A Horioun casualty, and one which has
cast a gloom over tho entire community,

and shower. Mr. G. H. Smith, a citizen
of this county, living a few inife-s out, well
known and r. -pi . i.-d by all, was sitting
with his family ..round his tire side, when
the lightmn - 4iu. k the chimney, and fol

Mr. A. was the first to revive after ll:
shock, and upon arousing hurriedly pr

About this time tho laborers', who had
been shut up in another house, during tho
storm, came in and told him tlm house
was burning. Mr. A. then proceeded,
with the assistance of tho workmen, to re
move the family, and by the time tliev

be saved from the flames, the roof began
to fall in.

healthier for this reason, and tho risk of a
sharp reaction much diminished. Staunch

St. Peter's (hiAiit. Tho “Glmir of St.
Peter,” which has boon spoken of und
known to Christendom for a long time,
was placed by Damascus in the baptistry
of the Vatican, und oven previous to that
age, it is probable thut up tu that period
it may have been kept in tho crypt of St.
Peter's tomb or iu the basilica of Constan
tinople. It was moved from chapel to
chapel of the Vatican before tho days of
Alexander VII., who enclosed it in a bronze
monument. It is a yellow ohair, formed
of four uprights united by horizontal bars,
two being higher tlmn the others to form
tho back. Tho four legs were evidently
ouco square, but they are much eaten away
by age, and have also had pieces cut from
them. These time-worn portions have
been strengthened and rendered more or
namental by pieces of dark acacia wood,
which form tiie whole interior part of tho
chair, and which appears to have hardly
suffered at all from thu same causes which
have ho altered the appearance of tho legs.
The punols, fronts, and Hides, and the row
of arches with tho tympanum above them,
which form the buck, arc also composed of
this wood. But the most remarkable
eumstuiice about those two different kinds
of materials is that all the ivory
liuments which cover the front and buck
of the chair are attached to tho acacia por
tion alone, and never to the parts com*
posed of oak. Home of the ormunentu-
tion is attributed to tho ago of Charlc
roagno, and Borne, such as tho labors of
Hercules, in the ivory panels, are more
ancient; tho oak work is deemed likely to
bo as old as tradition states it to I.
