The 11 ret accident of consequenoe occurred on
the Colnmbns street railroad Just before sunset
Sunday afternoon.
A car that was crowded with pass ngers
started down Roee’HIU, when the brakes broke.
The car went down the grade at a lively
rate of *pe<d, and as it went fester and fhster the
passengers became alarmed and a stamp de fol
lowed. A number of parties jumped off, some of
whom sustained serious injuries.
Mr. George Layfleld. who lives in Browneville,
jumped off with his little girl in his arms. He
fell and his little girl's head struck against
a rock, fracturing the skull. Dr. Beth N. Jordan
attended the little sufferer, who is in a very criti
cal condition. She was doing as well as could
be expected last night, and there is a chance for
her recovery.
Mr. Hugh Glare, a young man about 18 years
old, also jumped from the car and
received an injury, the exact extent of
which is not yet known. Blood was oozing from
bin ear and mouth yesterday, which would seem
to indicate a fracture at the base of the brain.
Dr. Walker ia attending him, and can tell by to
day the exact extent oi the injury. He was rest
ing quietly late yesterday afternoon.
A negro woman who jumped from the car had
her leg broken. Au Enquirkr-Sun reporter
could not find the woman yesterday, nor the phy
sician ' who attended her. It is said that her
name is Smith or Jones.
Several o'her parties sustained slight bruises.
No one wlir, remained on the car received any
hurt of consequente, and it is likely that if the
passengers had kept their stats the accident
would have harmed no one.
The accident was due solely to the breaking of
the brakes, and through* no negligence on the
part of the Street Car Company or its drivers.
It is to be hoped that these who were injured
may recover.

Yum Kippur.
To-day after sunset begius the tenth of the
seventh month (Tlsliri) which is commanded in
the la vs of Moses to bo kept holy as the Yom

were offered for the occasion (so Numb. 29:7) and

was this occasion—entered then the sanctum
sanctorum, there to prav for all Israel. Since the
holiness at Jerusalem became destroyed and the
office of high priest abolished, Israel forms in
the more spiritual essence a kingdom of priests,
and each camrs the sanctum sane tor uni in his

Yom Hakkippuriu,became a Yom Kippur, i. e.,
day of atouemeut and not of atonements, as
each Israelite has to perform his own functions
in the propitiatory prayers and supplications.
This day is described by Moses, aud commanded
to be kept as the Sabbath of Sabbaths, a day
whereon to atfiht the soul, which term, in ancient
times, was understood as testing and praying,
aud up to this day this has beeu most teitliftilly
observed by Israelites. From sunset of the 9th
to sunset of the 10th day of the month no food
por even water touches the lips as refreshment
or nourishment. Iu the synagogues or houses of
worship the most solemn and impressive exer*
cises are held of all the year. Reconciliations
are effected not only between God and Israel, but
also betweeu neighbor and neighbor.
Appropriate services will be held in celebration
of this important eveut at Temple B’Nay Israel
this evening and to-uiorrow, to which all ure in

To tbe Ladle* of the City himI Vicinity.
We wish to call your attention to our fine selec
tion of goods that the season demands.
First—the first-class articles of our own manu
facture : Colognes, Bay Rum, Tooth Powders
Face Powders and our Pure Gum Tolu. The
face povder is made only of pure prepared chalk
(Crabs Eey) trituuted, and washed thoroughly,
so there is no grit or impurities in it. It is high
ly perfumed with Otto of Hose, Extract of Violet
and Ylang Yiang. Considering the articles and
the mode of preparing this powder it is the
cheapest and best ever sold. We guarantee it
not to injure the eyeB or skinln anyway. Any
one buying a box and is not perfectly satisfied
can return even the empty box and the money
will be refunded. The Gum Tolu is simply a pure
Tolu evaporated to a proper consistency, and ren
dered free from all sticky matter. Put up in neat
wood boxes and sells for five cents.
