The residence of H. H. McClure, in Home, was burned Wednesday. It was a frame building and burned rapidlv, not- withstanding the firemen were nromntlv on hand. The furniture was saved The Joss is $2000, insurance $1200. This is found panted up in a blacksmith’s shop in Jackson : “Notice—De copartner ship heretofore resisting betwixt mo and Mose Skinner is hereby resolved Dem what owe de firm will settle wid me and dem what the firm owe nettle with Mose.” Mr. William Hnrper, sr., of Midway, was attacked by a hawk while squirrel‘hunt ing in a swamp a week or two ago The hawk darted down and seized his hat with its cle ws, when a struggle for the hat en sued. As the hawk flew away Mr Harper hurriedly fired at it without effect, and found himself with a torn hat and clawed hand. • The county commissioners have decided not to issue any more licenses to retail liquor dealers in Dougherty county, out side the oily of Albany. There ure now thirteen places in the county, outside the city, where liquors aro sold, and the hold ers of these licenses have been notified by the commissioners that after their present licenses expire they cannot get them re newed. Two little brothers, grandsons of Rev. Xj. A. Pattillo, of Glascock, aged about 4 and 6, were playing on the mill ruce when Eugene Patrick, the younger, fell in where the water was very deep. The owners and controllers of the Gads den Water Works Company have sold out to Frank T. Redwood, banker and dealer in southern securities, and Basil B. Gordon, capitalist, both of Baltimore. The respite given Jim Miller, sentenced to hang for muider in Choctaw county, Wu3 granted to give the attorney for the prisoner tin opportunity to take the case to the supreme court. It is possible that the condemned man may yet strike a turn in the tide and save his neck. Thirteen of the city convicts in Selma in formed the guard Wednesday morning that it was too cold to work. When or dered to proceed they sat down and posi tively refused to do so. Street Superin tendent Smith was informed of the muti ny. He .procured a shotgun, with which, mid accompanied by two well armed depu ties, proceeded where the mutinous gang Were sitting idle. When lie arrived lie or dered the gang to work. A Birmingham special under date oi the 12th says: 1 he expected arrest of Sheriff Truss and Dep uty Sheriff Dave Brown and the four po licemen concerned in the killing of the negroes Halsey and Harris, night before last, was something of a sensation ail to day. This morning at the mayor’s court R. Cicero O. Benjamin, editoi of the Negro American, arose and addressed a few woras to the mavor, calling attention to the fact that nobody had been arrested tor the kill ing, and asking that something be done in the direction of an assurance for the pro tection of the colored population at large, for whom he spoke. The mayor replied that he came to court determined to give special attention to the affair in question, and, turning to Marshal Pickard, charged him to arrest every man implicated in the fatal shooting, ill order that I he guilty might be punished fur the killing and the innocent vindic- ted. The street talk that this incident started was stimulated auriu„ tlie morning by reported expressio ns or Truss and Brown to the effect, that they Wouldn’t be locked up alive so long as the. had shooting irons and ammunition.
