Hoa Stealing—Heroic Yocnu Lad*.—
We hear that some thieves paid a visit to
the residence of an old gentleman, living
three or four miles from the city, in Ala
bama, a few nights ego, and committed
several bold antics, among them attempt
ing to fores the door of 1 room occupied
by a young lady, who was at ths place on
a visit. She waked up the old gentleaun
and bagged him far a gun to shoot tbe
invaders with, but* he, fearing the const*
qaeoeee, refused her request. Tbe thieves
shortly afterward retired, carrying of four
of the finest, largest hogs on the place.
r.MriitK Oil Mills.—We have hereto-
fore frequently culled attention to thimo
mills, recently established at the upper
end of Oglethorpe street, iu this city,
under the superintendence of Mr. J. W.
Smith, a thorough and accomplished me-
liauiu ; and now that the Works are fairly
under headway, and have an advertise
ment in our columns, wo take pleasure in
referring to them again. These mills are
peeially adapted to utili/.iug cotton seed
au item that lias perhaps been more
generally was ted at tho South than any
thing else. By tho aid of hullers, which
aro made at thoHO Works, the sued are
divided iuto throe important properties -
the external, containing fertilizing pro
perties; the oil, fur all kinds of lubrica
ting purposes ; and tho com pressed ker
nels, for stock feed. At the Works a
mammoth holler is now running, capable
of hulling 1200 bushels pur day, from
w liieli Hi barrels of oil can be compressed.
The principal object of this new Compuny
is to introduce these hullers throughout
tho South, the prices of them raugiug
from $100 to $500. Besides hulling the
cotton seed the mill grinds excellent meal
uud hominy, which of itself is a consid
eration that ought to iusure their uuiver-
sal introduction. These hullers or mills
are exchanged for the dean kernels of the
lottou seed at fair valuations, so that oven
those who may uot have much roudy
money can easily arrange to pay for a
Imller. We recotnnieud the planters of
this section, when coming to Columbus,
to visit the Oil Mills uud coufer with Mr.
Smith, that they may not ouly be enabled
to see the mills in operation, but learu
more particularly their power, uses, eapu-
ity, Ac. If we are not vastly mistaken
this enterprise will add greatly to the
economy of farm work, and enable the
planter to derive from his seed a hand
some profit. Bead the advertisement
carefully.
