DARING TRAIN ROBBERS.
THET ARE IN THE HANDS OF THE LAW.
Chicago, Nov. 10.—Tonight Postoffice
Inspector Watkins, of Chicago, will arrive
here, 1 aving in custody William E. New
berry, who is said to be the leader of one
of the most daring train robberies of recent
years. June 6 a Northern Pacific train
was robbed at New Salem, N. D., by high
waymen, Two masked men climbed upon
the engine and compelled the engineer and
fireman to detach the engine from the
train and pall oat. Having taken the en
gine about twenty rods the engineer was
ordered to stop, and the engineer
and fireman were taken back to the
train where they were ordered to batter
down the door of the express car. With
the first attack on the car the Express
Clerk escaped from it and saved the con
tents of the safe, twice he carried with him
their keys. Having entered the car the
two robbers compelled the engineer, fire
man and postal clerk to cat open the mail
pouches and carry the first-class registered
mail matter to the robbers’ horses. About
500 packages, containing $45,000 in cash,
were secured. Bailey, one of the high
waymen, subsequently captured, is now
serving a term in the North Dakota Pen
itentiary. Search for Newberry has been
carried on by the postal authorities ever
since and he was arrested at Plains, Va.,
Saturday. Newberry comes of an excellent
Virginia family.
THE COTTON CROP.
ESTIMATE OF THE YIELD BY THE GOV
ERNMENT.
Washington, November 10.—The cot
ton returns for November to the Depart
ment of Agriculture are county estimates
of the yield per acre consolidated. Con
sidering the *areas with the rates yield,
with the correction only of obvious errors,
makes the average yield 187 pounds of lint
per acre. It is about the same as the yield
last November which was exceeded by the
results of a final investigation. Some of
the returns report killing frosts which
didn’t extend to a large area on the south
ern side of the cotton belt. Much will,
therefore, depend on the weather of No
vember and December, not only in per
fecting the growth, but in saving the
crops. Should the season continue favor
able, and the views of correspondents
prove conservative, the result may be
slightly larger than here indicated. The
quality of lint has been deteriorated by ex
cessive rains and injured by discoloration.
The estimated yields by States are as fol
lows: Virginia 108 pounds; North Caro
lina 182; South Carolina 175; Florida 108;
Mississippi 200; Texas 196; Tennessee 191;
Georgia 165; Alabama 160; Louisiana 238,
Arkansas 225.
MINISTER^LINCOLN
DENIES THE REPORTS THAT HE WILL RE
SIGN.
Washington, November 10. — Hon.
Robert T. Lincqln, Minister from the
United States to England, reached the city
this morning from Chicago. He called on
Secretary Procter at the War Department
early in the day and held quite a reception
among his old official friends. He looks
exceedingly well, being somewhat stouter
than he was while Secretary of War, and
he appears to be in the best of health. To
an Associated Press reporter he said
in the most positive manner:
“The stories to the effect that I intended
to resign my post, and that I shall remain
henceforth in America, are absolutely
false. I came here on leave of absence,
and shall remain for about forty or fifty
days, after which I shall go back to Eng
land and resume my work. Reports to the
contrary are without the least foundation.”
He afterwards visited the State depart
ment and made a brief call on Secretary
Blaine and Assistant-Secretary Wharton.
WATCHING THE COUNT.
IOWA DEMOCRATS AND THE COUNTY SU
PERVISING BOARDS.
Des Moines, November 10.—Chairman
Fuller, of the Democratic Central commit
tee, has telegraphed all the Democratic
county chairmen throughout the State to
be present to-day w'hen the official count
of votes is made by the Board of Supervis
ors in the different counties. He instructs
them to watch the count closely on the
whole State and Congressional tickets, and
report to him. The committee is under
stood to be preparing to take evidence in
Dubuque and Wright counties, in the
Third district, preparatory to a contest.
