enthusiastic in favor of railroads, but
thoro waa a division of aontimeut in re

We are indebted to n friend for the fol
lowing report of the proceedings:
At 12 o'clock Col. Mobley was callod to
the ehnir. A committee was appointed to
auk epcakerK on the stage.
'J lie following gentlemen wero invited :
Col. W. I). Chiploy, Col. Harris, Col. J.
L. Mtulian, Chita. II. Williams, Karp, Col.
Harden, Col. Lane, Dr. Rruce, Mr. 11 ud-
Mon and ('apt. J. 11. L*oti.
Col. Mobley explained that tho barbe
cue was a union one, to consider the in-
terst of Hamilton and Harris county in
tho two roads—North A’. South and Air
Linn. Ho then introduced Col. Lane, the
contractor on the North A South 11. R.,
who expressed to tho people his approba
tion of tho narrow gauge railroad systom,
and assured them ho would build tho road
to Hamilton, hud full coiiildeuco in tho
road. He was followed by Col. Harris, of
j Merriwether, who is a corporator of the
Ho niiido u most happy effort.
He wanted the people to subscribo to tho

iltou us soon as tho North A South lb K.
Stated that II. I. Kiiubull was the contrac
tor, ami tho road uould bo built.
Next ratlin Capt. Foil, who uiado an
eloquent speech in behalf of railroads
generally. Showed the groat advantages
that would result to II iriis county with a
railroad running through her centre;
wished both rouds success, and hoped the
citizens of Harris would not lose this oc-
cation to enhance her property,
Mr. Hudson, of Harris county, being
called upon, urged lus people to subscribo
their money, lands and anything else, if
required, to obtain n railroad ; spok
very enthusiastically of railroads and tho
development of Han is county.
The chairman then introduced ('has. Ii.
Williams, F.sq., from Columbus. llo
complained that tho arguments used by
the other speakers were too genorul. Thut
ho was an udvocato of both roads, but es

of F. W. Httzlehurftt started the
ball at a point on tho fifth section, near
the old WhitcHville road. To-day three
hundred and fiftccu men are actually at
w ork, and as noon as necessary shanties
and other preparations are completed,
say by Friday or Saturday, this number
will be increased to six hundred. We are
told that Jeff Laue'a excellent force will
occupy tho line nearest Columbus, follow
ed in rotation by Hammond &. Davis, F.
VV. Hazlohurat, J. Q. Fleming, Towles A
Co,, Darnell & Co., Greer A Co., and
others, representing a force, when fully
at work, of 900 men. We would advise
our friends in Harris not to take too much
trouble hauling their cotton over bad
roads to market, for they may rest assured
that the North A South will bring all they
may w ish to send to Columbus in time for
their Christmas settlements. Col. Lane
says tho first ten miles must be ready for
the iron iu two months, and every one
who knows tho Colonel know* that be
never makes an idlo boast. We congrat-
uluto our city and the county above upon
the assured success of this important
road. Already that great indicator of
prosperity, real ostato, has taken an up
ward tendeucy iu Columbus, and in the
suburbs $200 per acre was declined for
land heretofore offered for half this
amount.

New York, Jnly 29.—The spocial cable
dispatches add but little to the inform*- i niN, f &
tiort received of the dreadful famine iu i
Forsia. The drought lost year in thecen- ] by
tral and southern provinces, and the con
sequent partial failure of the crops cau.-ud
great destitution and misery all winter. At
the same time the taxes were increased
ou the people of Larislon, which brought
on famine, causing numbers of people to
leave tbeir homes and consequently de
crease the taxes to the government. The
new Governor promised to raise not only
the usual sum, but still more, and this
oppression drove the rest of the couni ry
people from their homes, and throng.id
tho cities which pay no taxes. Ibe fail
ure of the crops in Canstan wus rendered
more disastrous because tho other prov
inces which mostly raise opium, cotton
and silk, depended on it for their grain.
The results in Ispahan, Yeszd, Kirtnan
and Khaaz were terrible. By the end of
winter, before new crops, the cities will
be crowded. Wheat at Kirmau rose nine
times its usn^| prices and starvation bn.
gun. Yeszd raises opium. The peoplo
could buy no grain and they ate grass and
roots.

OBITUARY.
Departed this lifo July 22, 1871, in this
city, Sirs. F.lizaueth Ann Owen, wife of
tho Iuto I)r. Wiu. .1. Owen, of Alabama.
After a lingering illness of lunro than
three months with that terror of disease,
typhoid fever, which she boro with most
remarkable fortitudo nnd pationce, she
passed to her reward and rest as peace
fully and calmly as the oveuiug suu passes
behind the western sky.
Sho was born on tho 14th July, 1809,
and was a few days ovor 62 years of age
at tho time of her death. She was a wo
man of much enor^y of character aud of
groat UHofulnoHH to tier family and to soci
ety. Hut she is gono ! Our hopes, our
wishes, all tho love we boro her could uot
stay tho hand of death. Sho has gono to
a bettor, brighter land, where we may go
to her, but from which wo would not have
her return to us in this so full of trouble
and disappointment.
She lived 25 years of hor life in Har
bour aud Macon countios, Ala., where
she has many friends aud family relations
to mouru her loss. +.
bliai Smytlie, the entire machinery of tho
Cjlniubus Steam Cotton Mills was sold ut
public outcry at tho court house yesterday
withiu the legal hours of sale. Dr. N. J.
Bussey, President of tho Eagle A Fhouix
Factory, was tho purchaser ut $12,100.—
Tho ongiuo aud building wero not sold.
Tbo purchaser incurs tho risk of mort
gages. It will bo reinemberod that this
machinery was employed during tho first
fow years aftor the war in tho ananufac-
turo of thread, yarns, rope, Ac., under
tho superintcudanco of Mr. D. Keith. It
has remained idlo for sorno time. We
suppose it is tho intentiou of the Eagle A
Phenix Company to add this to their al-
r«*dy extensive stock of cotton machin
