Hence the remarkable unanimity with
which they support Greeley—aa agaiuat
Grant. Thia aupport, ao qualified, ia no
general, that we can hardly name a oou-
aervative paper or politician of note in
all that auction that doea nut iudorae the

well they may, that that ratiAcatiou would

tho great majority, while uurcaervadly
giving their preleieni'e for Greulay over
Graut, express a williugnt H* to abide hy

Unleaa something now unexpected turna
up to change tho wholo aspect of the cam

many frienda among the delegates at Bel*
11more, and no iuconaidarable effort will
be made to nominate him there, or to in
fluence the convention into taking the
other tack aud making no noiuinationa.
The Tennessee State Convention favora
the latter policy. Greeley haa been gain
ing strength every day ainoe he hooaiue a
candidate; and that man in raali who
would predict the course of tho conven
tion ou July !l. We .baae theao opinions
aud views ou the prodigious advantage

true exponents of amnaety to the South
in ita broadest sense. Graut and hia
fiieuda may tie ready to throw overboard
all other causes of disagreement, but they
are too far committed agaiuat unqualifled
amnesty to ohauge ground now; and even
should thev promise lo doao, they are too
late, aud they would uot be believed aud
trusted. Iu the aeuate ou Thursdav, Mr.
Logan aaid that (t the measure which it
was neoeaaary for tho Hepublioan party
to past now iu order to couuteraot the
Cincinnati movement was amnesty."
This ia a frank confession, though the
motive alleged is uot of the highest.
Amnesty should have been declared long
ago, uoi to head off Liberal Republicans,
but to do dimple justice to the South.
Had the administration aud Congress bean
honest and geuerous ou that point, when
we recommended them to be, they would
not uow be contriving such desperate ex
pedients to beat Greeley. We have aaid
enough to ahow, which ia all we alerted
out to do, that amuesty ia the backbone
of the CtBciunati movement—the secret
of its growing popularity among conserv
atives, north, weat and south. Whatever
prospect of auooeaa belongs to that move*
■sent we attribute to amnesty and tba
identification of the Cincinnati candidates
with that great measure. No other reason
could induoe conservatives to aooept for
Fresideut n man of Greeley’s peculiar and
marked fuulta of character, with a reoord
dotted with ao many ecoentrieitiae and
