Had kist the frosty sky; J
While twinkling stars were yet alert
lu Heaven’s canopy; J
It roused me from my cozv bed,
SjnieUjristm^ gilts to hide
Within the stockings, hanging limn
Against the chimuey’s side.
A doll far May, also for Nell,—

Thalflllsthoh- shapeless little feet
Down to their very toes.
This done, I hied mo back to bed,
And tried to lall asleep;
But ere I shut my weary eves.
I sa vv our Mabel peep,
Then sly ly slip irom out her bed
And to the chimney steal,
And into cv’ry slocking there
At once begin to feel.
*Then back to bed she quickly went
And wlmner’d in Nell’s ear:
Get U p! Old Santa Claus has come
And left some pretties here."
■Out jump’d the two upon the floor,
And kept up such a clatter,
■3™lt Adah woke and ’gun to ask:
ois Mamie, wha’s er matter?"
’™s u, t0 ° n , ulchl ” their mother saicl-
They’ll surely wake the baby:
O,c? n 't you send them backto bed?”
A t I could say was: “Maybel”
flhen Collins guve a whoop and turn,
And, quickly ro.llng over,
Began to crawfish out of bed
• And pulled with him the cover;
And crawling to the fireside place—
His sisters saw him coming,
And handed down his kettle drum—
And he commenced ^drumming
His little i yes were all ablaze,
And, in another minute,
He’d torn a head from out the drum
To find out what was in it.
I watched them from my pillow-rest,
My precious girls and hoy,
And could hiit envy them their youth,
Their innocence and joyj
And wondered when another year
Had rolled its length around,
If I would hear their prattle then,
Their merry voices sound ?
With breakfast o’er, I kissed their lips,
And then embraced their mother;
Her tearful eyes a iyief betrayed
She vainly tried to smother.
I drew tier throbbing breast to mine,
l’ushed back her nut-brown hair,
And on her brow I pressed ray lips,
And rained warm kisses there.
When, gazing up into my face,
’Mid sobs, she sadly said :
■“ This is the birthday of our James,
Our loved, our lost, our dead!
Just one ami twenty years ago—
A happy Christmas morn—
The angels tarried at our home,
And gave us our first-born."
-‘Twelve months ago that noble boy,
So young and strong and proud,
lissayei’ to fight the world alone
In far-off city’s crowd,
Led on by high ambition's aim,
Resolved to dare and do,
That toilsome weight and cares might fall
Less heavily on you,”
And how one day a message came,
“You know, dear, how it read;”
“God pity you,” the words began,
And ended, “He is dead!”
'“Anil yonder in the churchyard still,
Where weeping Billows wave
And droop their mournful branches down,
They've made his hallow’d grave,”
Ah 1 do you wonder I am sad
This holy Christinas day?
That I’ve no heart for dolls and toys,
And romping children’s play?
Nay. ask me not to smile and sing
The songs of other years;
My heart has naught to comfort it
Except these welling tears.”
1 led her past the parlor door
And drew to her a chain
And on my knees I meekly bent
And asked of God in prayer,
That comfort for her troubled heart
His love alonecoulil bring;
That love which dries the mourner's tears
And robs death of its sting.
And then I took the Bible down,
And read a saci ed page
Bo full of love and coiufortings
For every rank and age;
Then all about the little Babe
The good old shepherds found
Hid in u lowly manger bed
On Bethl’em’s hallow’d ground,
And how he grew and waxed in strength,
And preached the Father’s Word—
His blessed promises -that "all
Should live with Him, that heard.”
I read about the lowly Christ
At Jordan’s sacred lount;
His words of hope and comfort in
“The sermon on the mount.”
And then X read about the cross,
The death on Calvary:
The sa rifice that God had made
For us—for her and me.
And then I told her God was good,
His slain Lamb was the test;
He was not pleased in ohast'nmg us,
And did all for the best.
Perhaps, dear wife, God took our boy
To dra w us neat er Him.
And bring us safely to His fold,
Where’s neither death nor sin.
She raised her Heaven-lit eyes to mine
And said: ‘.’His holy will be done”—
I give to God my heart, my all,
And yield to Him my son.”
Thc children heard us laugh and sing,
And ran to learn the noise; , ,
And brought with them their dolls and drum,
And other Christmas toys.
God's sunlight shone upon their cheeks,
And in their little eyes .
There beamed the sparks of happiness—
Bright gems from Paradise.
A halo lingered o’er the gionp,
I knew that God was there,
And, in His plentitude ol love,
Had answered me my prayer.

Up to a few weeks ago T considered my |
self the champion Dyspeptic of America.
During the years that I have been afflicted .
1 have tried almost everything claimed to
be a specific for Dyspepsia in the hope of
finding something that would afford per
manent relief. I had about, made up my |
mind to abandon all medicines when I no- j
tieed an endorsement of Simmons Livisr
Regudator by a prominent. Ueorgian, a j
jurist whom 1 knew, and concluded to try
lls effects in my ease. 1 have used but
two bottles, and am satisfied that 1 have
struck the rigid, thing at Inst.. I felt its
beneficial effects almost immediately. ;
Unlike nil oilier preparations of a similar
kind, no special instructions are required
as to wluit one shall or shall not eat. This
fact alone ought to commend it to all
troubled with Dyspepsia.
