The returns of the 1st* election in WcHt
Virginia show that the Democratic pat ty
of that State, supportiug Greeley and
Itrowii, voted against nn amendment of
the Constitution which would have de
prived negroes of the right to hold office.
File auioudmcut was submitted to the
popular voto in compliance with a de
mand by sn extreme wing (hu<1 a small
oue) of the party, but tho great mass «>f
tho Democrats and Conservatives of tho
State voted against it. This fact ought to
be sufficient to silence the slanders of the
designing Medical politicians who are
telling tho negroes of tho South that in
the event of the eleoliou of Greeley Arid
Drown all their politioal rights will bo
taken from them. In West Virginia tbe
negroea couatitutea much leas proportion

even their small minority thcro was se
cured iu the continuance of this right by
tho votes of Democrats. In mime of the
Uadioal States of tho North negroes

educational qualification.
We do not wish to be understood ns
