CITY INTELLIGENCE.
George Has More Bad Luck.
George Pitts has had more bad luck. A
few days ago the Enquirer-Sun pub
lished a news item stating how George
was attacked and badly beaten by a party
of unknown men near Nances, it turned
out that George was not the man w-nted,
but this was not discovered until he had
been thrashed almost within an inch of
his life.
George came to town Saturday, driving
his mule to a one-horse wagon. He
brought his gun along with him, still
smarting from the beating he had received
and thinking that he would be able to de
fend himself should lie be attacked again.
bile on his way home, George’s gun was
accidentally discharged, the charge taking
effect in his mule and killing him im
stantly. The mule was valued at 812.'),
and the loss falls heavily on the unlucky
Deatii of a Good Man.—The death of
Mr. Mark A. Lott will occasion deep re
gret throughout the city where he was
well known and highly esteemed. This
sad event occurred at it is home in this
city at 0:30 o'clock last night, after a
lingering illness of congestion of the
lungs. Mr. Lott was thirty-nine years of
age. He came here from Fort Gaines
fourteen years ago, and kept books for J.
Kyle & Co. until about eight months ago,
when he gave up his position on account
of ill health. YVhile Mr. Lott was modest
and unassuming, he was a man of strong
character, and held the good opinion and
respect of all who knew him. He was a
) Knight Templar and a most devoted son
' and brother. The funeral will occur at
2:30 o’clock this afternoon.

Marriage Yesterday.—Mr. Edwin
A. Schenek, of Atlanta, and Miss Annie
Layfield, of Columbus, were married at the
residence of the bride’s father, on Front
street, at 11 o’clock yesterday morning,
Dr. Robert H. Harris, pastor of the First
Baptist church, officiating in his usual
graceful and impressive style. Quite a
large number of friends of the happy
young couple were present. An elegant
wedding breakfast was served, after which
Mr. and Mrs. Sclienck left for their future
home in Atlanta, carrying with them the
best wishes of their numerous friends
here.
Races Xmas Afternoon.—There will
be some good racing at the Exposition
grounds tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock.
There are over forty fine blooded horses
wintering and in training at the grounds,
and some of the best horses there will
take part in the pacing and running races.
It is likely that a large crowd will go
down to see the races.
Girard Officials Sworn In.—Mr.
F. M. Knowles, the new Mayor of Girard,
and the newly elected board of Aldermen
and other city officials, were sworn in at
3:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and at
once entered upon the discharge of their
duties. The oath of office was adminis
tered by Judge U. L. Martin.
Death in Girard.—John L. Burton,
the sixteen-months-old son of Mr. and
Mrs. R. H. Burton, died at their home in
Girard at 4 o'clock yesterday morning.
The afllieted parents have the full sym-
prthy of their many friends in the hour of
their sad bereavement. The funeral will
occur at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
A Delightful German.—The L’All-
gro German Club gave one of its delightful
germans last evening. There were a good
many couples in attendance, including a
number of visiting young ladies and gen
tlemen The occasion, like similar enter
tainments given by this popular social or
ganization, was a most pleasant one.
The Only Pure
Baking Powder.
{From Halt's Journal of Health.)
We feel it our duty to state that of a
number of different kinds of Baking
Powder purchased in a neighboring
city for examination, the only one we
found made of Pure Grape Cream of
Tartar, and that did not contain any
Alum, Acid Phosphates, or Ammonia,
and that was absolutely free from
adulterations, was
Cleveland's Superior
Baking Powder.
CHRISTMAS CHIMES.
HOLIDAY GOSSIP GATHERED HERE AND
THERE ABOUT THE CITY.
The public schools closed yesterday in
order to allow the children to enjoy the
holidays. The schools will reopen Jan
uary 5.
There will be a Christmas tree at Pearce s
Chapel Thursday night.
Arrangements are being made for a
Christmas tree at Southside Chapel during
the holidays.
Merchants enjoyed a fine trade on holi
day goods yesterday. City people did a
deal of shopping, and all incoming trains
were crowded with passengers from the
neighboring towns.
There will be half dozen or more Christ
mas trees during the holidays, and the
little folks are bound to have lots of fun.
This is Christmas eve, and it will be a
busv day with all. The stores will be
thronged with Christmas shoppers until
late tonight.
The Christmas turkey has about gobbled
his last gobble.
The mails are burdened with an un
usually large number of sweet-scented
missives just now.
The express office is crowded with work,
and Manager Charley Couch has pressed
several additional clerks and drays into
service in order that the business may be
handled without delay.
ON THE WAR PATH.
JAMES GUNTER MAKES THINGS LIVELY AT
CLINTONVILLE.
Parties who came in on the passenger
train from Troy yesterday morning brought
news of a row, which occurred at Clinton-
ville, a few miles below Troy.
It seems, that while under the influence
of liquor, Mr. James Gunter went to a
public gin and assaulted a negro with a
knife, cutting his throat twice and inflict
ing serious wounds. After being cut the
negro went to Dr. Garrett, bleeding freely,
and asked him to dress his wounds. While
the doctor was attending the wounded
man, Gunter again appeared upon the
scene and renewed the attack. The negro
fled to the woods, and at last accounts was
still in hiding. The exact extent of the
injuries sustained by the negro were not
learned, as he fled before the doctor had
finished the work of examining his wounds.
A Pure Comedy.—It is hard to find
any one word to describe the play, “Little
Lord Fauntleroy,” which is to be present
ed at Springer Opera House tonight.
Comedy drama is hackneyed to the last de
gree, and, after all, means no more than
comedy alone, for a comedy is a drama.
There is so much that is touching in this
—not sad, exactly, for there is hut little in
it to sadden—so much that keeps the
listener alone that undefined and unuefina-
ble border which lies between laughter anil
tears, that one scarcely thinks of it as a
comedy. Perhaps, after all, it might be
called pure comedy, for that laughter is
best which serves to shake the tears from
the lashes, brightening the face as the sun
brightens the earth after a summer shower.
And as the flowers seem more fragrant
and the bud sweeter for tile refresliin
shower of rain, so the heart seems lighter
and tlie feelings purer from having been
stirred by the emotions which this bright
little stage picture awakens. The drama
tization follows closely the incidents of the
book, and the play was charmingly simple,
fresh and sweet as the story itself.
The Special Railroad Commission.
—Mr. G. Gunby Jordan returned from
Atlanta last night, where he went to at
tend a meeting of the special railroad
commission appointed by the Governor to
pass on the betterments question.
The commission was organized by the
election of Hon. N. J. Hammond as chair
man and Mr. H. L. Parry, of Decatur, Ga.,
as clerk. Mr. Parry and Mr. Richardson,
of Augusta, will be the stenographers.
Col. Cooper Nesbitt, of Dade county, is
sergeant-at-arms. It was ordered that all
the pleas he printed and filed by February
10. The commission will begin hearing
the cause on February 28, 1891. It is not
known how much time the hearing will
consume.
Out-of-Town Rows.—For years past,
especially during the holiday season, rows
and disorderly conduct have been of fre
quent occurrence just outside the city
limits. The city authorities have been,
heretofore, powerless to interfere, hut are
now in a position to maintain order, as the
new charter gives them jurisdiction for a
mile and a half beyond the corporate
limits. Every effort will be made hereaf
ter to keep and maintain order outside as
well as inside the - city limits.
