Tho map of the United Hint oh shows but

way of tho Mississippi and the Gulf of
Mexico. There are seriouN objeotiouN to
h« th of these. The terminus of each ia
Imyoud our borders, and consequently be
youd our coutrol. Tho Bt. Lawronoe
route is very long, and is frozen up for
six months of the year, thus com pressing
the work of twelve mouths in to six, aud
of course addiug fifty por cent, to the
cost of traunportion. Besidoa this, overy

and dangerous passage around the Florida
capes. The shipper must pay for instance
$2 50 for every #100 worth of merchan
dise. Tbe Bureau of Btstistica estimate
that 25 per ceut. of all the grain shipped
over this route is eutirely lost by touring
and beating.
The proposed Atlantio and Great West

In the first place, the cost of construction,
