■npf DAILY ENQHREn - y T T * • WI FAfMIS. rwmfflA. FRIDAY MORN DIG DECEMBER 17, 1X86. A Domrstlr Kpfsodf. The president sat in his easy choir, With Lament as close i> c.»uld be, And the president's wife sat over there, With her sewing upon her knee. Said the president: “Dan, here's a job for you; My head fi>r the problem’s too thick. Before you retire 1 wish you would do A sum in arithmetic. "With twenty-five congressmen lost this year. Which seems to be nearly our fUte, Where will we be-say, Dan, do you hear? In the gutumn of eighty-eight?” Dan bit at his nails, and scratched his head, For the problem puzded him so. "Why, maybe, perhaps,” he stammered and said, Then declared he didn't know. The sweet little lady over there Looked up, but not at the men, And shortly said, with a ftu-away air, ( *His teeth will be cut by then.” "My teeth will he cut by eighty-eight? I thought they were cut long since.” The sweet little lady hung down her bead, Bo busy with scams and fells. And, blushing a little, she softly said, "I was thinking of something else.” —New York Bun. THAT RIDICULOUS ROBBERY. A Lsdf INwv-iigi'r’. Nlorj of flow It Wa, Bon*. Snrrt ndiT Without IteslMu.ee—Thlrvm shot hj> I’nnuilng Onlrirn. Catithaoe, Mo., December 13.—Ac counts of last Saturday’s train robbery on the Fort Worth and Denver railroad men tion the name of Mrs. Wittich. She is re ported as protesting in vigorous language against a train loud of stalwart men sub mitting to such an outrage at tho hands of three men. Mrs. Wittich, who lives in Carthage, arrived home this morning and was called on by the Republican corre spondent for her version of tho affair. She says she was sitting on the second scat from the back of the rear car when her husband, who had been looking out of tho window, told her that a robbery was going on outside. She looked out and saw two men with pistols and six or eight men in line with their hands up, and another searching them. When the facts flushed upon the mind of tho passengers in her cur that it was a train robbery, the ques tion of resistance was discussed and several plans were suggested, but it was then as certained that not a man in the car had a pistol in his possession and all idea of re sistance vanished, and how to secrete money and valuables became THE ABSORBING QUEST TON of the moment. This was quickly done by depositing their money und valuables in every conceivable hiding place. Mr. Wit tich gave|partof his to her to keep, put Home iu his shoes and retained the silver pieces. After the robbers had looted the smoker, two of them entered tho car she was in and, leveling their pistols at passengers, commanded “hands up I” which was quick ly obeyed by all In the car. The process of robbing them commenced, one of the robbers holding his pistols on the crowd while the other culled up each passenger in turn, beginning with the one nearest to him. After rifling his pockets, the robber ordered him out to the front door and called up the next man. They stationed themselves on each side of the aisle, imme diately in front of the stove and about three feet from the front door of the rear car. After searching two-thirds of tho men the FREEBOOTERS BECAME NERVOUS and in a great hurry to get through the job and ceased searching, and simply or dered tho men to hand over their valuables, which some did, while a few denied having anything and were allowed to pass on to the front car. Ouo fellow, when ordered to leave, demurred and said his wife was in the car, and it was then the chief robber remarked, “We do not molest ladies.” and forced him out. Many ludicrous incidents occurred during the time. From the moment the passen ger* first discovered the errand of the ageats to tho time they entered the rear car was perhaps fifteen to twenty minutes, and during that time the uneasiness llrst experienced had worn oil' and the passengers regained their com posure and good humor, especially as they had safely deposited theii wealth beyond ihe reach of* the highwaymen. Mr. Jones, of Vernon, had $2300 in the in side pocket of his vest. While •.arching up in line ho heard the robber demund a watch from one of the unfortunates. That was his first thought as to his own flue f :old chronometer, ami he immediately owered one hand, unfasn ned Ids chain, and dropped it in his clothing. Reaching the robber lie hnnded him thirty cents, but remarked, “He wanted it to'lmy his dinner.” The robber told him to keep it, as he was not worth a cent anyway. 1TAD TO SUBMIT. “Mm. Wittich, what about the surren der of tho passengers without resistance ?” “Oh, as to that, I suppose that discretion was the better part of valor in this in stance, as the gentlemen had no weapons, and 1 am satisfied if they h id been armed the robbers would have bean captured then and there. 