There nre those who suppose that the
origin of the umbrella Is to be sought for
in man’s need of some portable protection
from the rain, which need found expres
sion in the Invention of the tnodurn 11m-
lirclla. Philology and science, however,
point to a different conclusion, (he former
telling us that the umbrella is associated
with shade rather thau moisture, and the
hitter that It Is a relic of solar worship.
'.lh word “umbrella” Is a reduplicated
form of the Ijitln word umbra, signifying
“shade,” and means really a little shade,
In the same way that callga (leggings) is
father to the word "cnliqula” (little leg-
Kings).
Having decided the origin of the word,
we will next proceed to give the view of a
certain learned specialist as to (ho deriva
tion of the article itself. The umbrella,
according to our authority, is a relic of
solar worship, was probably Imported
from Persia, and Its origin has no more to
do with keeping oil rain than with kiiqi-
lag oil lightning or thunderbolts. The
Persians, it is well known, were worship
ers of the heavenly bodies, the sun occu
pying the same place among their hier
archy of deities as he does among his own
orbs. Viewing him as all powerful, as
all intelligent, cognizant of the smallest
act of their lives, the Persians lilt at last
upon a sort of portable screen which they
might Interpose between themselves and
Ms beams, securing for the former pri
vacy and for the latter Ignorance of what
his devotees were doing This may sound
a rather far fetched theory, hut it is prob
ably thi' true one, and whether or no, it is

In .Siam the possession of umbrellas fa

university towns of England etiquette dis
countenances under graduates appearing
on the streets with umbrellas, and only
p milts the airing of these luxuries to fel-
lonsuml graduates. In fiction the person
ot Mrs. Gamp has conferral on the um
brella an immortality which not even the
muse of tragedy could do. Indeed, the
Umbrella cuts lint a poor llgure in the
tragedy, while it is quite at home In the
flights of comedy or farce. Mrs. Gamp's

The umbrella Is sometimes used as a

Edwin Booth Imitating Himself.
The following story of Edwin Booth’s
alleged failure in imitating himself is in
teresting: During 1802 the brother of tho
“only Hamlet” was playing In Washing
ton and at the close of his engagement
was tendered a benefit. This was natu
rally a matinee, for, whatever may have
been the general opinion of the acting of
John Wilkes Booth, there was very little
dissent, especially among the gentler sex,
from the fact that he was the handsomest
man of the day. Eawin Booth being in
the city at the time, lie naturally at
tended, and went behind the scenes to
congratulate his brother on his bumper of
an audience. As Edwin stood conversing
in the wings a (lien popular character
actor, who had been giving imitations
of noted actors as his share of tho pro
gramme, came off the stage, and began
rapidly preparing to respond to a tremen
dous encore.
“What next?” asked Booth.
“I am going to give them you in the
‘Soliloquy,’ ” said tho specialist, ner
vously. “Bnt with tho original looking
on I know I shall make a mess of it.”
"I say, Ned," said John Wilkes, “ I’ve
an idea. Go on and imitate yourself.”
The proposition struck the tragedian as a
cotnical one. Has tily putting on tlu; mimic’s
wig and buttoning up Ids coat he went on
and delivered the celebrated spieeh of the
melancholy Dane. The nudlence applauded
wildly. The next mortimg The National
Intelligencer, the great paper then, said
that the. imitations ruined the perform
ance, each being worse than the others,
“while that of Edwin Booth was simply
vile enough to cause that famous actor to
shudder in his shoes could he but have seen
it.”—The Current

The American business man muy not
lay claim to his knowledge of literature
and (he fine arts, hut what is infinitely of
more value to him, he knows his trade
and his men. He may he slow at logic,
but he darts at chances. He shapes him
self to every exigency, and Is continually
switching into new tracks. To the spirit
of enterprise more than to any other
element In business life, nos been due that
rapid progress of America that lias placed
all the Institutions of our country so far
above those of any nation In tho world.
And nothing .should provo so hoalthful or
more stimulating to the young man enter
ing Into commercial life than this eon-
dltion of affairs. The spirit of the times
demands of him that ho must from the
very start tie alert to discover new ways
in business and find new methods by
which undertakings can he carried out a
hundred times quicker than a year ngo.
A safe policy for adoption in modern
times is to stick to the old method ns the
right policy, so long as no better way pre
sents itself. But when that new way Is
discovered lmste should be made to im
prove it. Men are no longer made, as in
times of old, but make themselves by
their own efforts and energies. True en
terprise je constantly on the alert to dis
color sonic new want of society, some
fertile source of profit or honor, some un
explored avenue of business, and is ready
to supply the one or take advantage of the
other.—Magazine Exchange.
