Parker, of Macon, was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning. It was the work of an incendiary. Daniel E. Quitman, of Savannah, got in a row in a house of questionable reputation Monday night, for refusing to pay for SSSJfKRSS: w “ character of the preachers. The case has been placed in the hands of Athens law- yers, and will be at once pressed. Matthew Meyers, a colored school teaoher, was arrested last week upon an Indictment found by the grand Jury of Marion county, in which fie is charged with making false returns in his school re port. Captain J. M. Zachary, vice president and one of the foremen of the oil mill at Conyers, had one of his arms badly mash ed at the mill Tuesday morning. It was caught between a belt and a pulley, and though the flesh was considera 1 ly' torn no bones were broken. ’ J. D. Cooley, postmaster at Leo, White county, has been arrested for erabezzement of the mails and has been placed under bond. Mr. Cooley is a wealthy and sub stantial gentleman, and the people who know him declare that he is innocent of the charge. The charge is that he ab stracted from a letter |150. At McDonough Saturday night about midnight the citizens were aroused from their slumbers by the tramping of many feet. It turned out to be a general negro row in one of the dark alleys of town, which resulted in the cutting of a negro by a white man named Sawell. When the negro received the stab he ran, and the I crowd followed with curses and yells that I made the blood run cold, but they did not I succeed in catching him. He has uot been ! heard of since, and it is not known wheth er he is dead or alive. The news reached Athens Tuesday of the killing of a negro boy in Jackson coun ty by a sou of Mr. Fayette Williumsou. A negro came to Williamson and told him that the negro boy who was killed said that Williamson was a liar, and Williamson ! went to his house and asked the boy if be bad made the remark that he was a liar. The negro at first denied having said it, but afterwards told Williamson that he was . a liar, and used other rough language, when Williamson drew his pistol and killed him instantly. An Augusta geutieman received a letter j from Liueolntou Tuesday, which says a riot occurred in the upper portion of Lhat county iu which two whites and one negro were badly wounded. The letter says Cabe Ramsey and Tom Levorctt went out to arrest a negro for stealing, aud upon reaching his nouso found a crowd of ue- i groes congregated, who lired upon them as they approached, wounding both quite •eriousiy. They returned tfc.e fire quickly, and succeeded in wounding one negro. The letter says a band of 100 men formed lu Lincolntou and went in pursuit of the negroes It was feared there that the whites would have to tight desperately to conquer the negroes, as there is a mean gang in that portion of the county. Liu- colnton is a loug ways from any railroad, . consequently nothing further has keen . heard from them. Alstiiius. I There are fifty-two prisoners in the Mont- ’ gomery county jail. The Alabama conference met in Mont gomery yesterday. Mr. H. Isaacs, an old citizen of Montgom ery. died Tuesday morning. Two negroes wore killed at Birmingham Monday night by officers who were raid ing a gambling don. Mr. Wm. A. Morgan, member of the town council and a citizen of Prattville for a number of years, died on Monday. Dr. Reese, of Van Dorm lost his gin house by Are Monday night. There happened to he but little cotton iu it. Tits origin of the fire is unknown. One of the ice machines being made by the Montgomery Iron Works is for the Mont gomery Ice Company, and will increase the capacity of that establishment to forty tons pc r day. The Birmingham board of education has voted to build a half dozen fine houses for the schools, to cost in the aggregate near ly a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. One of them will bo a high school build ing. The chief of engineers reports that the amount of last year’s appropriations re maining o hand for the river amt harbor work iu Alabama is as follows: Chatta hoochee, $16,000; Columbia, $8256; Mobile harbor, *90,000; Black Warrior, £102,000; Tallapoosa, *8139; Warrior and Tombigbee, $37,000. Florida. The new Scandinavian church at Pensa cola wa3 dedicated Sunday. An effort to reorganize the Masonic lodge in Apalachicola is being made. William Jackson has been appointed postmaster at Daytona, Volusia county. The Orange county tax books show, out of an assessment of about *92,000, there are but *572 delinquent.’ C. L. Frie'ole, one of the oldest citizens of Tampa, died on Thursday last iu uis i-u year. Ho settled in Tampa in 1318. Express rates on oysters from Cedar Keys to Jacksonville have been reduced to 59 cents per barrel. The former rate was 60 cents. J. M.
