lias made a survey from the south part of Girard
to the Columbus and Western r.idroad bridge
above Browncville, with the view of running the
11 bile and Girard railroad track over that bridge
and doing away with the one now used. The

very exp, naive and it is extremely doubtful if it
will ever be adoptod.

Some Interesting Note* and Don*Ip About the
Entertainment.
The fair closed at 0 o’clock yesterday evening
and will reopen this evening at 7o’clock.
Miss Matilda Dorn, tf.e efficient postmistress,
wishes it to he remembered that all letters re
maining in the fair post c.fflce will be forwarded
to the dead letter ofTlce to-night.
Miss Mabel McKnight has given most earnest
attention to her department of the fair. Miss
MabePta one of our prettiest and most attractive
young ladies, and any enterprise she undertakes
Is necessarily a grand success.
There cannot be found a more efficient or earn
est worker than Miss Bocklo Stern. She is al
ways the right person in the right place.
The hearty efforts of Mr. and Mrs. E. II. Jen
kins are highly appreciated by the managers.
Mrs. Lyons, of the Domestic Venture, is cer
tainly mistress of the situation. Mrs. Lyons is
old enough to know her business and young
enough to make a success of it.
The receipts arc encouraging, and the contri
butions from home and abroad to continue pour
in upon the surprised and delighted managers.
The managing committee say the/can now see
the whole building except- the steeple; and, for
the steeple’s sake, they concluded to hold the
fair open Monday and Tuesday nights. They
ask a continuation of the liberal patronage which
the good people of Columbus have already ex
tended them.
Hev M. Harris Is still far ahead In the rice,
and fVom the present outlook he will be the hup*
py possessor of the handsome theological “trans
lations,” which is the prize of the contest.

The Obsequies fiver the Dead Nnn.
The Atlanta Constitution of yesterday says:
“The funeral services of Sister Catharine, the
superioress of the convent of the Sacred Ileait
whose death was chronicled in yesterday’s Con
stitution, were conducted yesterday in St. Peter’s
and S . Paul’s church, on Marietta street. The
tes were peculiarly solemn and impressive, and
were gone thr. ugh in the presence of a large
crowd of sorrowing friends of the de
ceased. Solemn high miss of requiem
was chanted. The altar was dressed
black. The officiating prie ts were the
Revs. Father Kelly, O’Brien and McMahon. At
the conclusion of the beautiful ceremonies of the
Catholic church, Father McMahon pronounced
a touching eulogy on the deceased sister. He ad
verted lovingly to her modest worth, rare devo
tion to duty, beauties of heart and mind.and held
up her life as an example to all young women.
In tlie afternoon the remains were conveyed to
the Central railway train and carried to Savan
nah for interment. They were accompanied by
Father lie Mahon and a number of the deceased \s
friends.
Death of an bid Negro.
Louis Grant, an old steamboat negro, was
hurried yestorday. He belonged to Col. Peyton
Colquitt, and came hero with that family sixty
years ago. Louis was 87 years old, and folio we l
steamboating until about fifteen years ago, when
he served as watchman on those boats which
wore tied up for the summer.
Many of our young men from 25 to 30 years of
age well remember him, and were the plague of
the old man’s life when they used to go in
“washing” from off the b >ats. It was Louis’
Htrict orders to keep the boys off the boots, but
they went all the same.
About fifteen years ago some dozen or more
down-town boys wore hiding from the watch
man, and had gotten on tlie wheel of the old
steamor Shamrock, which was made fast with
ropes. The boys were Intenly engaged in a
game of seven up on the wheel when Louis
spied them. 11c creeled up to the rope that held
the wheel and quietly untied it, and hel l
it in his hands ready to let
go. One of the boys sang out, “‘What’s trumps?”
Just then Louis let go the rope and the rapidly
revolving wheel precipitated tho surprise.I
urchins into the river. As the cla vier of tho car ls
rose, spluttering and spitting from the water, ho
held tlie ace of spades up to the old negro and
said, “That's trumps, you old hound.”
The name of the old man will recall those hap
py days, and, at least, the above crowd of b jys
will draw a sigh to his memory.

The Columbus Rea ling Club, a semi-social and
semi-literary organization which bus been r •
cently formed, held its second meeting at the
residence of Mr. nnd Mrs. Harry Bruce on Broad
struct last evening. It was a most enjoyable af
fair, especially the singing of Mrs. Bruce, which
was a vocal treat such us few companies have
the pleasure of hearing. Among those present
was Miss Sallie Harrison of Nashville, daughter
of the distinguished divine. Rev. Dr. W. P.
Harrison. Dr. and Miss Harrison are the guests
and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce, and will
be iu the city for several days.
The club adjourned at 11:30 o’clock, and with it
passed away one of the pleasantest evenings ever
spout by any company.

HOTEL ARRIVALS.
A Strange Deformity.
Yesterday an Enquirer-Sun reporter w itnessed
a strange deformity in the shape of an inftint.
The child was born in the Northern Liber ies
and its parents were white. The body was per-
f. ctly formed, but its head wss strangely shaped.
The face was perfect, except that it had the ap
pearance of belonging to a person at least 80
years old. There was no head from tho eyebrows
upward. The top of that portion of the head
which formed, looked like a piece of raw ‘teak.
The infant was a nine-months child, but died In
a short time after bl th. Dr. Sheridan expressed
it to the Atlanti medical college yesterday.
