Yesterday afternoon the height of the stand
pipe was sixty-five feet. The total height will
be 125 feet, including the top rail, or thirty-five
feet higher than the bell tower. The plan of
erecting the pipe is veiy interesting.
At present there is sirty feet of water in the
pipe, and as each round of plates is added, the
water is raised five feet. In the water is a float
ing scaffold, resting on thirty-six barrels filled
with air. On this scaffold is a
derrick by means of which the plates are drawn
up, as required. On the outside of the pipe are
three small covered scaffolds on rollers. The roli-

The can vatsing committee did not repo it yes
terday afternoon, owing to the extreme inclem
ency of the weather. The committees have not ! P - T i?£ ab ?“ t *° rt Ym inat ef in ascent. and descent
leisure. When a new round is begun the first
plate is bolted at the bottom to a plate of the last
round. One of the rolling scaffolds is then hoist
ed on the top of this plate. Another plate is then
riveted on and another scaffold raised. And thus
the process is repeated for each successive round.
Tne mode by which the workmen ascend
and descend is novel. At the top of the pipe, a
ladder about six feet long, is suspended by iron
hooks A long rope is suspended from the
derrick. This rope is secured around each man’s
waist and he is then pulled up. So fsr the men
have all ftescended for dinner, the process occu-
yet completed their canvass, and many other
contributions for the Jacksonville sufferers are
1 eapected.
