THE RIVER AMAZON—ITS RISE AND

TIONS.
The Amazon rises in the little Peruvian
lake of Lauricuelift. just below tho limits
of per jet uni snow. I or «"»00 miles it flows
swiftly through a deep valley : then turn
ing sharply eastward it runs for 2.500 miles
across the great equatorial plain. For 2000
mile* above its mouth its width is H miles
—increasing to more than 10 miles in
width at the head of the deltu, where it
divides, and after ruuning 4m» miles, pro-
..euts a front of l.*»o miles upon the ocean.
Fur it great distance it is bordered by side
channels or bayous. From Santarem. the
principal town above Pars, one may pud
dle KM) miles parallel to the river without
entering the stream. For 2."* degree
latitude every rher that llows down
eastern slojie of the Andes is an alHucnt

Russia. The volume of its waters is even j
greater than the breadth of the river would (
indicate. At Nauta. 2:;<»" miles from its j
mouth, the depth is 40 feet, increasing .
rapidly as it Approaches the ocean. The j

The vegetation i»f tl.e valley is exuber

grand and beautiful trees, a wild, uncon- |

and festooned by creeping plant*. The
moment you land upon the shore you are
confronted by a solid wall of vegetation. I

THE WAR IN ST. CLAIR, ALA.
T1IE CAl'SE OF THE DIFFICULTY.
The Jacksonville) Republican of the
Kith gives sonio further particulars of the
radical war in St. (’lair county and tha
causes which led to it:
It seems that thero has been a split in
the ranks of tho republican party of that
county. John 0. Brown, Sheriff, being
the loader of the conservative wing, and
tho Spnngtields the leaders of the radical
wing. Bitter animosity has raged be
tween these factious, aud the resjvectivo
loaders are peculiarly hostile. Colleion
between them has frequently been immi
nent ; but it remained to a negro, as will
be seen, to hasten the catastrophe. It
of I Hppoars that the affair which in the evo-
the I terminated in bloodshed, had boen
brewing all day.
, ii t i, u | In the forenoon, some difficulty oc-
(irerJun united their I <, « rred between Brown and tho Spring-
r0c * - 1 fields, in which Brown drew his pistol and
held them at bay. Later, the same party
became involved with Mr. Doan, a very
quiet young man in which, if wo mistake
not, some blows were afruck. In the
evening, a negro, who had some benzine
on hand, was in a business house of the
place, swearing and cursing generally.
Ho was kicked out of doors for his trou
ble. This, in tho excited state of tho peo
ple, naturally brought a crowd to the spot.
The Sheriff, among others, approached
the spot, remarking something to which
the Springtields objected and which in-
du'-ed them to demand with threatening
di inoiif-trutions, if he “took it up.”—
Brown, it is said, began to retreat, the
Springtields following aud crying “halt,
until they had reached opposite tho law-
office of Mr. B. II. Nicholson, who step
ped out and demanded them to ‘‘halt."
At this the tiring on both sides com
menced. generally, and about one hund
red |>istol shots were tired without effect.
The tight became more ami more desper
ate, until some double barrelled shot guns
wa re brought to hoar and two of tho
Sjiringfields brought down—the prosont
member of the Legislature and a brother.
This terminated the tight, the Springtields
surrendering their arms and crying for
quarter, which was given.
All agree that the Sheriff was at-
t< nipting. the best he could, to preserve
tho peuco throughout the day. and was
only saved from being killed by his own
party by the law-abiding Democrats
1 lie mail ruler who came over yesterday
