before the war
But, Mr. Editor, tho most of the mem
bers are young, and have had but abort
experionco in icgialation; yet some few
have held their souts steadily along for ten
years. Among that claaa I waa proud to
see the able, gallant and honest member
from Effingham. Col. Morgan Bawls, who
is acknowledged by all to be amongst tho
ablest and best parliamentarism! in the
legislature. He is in tho legislature
what ho was in the Army, an officer ulways
on duty, and never loaves his poat. 1
could not help marking in contrast the
calm, expressive, intellectual face, bearing
npon it all of tho marks of character and
statesmanship, and then recalling to ro-
collection the samo figure and counte
nance in tho command of the 54th Geor
gia Regiment in tho campaign of North
Georgia, of tho Army of Teuneaseo. I
novor shall forgot tho heroism and patri
otism ovineed by this officer in that mem-
orahlo catupaigu, who was indood a hero
of a hundred hard-bought battlos, and no
doubt many of your readers in this sec
tion of Georgia, who were with rne in the
saiuo regiment and brigade, will bear me
up in saying that no braver or rnoro eifi-
cicnt officer, nor a more houorablo or
better man, ever comuiauded men than
this self-same Bawls. How well I remem
ber tho memorable 22d day of July, 1804,
when Hardee's Corps made the first terri-
blo assault and battle upon the enomy's
works, and the bloody tragedy that fol-
lowed. It was lato in tho ovening when
Gen. Lowry, of ('loburue's Division, after
our immediate bravo and lamented divi
sion commander, Geu. W. II. T. Walker,
was killed at the head of his column of
gallant men, that Gen. Lowry, in a short
speech to Mercor s Brigade, commanded
by Bawls, unci to hia own Tennessee Bri
gade, gave tho order of battle to our line,
aud pointing to the enemy's interminable
lino of works, and turning to Bawls, com
tnamled him to capture thorn. No sooner
thuu tho ordor was given, Bawls, mounted
upon his own stoed, in full uniform, with
aword drown, in udvsiico of the oolumn,
gave the comumud to chargo. Tho line
moved oft' at double quick, with shouts
and yells, which endod in a shout of vic
tory. The strong works, under tho oom-
tuund of Bawls wore taken, and with the
fall of the works 000 Yankee prisoners
surrendered to our victorious brigades.
But uot without a price! No, Mr. Editor,
tho victory was complete, and besides the
prisoners wo cupturod, hundreds of the
enemy wore loft doad aud wounded in our
front ; hut it was tho last vintorioiis
charge wo made during the war. Our
iiumbors wore reduced in killed and
wouiulod fully one-hiilf ; a large propor
tion wero killed. Tho writor'a own com
pany guarded tlio colors in the battle,
around which tou of his own men fought
thoir last tight —besides as many more
were wouiulod. Tho same proportion of
casualties woro in other rogiments. Our
gallant Mujor, W. II. Maun, was shot desd
at the enemy's works, A fow paces from
him, olfise to tin* colors, in tha midst of
tho very hoot and din of the battle, tho
gallant Bawls gave his last order to IiIh
men during tho fight, and fell a victim to
a Minic bull, which piereod him through
the neck—a wound that came' well nigh
coating him his lifo. When the battle
was ovor, those of us who wero more for-
tuuate than the rout, after burying our
doad, assembled together, and as beet we
could, re-formod what was loft of our
regiment; but thuu there waa one mad
missing. We felt, os 1 bavo often seen a
tlock of geese act, without a loador. But
our gallant pickot was off duty forever
1 see in your paper, Mr. Editor, aa well
oa in almost every other paper in Georgia,
eome uow man s name mentioned for
Congress. Allow ano through your ool-
nrnna to suggest to the voters of the First
Congressional District the uame of Mor-
gan Bawls aa a suitable, able, conserva
tive, faithful person for the nomination
for Cougresa. Although opposed to se
cession, after Goorgia spoke in her con
vention, liko a dutiful sou, ho entered hor
service ; and it can bo truly said of him,
that with the exooption of a short period
of service on Morris' Island, South Caro
lina, ho never drew bis sword save in the
defenoe of bis own State. It is not my
objeot to praise whore praise is not mer
ited ; but, in my opinion, were all the
noble traits of this man known to every
Georgian aa tboy are known to thoso of
us who have had opportunities to know
him best, I would bo safe iu saying that
human language would go unwritten, and
the proud old pillars of Georgia's consti
tution would moulder in the duat, before
the name, fame and deeds of Bawls would
be forgotten or unappreciated by any true
Georgian. Bo it ia confidently hoped by
the writer, who has penued these lines
without the knowledge of Ool. Bawls, that
the newspapers of Bavannah will hoist his
name at the head of their columns, aa he
waa hoisted iu hattio at the head of ool-
umna of men, and reward merit by man
hood suffrage. • • •

of our section. Ho gave his experience 1
in raising Irish potatoes, and in grape 1
growing ; front which he arguod that, liy >
a proper diversity of labor, there need he
no alarm in referoneo to a failure to make
our section self-supporting. Wn had the
host bolt of country iu tho world, the
hardiest and most intelligent population,
the most equable climate, and the groatnst
diversity of soil. But it was against the
laws of God and natura to expect or
attempt to henomo prosperous by growing
cotton, to the neglect of tho cereals and
stork raising. The practice of buying
fertilizers to umko cotton, with which to
bny corn and meat, waa preposterous and
would ruin any section. Tho true thoury,
ho said, was to “nmko your homes and

He closed his remarks with this clincher :
Upon his books there were at least three
thoiyuuid names, and among all thoso
uaiiies, without a single exception, not
one of the men who had madly puraue*!
cottou hud mado money aince the war.
Nearly all of them were iu debt, and many
hopolossly so. While, on the other hand,
those who had raised their own supplies
had iuvnriably saved money.
In tho course of his remarks Muj. Allen
made a sensible allusion to manufactures,
the gist of which was that if the uiouey
invested in corn and bacon, were appliod
to the building uf factories, in twenty
years the trading area of Columbus would
become the richest portion of the South.
After Maj. Allen concluded, Mr. J. C.

Cobb, Stone, and other neighboring far
mers. It was prepared under the super
intendence of Tbomee Gammell, and
with the exception of being a little 'rare,
waa served up in oxoellent style. It was
much rarer when the crowd got through
eating than when they commenced.
Whi'e there, we uoticed eome excellent
corn and cotton on the premises of Mr.
E. Sims Bauks* but regretted to notice
that caterpillars wore commencing their
ravages upon his finest young cotton.—
On the premises of Mr. Leunsrd, we saw
an uuusually promising crop of potatoes.
We return thanks to Mr. Lennard and
his overseer, Thomason, for conveyance
to and from the barbecue.
The Icb-Makino Machine Steamed Up.
The machinery of the Columbus Ioe Man-
ufseturing Company waa steamed up for
the first time yeeterdsy, and was found to
work to the satisfaction of ita projectors.
Water was pumped from the river and
well in a satisfactory manner, giving as
surance that there will be no difficulty in
securing a sufficiency of water. If Mr.
Muhl arrives this week, aa it ia expected
he will, the Company will commence the
manufacture of ice next week.
From Capt. John C. Brain, who has
labored eo assiduously for the peat nine
months to inaugurate this enterprise, we
learn that the total cost of the machinery,
building, motive power, Ac., will amount
to about f14,000. The full oapacity of
the machine will be 12,600 pounds of ioe
every twenty-four bourn. A Carey am
monia maohina, of equal oapacity, would
have coet #20,000.
It is the intention of the Company, we
understand, to make ioe all winter, in
order to secure a good supply by the next
