THE RAILROAD COMMITTEE.
Two Thousand Dollars Lack;eg—An Impor
tant Meeting this Morning.
Another hard cay's work was done by
the committee vestercav trying to com
plete the necessary {25,000 required of
Columbus to build the connecting link be
tween Woocburyor 'Warm Springs and
the Chattanooga, Rome and Columbus
railroad.
They have not yet been successful in
raising tue necessary amount, but, how
ever. only the small sum of $3000 is yet
wanting to fiii up the gap, and too much
depends to give up the fight this way.
The ladies have ga.lantly come to the
rescue, and helped the committee yester
day to the amount of nearly {1000. Not a
single one that was called on nas refused.
In several instances they said that they
would have felt hurt had they not been
allowed to contribute their mite to this aL
important matter. God bless them—we
wish that the men who havn’t jet done
anjthing felt like the ladies do in this
matter.
i here will be a very important meeting
held at the library at 10 o’clock this morn
ing to receive the’report of the committee,
who have labored so faithfully in this
cause. It is expected to be one oftne
largest and most enthusiastic meetings
ever held in the city. Ail are cordially
invited.

Willis Walker Accidentally Kills His
Broth r Thomas.
Thomas Walker, a colored boy about
; ten years of age, wss shot by his brother,
I Willis Walker, at their home, corner of
: Third avenue and Seventh street, last
night, the ball entering the back of the
I head and lodging in the brain. The boy
lived an hour and a half after the shot was
fired. A coroner’s jury was empanelled,
and the testimony showed that the shoot
ing was accidental.
It occurred in this way: The boy picked
j up the pistol that was laying on the bureau,
, which he did not think was loaded. He
snapped it at his brother, with the result
stated. The boy killed was ten years old.
and his brother twelve years. The father
of the two boys is the well known colored
shoemaker, Alexander Walker.
You said acveiusing did'nt par. I have som

rU lay a nickie that if you do sell yours that you
won't get near as much for it as I got fer mine.
Whatever is worth doing at a 1 is worth seme
red-eyed and hump-backed hustling. That's the
way it looks at me. I believe in doing things
right. and that is the reason I have tire reputa-
■- rion of having the most clean systematically sept
store in the city. I see after it myself, and I see
after the wants of my customers myself. When
yon do a thing yiurseif you know it is done
right. Of course just the reverse applies to some
people For instance I gave a quarter to a poor
blind msn the other day. and after awhile he
came back mad as an old wet ben and S3id as
how I hid (heated him: said that Mr. DiLing-
ham said it wernk no good. I told him to teli
Mr. Dillingham that I knew it was good, for I
made it myself. That settled him, and he went
off with a satisfied look as he mattered to him
self : "Sump'n n it.”
To the Tax-Payers.
We send the committee again to Atlanta
to make one more effort to save your prop
erty in the Alobile and Girard railroad.
They will make this last appeal to the
governor to stsy the ur just legislation on
your vested rights by interposing his veto.
If they fail, then you must appeal to the
courts for justice, for we are done.

OB. f. B. EDDY,
VETERINARY SURGEON,
A Splendid Showing and a Deceived Com
pliment to Col. Wilkins.
The following is taken from the Atlanta
correspondence of the Macon Telegraph:
| Among the reports Muscogee county
shows up next to Fulton, which stands at
j the head so far. The tax receiver of Mus-
! cogee county sent in his returns in the
| latter part of July, and the increase, as
i shown by these returns over 1S8S, was SI,-
J 750,COO, and of this the values in the city
: of Columbus showed an increase of fl,-
1100.000. While it is true that Muscogee,
| since her new railroads have been com-
I pleted or assured, has persistently Bhown
a marked increase year by year, yet it is
but justice to one of the most faithful
officers in the state to say that the
untiring energy and capacity of Col. F. G.
Wilkins, the receiver, had its foil weight
in this marked increase.
Happening in the comptroller’s office
yesterday I saw a copy of a letter to Col.
Wilkins. This letter is as follows:
“Atlanta, Ga., Jniy 31, 1839.—F. G.
Wilkins, Esq., R. T. R., Muscogee Co.-
Dear Sir: Your digest for 1SS9 received
and examined. I find it very aatisfactory
in all respects, and may safely say that it
has no superior in ail the essentials of a
perfect book, while the very large in
crease in the returns is a splendid tribute
to your diligence and the progress of your
people. Very respectfully.
