“The Coiumhus, Ga., cotton mill people will
build a fourth mill and put in $250,000 worth of
machinery in their other three mills. A Griffin,
Ga., mill company lias just received a large order
from China. The company will put in $13,000
worth of new machinery to make checks
in cottonndcs. The Atlanta cotton mills
have been re-organized by a Lowell,
Mass., company, by which cheaper and thr bet
ter work can be done. The newest machinery
has been put in and the old put out to sell to
some starter. The demand for knit goods iu the
south is so active that a Columbus concern has
just doubled its .capacity, and is turning out too
dozen half hose daily. The Newton, N. C., cotton
mill people are filling up their works with a lot
of new Lowell, Massachusetts, ma
chinery, and a company has just
been formed to build u weaving mill at Hickory,
N. C., for colored goods. The Muntsvill people
will soon have one cf the finest cotton mills in the
south, and a new cotton mill will soon be in run*
niug order in Lexi-igton, N. C. The Knoxville

At 12:30 o’clock supper was announced, and ihe
guests repaired to the dining room, where they
found the tallies laden with the choicest of
viands and innumerable delicacies. The festal
board was crowded, and frill justice was done to
the rare dishes which were spread before the nu
merous guests.
After supper dancing was resumed, and it was
in the wee sma’ hours when the parting came,
it is seldom that we witness such u parting.
Pleasure mingled witl sorrow there was pleas
ure because all had enjoyed to the utmost the oc
casion, and Tiorrow because there was such a
thing as parting.
If there is one thing that is more enjoyable
than the old custom of now year’s calling and re
ceiving, i; is a german given by the young ladies.
And, when Columbus young ladies decide to
give an entertainment, it is a foregone conclusion
that it will bo a success. They eclipsed all pre

gr.icitude-of all those who were so fortunate us to
be present.

An Elegant Sociable.
One of the pleusantc t and most elegant enfr
taiuments of the season was tlie sociable giv
lust evening by Mr. and Mrs. Hariy Bruce iu Public schools
honor of their cousin. Miss Sallie Harrison, of
Nashville. About thirty guests were present,
and the evening was enlivened by conversation,
music and a variety of amusements. A number
of sougs were rendered by the young ladies,
which were highly enjoyed by the company. At
eleven o'clock supper was announced, and
the guests on entering the dining room were
confronted by a table, which in the absence of
tholauies would hive been a banquet in every
sense ofthe word. Every delicacy, almost, ofthe
season was there. V ands, hot and cold, were
served in every possible style that tiio culinary
connoisseur’s art could suggest. Tin. ^e were fol
lowed by raisins, nuts aud fruits of every possible
variety. The table was florally decorated in a j
striking manner, which added highly to the i Moot* HI ill ftomiu
