Or Interent to Dehtoiui.—We alludod
to tho fact some days since, that iu con
sequence of heavy losses sustained by
grocery aud commission merchants sinoa
the war, that they had resolved to adopt
measures for their own protection. By
this arrangement planters, who have iu
pnst years run accounts at one store and
then failing to pay have opened acoounta
with other firms, will find themselves
shut out in the cold. Not only is it the
purposo of Columbus merchants to adopt
lueHNures to save themselves from further
pecuniary loas, but they are to act in ac
cord in ihis mutter with those of Macon,
Montgomery, Kufanla, Vnton Springs,
Opelika and other neighboring villages.
Thus merchants at all theso several places
are to furnish each other with a list of
their dehnguonU, which are to be kept
record for the publio safety. Thie ineas
tire of precaution and security we under
stand goes into effect after the first of
klarch. It is believed that many plan
ten have the ability to meet past obliga
tions, and have neglected to respond in
the expectation of rnnning accounts at
other lUacea. ft is now necessary to ax.
hfbM clear balance sheets here and else
where before further facilities will ba ex
tended. Of course merchants regret ne-
ceesity which forces the adoption of such
a system, but self-preservation ia the Ant
law of nature.
