ENGLISH VIEWS.
Ths Kluhcrlw (picutlon nn Trpntrd l,j the I'reel.
dent x'i'iiin to Suit the Britluh.
London, December 9.—The Daily News
commenting on that part ot President
Cleveland’s message referring to the fish
eries question, says; The two governments
ought not to allow themselves rest until
they have arranged the question. The
difficulty seems to be that America wants
fishing, while New England does not want
free trade. The same insatiable greed for
protection underlies the difficulty about
the disposal of the surplus revenue. Pro
tectlon will die hard in America. It is
however, beginning to be regarded with
Increasing popular mistrust. The proposed
revision of the tariff may be the beginninir
of the end.
The Dally Telegraph says: Never were
words included in a message which more
deserve the earnest and prompt attention
of a British ministry. To leave the disoute
open, if it can in any way be adjusted,
would be the height of criminal short-sight
edness.
The Times says: It is fortunate for both
parties that the negotiations are in the
hands of the governments instead of those
of the immediate disputants in the fishery
question. Opposing interests seem too
strong in America for any movement to
ward free trade.
The Standard says: President Cleve
land’s message is a sensible and statesman
like production, and eminently specific.
A note of menace is not heard. Although
In describing the fisheries question he
.throws undue blame upon the Canadian
fishermen, yet not a word is spoken to ex
cite hostility or rekindle strife.

Free Trade.
The reduction of internal revenue, and
the taking off of revenne stamps from Pro

benefited the consumers,as well as relieving
the burden of home manufacturers. Es
pecially is this the case with Green s Au

as the reduction of thirty-six cents per
dozen, has been added to increase the si/e
of the bottles containing these remedies,
thereby giving one-fifth more medicine m

WANT A WESTERN MAN.
Sion. Beverly Tucker Talk-. About the Solid South.
Non York nod the Brent Hist.
New York, December 9.—Among to
day’s arrivals at the New York hotel was
the Hon. Beverly Tucker, of A Irgmia, who
gave his views on politics as follows .
“The people did not turn out to vote in
Virginia*and my state. Ther.e are several
protection districts that the democrats
could not beat. We are opposed to cml
service reform and not to theLP^ esl w j,'
Will the south be solid in 1888 .Will,
that all depends on who is nominated ly
the democrats. If either Joe McDonald,
Allen Thurman or Speaker Carlisle
is nominated the south will g
solid for him. We want a western man.
The south and the west naturally go to-
gether, and we can electa pr- sklent with
out the aid of New York. Wo can carry
Ind.ana, Michigan and perhaps one or two
other western states, and that will elect
our president. It is a delusion to suppose
that New \ork will always be the pivotal
state. True, the empire state has Si el.-e-
toral votes, but the solid south has 157,
which, added to those western states I
have mentioned, with the eastern demo
cratic states, will elect.”
“Do you think President Cleveland can
carry the solid south?”
“PresidentCleveland has two more years
Jo servo, and we cannot te.ll how tilings
will be at the end of that time.”
