—Afl'Y ENQUIRER • SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING. DECEMBER 9. \m. MR. DANA AND MR. CLEVELAND. T!ie Kdltor of tbe Sun Ue«|H)HilH to the char*. That III" l» Duo to a t’oraonal drier. Mice. New Yokk, December 7.—The New York Star is the great and only organ of the administration, and has been account ing for the opposition of other papers in- showing personal grievances. That of Mr Dana, of the Sun, was described as fol lows: “Mr. Cleveland conceived the idea of having a select dinner party at Alhanv .and concluded he would invite Mr. Dana I-fc accordingly commissioned Mr. Mann ing to approach Dana on the subject which was done, and the editor of the Sun’ said ho would go. Mr. Manning then told him that the governor would (lx a date and send him an invitation. The time passed on, the date was not fixed, the in vitation was not sent, and that particular dinner was never given. Hence these tears. The Sun quotes this and makes the fol lowing interesting remarks: “ All of this that is within our knowledge is true, ex cept the lastsentence, and we dare say that the rest is true also. In 1882, some months after the governor’s inauguration, Mr. Manning came and asked us if we would go to Albany and dine with Mr. Cleveland The reply was that, while it might be in convenient for a workingman to go so far for dinner, we would do it; but the specific invitation never came, and we were not very sorry. Dinners are not so scarce or i«o hard to get that a man need feel un happy because he misses one at Albany. In fact, we never cared a rap about Mr. Cleve land’s failure to send on his invitation, except so far as a valued friend like Mr. Manning might possibly be annoyed by it, and we never laid it up against Mr. Cleveland. The writer in the Star is en tirely mistaken when he supposes that anv tears resulted. Our controversies have been altogether of a more serious nature than any passing negligence of ceremonial politeness. We have opposed him because we saw that Ilia ideas and his conduct were often opposed to democratic princi ples, and that is the whole of it. Bat since these trivial personal circumstances are drugged out by semi offlciul revelation of facts known to ODly two or three individ uals, it is perhaps worth while to mention that, immediately after the presi dential election of 1884, we received through an unquestionable channel a personal message from Mr. Cleveland to the effect that on his part the siate had been wiped clean, and he trusted that such might also be the cose with the Sun, so that an entirely new account might be opened. To this manly overture we re sponded that the election had disposed of all the old questions, and that we should certainly gupport the administration in every particular in which it seemed to us democratic. That compact between the Sun and the president we have not varied from, and we mean to stand by it to the end. Yet we have not been able to ignore his wild and Wandering onset against sil ver, the Pan-Eleetric scandal, or the fallacies and follies of his non-partisan, anti-democratic civil service.” Malaria. The reduction of internal revenue and the taking off of revenue stamps trom 1 ro- prietary Medicines, no doubt lias largely benefited the consumers,as well as relieving the burden of home manufacturers. Es pecially is this the case with Green s Au gust Flower and Boschce’s Gorman Syrup, .as the reduction of thirty-six cents per dozen, has been added to increase the size of the bottles containing these remedies, thereby giving one-fifth more medicine iin the 75 cents size.
