Neoro Thief Shot Down on St. Clair
Street.—Thero wp.m coneidoruble excite-
umut, especially among nogroe*, in this
city, about 10 o'clock yesterday, caused
by tlio shooting down on St. Clair Rtrcet,
Hoar tho residence of it. M. Gunby, of a
negro named Jurdau Webb, by policeman
Wm. Gauh. The negro wan shot in the
back while running, tho ball passing cou-
trally through, nud killing hiui iu some
five or ten minutes. The circumstances
which gave rise to tho killiug arc us fol
lows : On Sunday night last a white man,
named Alfred Kimbrough, wns knocked
down in Girard by sumo unknowu person
or persons and robbed of a watch and a
small amount of money. Yesterday tho
above named negro carried to Mr. Gu-
towski a silver watch to he repaired. Mr.
G. recognized it an the watch stolen from
Kimbrough, nud went to tho door to call
a policemau to urrest the thief. The ne-
gio seeing that all was not right took to
his heels and rati down Broad to St. Clair
street, turning the corner and making in
tho direction of tho Fontaine warehouse.
Ho was pursued bv policeman Cash, who
shot him down ns above described.
Tho negro’s body was taken to Court
House Ft|uare, where Coroner Wood
Rnmmomd a jury and held an inquest,
tho following gentlemen serving iu tho
capacity of jurors : Milo lloolior, W. O.
Borders, John A. Johnson, A. Sips, E. W
Poubody and E. \V. Howell. This jury
returned as a verdict that deceased came
to liis death from a pistol tired by the
hand of Wm. Cash. Tho negro was taken
to Alabama for burial.
From what wo can learn tho negro was
a nolid thief, he r.t tho time of his death
being under indictment before tho Cir
cuit Court of Bussell county as u cotton
thief.
Cash was immediately arrested by or
der of Jiintice Coleman. Tho result of

daily arrested and brutally treated with

permission, utating that, in liis opinion,

noon on tho Montgomery and Luf uda
Railroad, wo loaisi that a Mr. John il.
Iiuff, of Ozark, Dale county, Ala., was
killed by tho out-going train from Uniou
SpringR, on tho Mobile and Girard Rail
road, Thursday night last, about 2 o’clock.
Ho had boon to Montgomery during tho
day, and had taken tho train at Union
Springs bound for Troy, and when tho
train hail gotten not more than fifty or
one hamlrod paacu from tho hotel tho ac
cident occurred, as the body wm found
within that diatance of the hotel yester
day morning by parties on tho eastern
Imund train from Troy. It is thought
that toon aftor deceased got on the train
tho night boforo, ho attempted to poM
