OVouor and John Quincy Adams might
nave the Deputdie. OVouor has refused
to bo our standard bearer. History must
pass on Ids reasons. Wo believe him to
bo a citizen eminently puiu, devoted to
republican government ns contemplated
by Jeffemull and by Jaeksou, and without
ostentation when heroism wus required in
tho nsserlioii of principles. With pro.
found regret wo lmvo heard cpilliutn ap
plied to him by members uf this Conven
tion ninro bis absolute declination baa
been made known, which could only bo
applied to thu basest of men. Hypocrisy
and cowardice were nttiibutcd to him.
Wo believed that the liu.t hope uf tho ltc-
puhlio rested with this Convention. To
uh it i; a mutter of utter indifference
whether Grant or Groelcy Mioccods. With
ead baorta wo ferosco the death of Demo-
cratio piinoipluH and republican govern
incut. Let us pray to God that the im
pending revolution nuy lie without blood.
Wo cam.* here in a spirit uf fraternity,

doiiunciatiotiK of OVouor wero uttered,
had not, iu our opinion, exhausted all be