1 think, ffowever, the g allant soldiers in the front car could oasily ave defended us.” “How many ladies were there in the car?” “There were five or six and they were tho coolest passengers on board, and the idea that il would linvo frigh’ened them for tho soldiers to have captured Die rob bers I think was an afterthought. The truth is, in our car there were no armed men and apparently no trepidation, and the gentlemen obeyed tho orders of the robbers like tittle men, Bimply because they could not help themselves.” “How much was obtained by the rob bers?” "I understand from a gentleman on the train, who asked each passe nger ns to his loss, that they obtained about $S0 cash and E robably a half-dozen watches. The rob- ers did not pass through our ear as they went through the front door, unhitched their horses, and rodo ofF very leisurely in a southerly direction. It was in an open country, no trees, ravines or masks, ana no attempt at concealment. They wero a rough, bard, seedy, ill-looking set of vaga bonds. The only danger was the possible accidental discharge of a pistol in the hands of the nervous robbers.” NATURAL GAS. A Cincinnati Company Proposes to Supply the Towns Along the Upper •liio from Wells in Benin County. Maysville, December 15.—In 18S3 an oil company was organized in West Vir ginia for the purpose of prospecting for oil in the adjoining portion of this state. They prospected iu Martin county, but in stead of oil found gas. At a depth of about 1300 feet they discovered two natural gas deposits with a flow estimated at 15.000,000 cubic feet daily. Hearing of this discovery some moneyed men from Cincinnati form ed an incorporated company styled the Kentucky and Cincinnati Natural Gas and Fuel Company, and some time last fall they purchased these two wells, from which natural gas has been continu ously flowing for tne past three years. They also bought about 1000 acres of land In tne region of the wells. This company now proposes to convey this gas in the pipes from Martin county to Cincinnati—a distance of about 200 miles. They havo already contracted with Catlettsburg, Ash land, Portsmouth and lronton to supply fuel gas at a cost at least 10 per cent. Jess than the present fuel bills, and are now negotiating with the citizens of Maysville. Mr. Isaac Rigdon, of Cincinnati, is in the city representing his company, and the people here are very much interested iu the project. The form of contract explains tile nature of tho company very fully, and it reads as follows: “In consideration that the Kentucky anil Cincinnati Natural Gas and Fuel Company, a corporation of Kentucky, construct a pipe line from their properties situated in Martin county, Ky., so as to deliver natu ral cob in sufficient quantity and suitable quality for fuel purposes in the city of Maysville, Mason county. Ky., within eighteen months from the date hereof, we, tlie undersigned citizens of Maysville, should we desire to use said natural gas for fuel, hereby agree to buy sufficient of said natural gas from said Natural Gas and Fuel Company to meo all the fuel requirements in aud about our several residences, stores, warehouses, factories and offices for a term of ten years at a price not to exceed 90 pur centum of our monthly fuel bills. Pro vided, said Kentucky ana CinciDnAtl Nat ural Gas and Fuel Company delivers said natural gas to each subscriber at as low a price as any other company furnishes the same.” Maysville is at present especially inter ested in the gas question, since the organ ization of the Citizens’ gas-light company a year ago reduced the price of gas from f3. per 1000 cubic feet to only 75 cents to private consumers. Besides, the introduc tion of fuel gas will make it impossible for the coal supply hereafter to givo out just at a time when the people need it most. Fuel gas will be u good thing for all the towns along the Ohio river. A Probable Itrsnlt. It seems to be the general opinion that the result of the Campbell divorce suit in London will be to elevate Sir Charles Dilke in the estimation of the public.— New York Graphic. Free Trade. The reduction of internal revenue aud tho taking off of revenne stamps from Pro prietary Medicines, no doubt has largely benefited the consumers,as well os relieving the burden of home manufacturers. Es pecially is this the case with Green’s Au gust Flower mid Boschee’s German Syrup, as the reduction of thirty-six cents per dozen, has bcon added to increase the size of the bottles containing these remedies, thereby giving one-fifth more medicine in the 75 cents size. The August Flower for Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint, and the Gorman Syrup for Cough and Lung trou bles, have perhaps, the largest sale of any medicines in the world. The advantage of increased size of the bottles will be greatly appreciated by the sick and alflicted, iu every town and village in civilized coun tries. Sample bottles for 10 cents remain tho same size. octl2 d&wly A Hlxiiiiprelieimion.
