t i ala, Ai a., September 27.—This city is wrapt

s vet, yesterday evtning, at 5 o'clock. She wilt
be buried, at 6 o’clock this eveniug, ..*0111 the
Presbyterian Church, of which she was a mem
ber. Mrs. Bray was the most universally e.
teemed and loved woman in Eufaula, and her
death iB a common ca'amity to every one. Hav
ing a bright mind and pure Chiistiau character,
she was an ornament to society. Of gentle man
ners and kind heart, she was everybody's friend.
8he will be missed from the social as well as the
family circle, for there is not one to take her
place.
A gentle shower has been fV'ing all day and

The steamer Fannie Fearn, which reached the
wharf at 8 o’clock yesterday morning, brought
the news that a dead body had been passed just
below the hospital.
Coroner f im Griffin was notified and went out
with a paity to search for the body, which was
found just below the hospital, near the centre of
the stream, lodged against the jetties. The body
was brought to the shore and was taken to the
court house, where an inquest was held. The
body was that of a negro woman, who might
have been aged anywhere between 16 and 40, as
it wan somewhat decomposed, swollen and dis
figured so that it was impossible to tell her age.
A thin calico dress partially concealed her form.
She was barefooted, and judging from her cloth
ing, she did not belong to the better class of ni-
groes.
The body was not identified, and at 2 o’clock
the coroner’s jury was sworn in and an inquest
was held. The testimony taken was as follows:
Dll R. E. GR-C'CiS, COUNTY PHYSICIAN (SWORN).
Alter thoroughly examining the body, which
is unknown to rne, I find no signs of bodily vio
lence, and it is my opinion that she was drowned
by accidental or intentional means. It is possi
ble that she zorumitled suicide. Her skill'con
tains no fracture, nor did the autopsy develop
any marks of \Iolonce. The hod) lias probably
been in the water since Saturday night.
JOHN LUNBJ OHD (SWOi’.N)!
I saw the dead body near the jet*y in the mid
dle of the liver in front of the bone yard, just be
low the hospital, this me ruing, Between 9 and 10
o’clock, f went to the body in a batteau and tied
a rope around it and brought it to the shore. I
don’t know the deceased. I was the first man
who saw her; Mr. Skinner and Sim Griffin were
with me at the time; we were looking for the
body, as the men on the Fannie Fearn reported
that they passed a dead body this morning.
JIM HILL (SWORN).
I don’t know deceased; I picked up a straw hat
in toe river Sunday morning about 9 o’dcck
about a half mile below the hospital; I saw the
hat first opposite the hospital; it was a man's
hat, and was floating down the river when I
caught It.
The following is the
VERDICT OF THE JURY:
We, the jury, upon our oaths say that the de
ceased came to her death from drowning by some
auses unknow a to us.

The body was buried late yesterday a.lernoon.
The matter Is still shrouded in mystery. Evi
dently the dead woman has no friends in this
city, or her disappearance would have been re
potted <o the police.

Chipley, Da., September *7.—Since onr la.t
communication to you it seem, that we, too,
have struck the key note of progress, and are
wheeling our prosperity with irresistable power,
to an imminent succt ga. Could you have the pa
tience to bear, and should we not be encroaching
upon the valuably .pace of your popular paper,
be it our endeavor to draw a .mail, pen picture
of oursc'ves.
Cbipley is situated on a high level plain,
nrth old Pine Mountain only in the
hazy distance, and should the crow
fly from the Methodist Church steeple,
which is not high, and, in its course of flight,
play to the horizontal it would flap its wing, on
the summit of the mountain. So you see, we are
high in more ways than one. King's Qap, a
pleasant summer resort, is a quiet drive of three
miles. White Sulphur Springs, over the hills, Is
only four.
Nature has smiled upon us iu many respects.
We claim onrselves conceited enough to presume
that never were sucli advantages so handsomely
managed by man as by our thrifty citizens.
In four yearn our town, touched by the
spring magic, unknown, was cut
from the stump, and to-day thirteen business
houses filled with various fines and plenty^ are
shining in our town. Together with these one
large ca.n'age manufactory, wltere fine buggies
are panned out; two blacksmith shops, ono good
hotel, five churches, inciudingco'ored. O - re
spected and plucky cit'rens have comoincd
tlieir money ami their sentiments to the: fu 1 1
completion of a handsome academy, and have
secured as good tuieut as can ho obtained, and
our school is marching to a success,ul triumph.
This in itself makes us almost a auccrss
I- ve new residences are being built and some
are exceedingly imndsome-
Cur tbri.y and cnterpi.slng merchants arc
busy handling the fleecy staple which our sr
tlon so copiously fatalities.
Just at this time houses to rent are in demand
and draw handsome money. Real estate is as
high as any town in comparison in the south.
This is good evidence of onr advsneement, out
side of what you see with the natural eye.
Our new railroads are flattering and show up
good indications. The bonds ."or the erection of
the Birmingham and Brunswick and
Birmingham and Great Western railway
are meeting with huge success. This road when
built will track the center of our town and cross
King’s Gap over the mountain.
Fearing that we are worrying you with solid
frets, and atourin, you that it is thus, and claim
ing a small dsgrae of notice in your oolumnt, and
knowing that our energetic men are using the
last of prosperity with prominent success, we
make our exit. Correspondent.
