Grimes died at Spring Hill, in this county, last Monday at the advanced age of 109 years. He moved to this county sixty years ago, and joined the Baptist church 55years siuco, and has always been highly oslecmcd or his honesty and probity, llo was a native of Georgia. —Troy Enquirer. First Riiptist Church. Rev. Thomas Dixon, of Goldsboro, N. C., will "pYeacli 11 a* m. At night the pastor will preach the last of the series of sermons, on “God in Nature—Topic, Spiritual Intuitions and Ope rations.” Rev. Mr. Dixon is a talented and eloquent young divine, and a large congregation will uo doubt be in attendance to hear him. He will spend the Christmas holidays in the city. Death of Mrs. Lucinda Wynne. Mrs. Lucinda Wynne, of Browncville, aged 80 years, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Eliza Cates, at 10 o’clock Friday night. She had been ill about seven weeks, and died of old Oge and general debility. She was a good and faitbftil woman in all the relations of Iffe, and was a devout member of the Baptist church. She leaves four childreu, Mrs. Cates, Mrs. E. J. Hol ly, Mr. W. W. Wynne of Montgomery, and Miss Amanda Wynne. The funeral will take place at 2 p. m. to-day. lilt on llio head with a Bottle. Last night Baker Lewis and Palm Palmer had a difficulty in Mr. H. H. Daniel’s store. Baker hit Palm several severe blows on the head with a bottle, inflicting painful wouuds. Policemen Ryckley and Jackson arrested the belligerents and lodged them in the guard house. l)r. Grimes was sent for and he found it necessary to make two or three stitches on the injured negro’s head, owing to a small artery having been severed. Palm was put to bed and was resting quietly early this morming. Columbus Free Will Baptist ( lurch. The church of this name heretofore constituted in Banks’ building has been removed to Temper ance Hall, where services will be held every Sun day morning and night. The church now has twenty-eight members. On last Sunday services were held at the ball bv Rev. D. P. Macdonald of Blakely, assisted by llov. Messrs. John Fuller and W. C. Duifell. Mr. Silas DeWolf, of the Birmingham and Goodwater extension surveying corps, returned to the city yesterday to spend the holidays. In speaking of the new road he said: The corps to which I am attached under Captain W. E. Crum finished their survey on December 10. We sur veyed from Childersburg beyond the tunnels, a distance of twenty-two miles. The other corps under Captain Lewis, is now finishing the line. The contractors of the road are Messrs. Dunaven, Tate and Bardelebiu. They have given a heavy bond to have the road ready for business by Sep tember 15, 1887. They will do it, though the task is a herculiun one. They will have to cut two tunnels—one 1200 and one 2400 feet lung. They will also build au irou bridge across the Coosa river, at Childersburg. LOCAL LACONICS. —It never rain» without It pours. After the dust came the mud. —Tne most sensational paragraph of the season will soon bo announced. -Sixty-three cases were returned to the Jan uary term of the city court. —As will be seen, the schedule of the trains on the Mobile and Girard railroad changes to-day. —Indications for Georgia: Fair weather, varia ble winds, becoming westerly, and slightly colder. —There is to be a big race at the old track next Friday afternoon. There have already been five entries. —Invitations are out for the Christmas german of the L’Allegro German Club, which will take place on the 23d. —Christmas purchasers from everywhere crowd ed the streets yesterday, and ladies shopped rain or shine. —The market is frill of possums. The persim mon trees have borne more’ possums than per simmons this year. —The English sparrow has possession of Colum bus. When one is killed a dozen more come to the fbneral and stay. —Mr. Hatt Williams and Miss Bowman wero married at the residence of the bride’s parents, near Cataula, Thursday. —The anniversary exercises of the St. Luke Sunday school will take place to-night. The programme has already been published in the Enquirer-Sun. —Ed. Redd, who has been serving a five-years’ sentence in the penitentiary, returned to the city yesterday. Mr. F. ! J. Allen succeeded in spotting the man and had him arrested in tliis city yesterday morning by Constable Abney and taken to Gtrardand turned over to Constable Hood. A warrant was sued out for burglary before Judge Tucker. The trial was called at 2 o’clock p. m. The prosecutor asked the court to continue the case until he could hoar from the unfortunate man’s folks who, he says, live in Savannah. The accused is about 20 years of age, and gives his name as Bun nell. His actions and looks cause the people to have great sympathy for his condition. He ad mitted to Justice Tucker in court that lie stole the Bible, hut went in at the door, which he suys was partially open. He says his reason foi steal ing the Bible was that ho was starving; and he sold it to get something to eat. Judge Tucker announced that he would give the accused every reasonable chance to hear from his folks. He says he has a brother and mother iu Savannah, Ga. Lecture and Prayer Meeting. If the weather is favorable this meeting will be held at 4 o’clock, sharp, this afternoon. There is room for all who will attend. Religious papers will be on hand for distribution. J. II. Campbell.
