipped quietly down to New
York to see the piece with a view to se
curing dates for Chicago in case the pro
duction was a success. I went around to
the Academy of Music and bought a seat
down in the parquet. There was a crowd
ed house, and the people seemed to be of
the better class. A Boston poet named
Lowell sat on one side of me and Mr.
-Curtis, the editor of Harper’s picture
E aper. Bat on the other side. The curtain
adn’t been up more’n a minute before I
began to get queered.
“‘Excuse me, sir,’ said I to the Boston
poet, ‘but I suspect I’ve got into the wrong
theatre. I wanted to see the new play of
‘The Acharnians,’ but I suspect that th'is is
the Dutch opera.’
“ ‘No,’ said he, ‘this is the new play.’
“I sat still a few minutes longer and
kept getting more and more tangled up all
the time;
’* ‘Do you think I could get a libretto ?’
said I to the editor at my left.
“He didn’t mako any answer; he just
gave me one look that made me feel as if I
had been playing to a losing business for
months. I suppose the management
paid him to talk up and write up
the piece. Well, of all the rot you
ever heard and saw, that play was the
worst. What made me particularly mad
whs that the Boston poet and the editor of
the picture paper seemed to enjoy it. The
only man in the parquet who appeared to
.sympathize with me was Mel. Hudson,
manager of the Coates’ opera house, at
Kansas City, he, too, had come on to see
about making dates for the Missouri cir
cuit. We stood it for about twenty min
utes and then got up and went out for a
seltzer lemonade, and we didn’t go back.
‘What is it?’we asked one of the ushers.
‘Greek,’ said he. ‘Greek be !’ said I;
■‘I wouldn’t swap a first-class American
farce-comedy for all the Greek plays in
the world! Come, Mel, let’s start back
■west.’ ”

Mow the Mint Julep Csme into Existence.
According to a Chicago newspaper, the
mint julep is an old colonial Virginian
•drink. It was invented in Virginia by a
wealthy planter, who had a corny

friends at his house. A great hail-storm
came up; he gathered the nail-stones, and,
on the inspiration of the moment, con
cocted that delicious beverage which we
call mint julep. Its fame spread, but at
first they never made it except when It
hailed.—New York Commercial Adver

The War Against Song Birds.
It is announced on the highest authority
that birds will again be in fashion for
women’s bonnets and hats. The protests
against the slaughter of the birds have
spent their force, and what has been well
called a heathenish custom is once more
to have its course.—Boston Record.

Advice to Mothers.—Mrs. Winslow’s
Soothing Syrup should always be used
when children are cutting teeth. It re
lievos the little sufferer at once; it produces
natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child
from pain, and the little cherub awakes as
bright as a button. ” It is very pleasant
to taste. It soothes the child, softens the
gums, allays all pain, relieves wind, regu-
lates the bowels ana is the best known
remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising
from teething or other causes. Twenty-
five cents a bottle. jel7 d&wly

If the republican management had noth
ing to do with the persecution of John Mc
Bride and other like infamous attacks on
democratic candidates in the past, why is
it that such suits and falsehoods never
make their appearance except when there
is a campaign on hand and republicans are
hard pressed for campaign thunder? It is
thought by McBride’s persecutors, the re-
g ubhean “boodle” state committee, that
y instigating proceedings at this time a
sentiment would be created against a
worthy and honorable gentleman, but
their gun was loaded with a charge that
went through the breech instead of the
muzzle.—Cleveland Plain Leader.
