Editor Enquirer: I wm pi***"®*! ro *
ccntly in reading sovcraJ article* in one
of your city pa|>erH upon the advantages
of manufacturing and Iho s)>ccial (1Iih#h
of Columbus a* « manufacturing centre.
This subject haring l»ecn ono which has
much interested mo, and led to occasional
examination, I |m»|K»He, if agreeable t
you, to furnish further details of the ad
vantages of iiiaiiufaeturiiig to coniiiiuui-
tiea, examined into during loiHuro mo
ment* of my country’ life. The staple
crop of Georgia being cotton, its manipu
lation within the Htato would load to im-
niMiMo advantages, not only in the en
hanced value tluiH given to it, but to co
ordinate benefits in building up the nu
merous other industries which enter into
the pre|>aratioii of the many materials re
quired in its manufacture, such an iron,
leather, starch, oil, and various other
articles unnecessary to enumerate, thus
adding largely to the population proper
engaged in manufacturing cotton. Thin
wo see verified At all manufacturing cen
tres, as Manchester, Eugland, Lowell,
Fall River and other similar jHiitits in this
country, in their bleacheriew, dying ostab-
lishmentK, machine shops, tanneries, Ac.,
growing up with the demands of their
numerous cotton and woolen mills. To
illustrate enhancement growing out of the
manufacture of cotton gins!*: England in
1807 consumed '.Ml,.117,000 lbs of cotton,
costing in gold $1118,0.17,000, which was
increased in value by munipulation to
!f11H,,%III,MOO- excess over (Mmt being
$220,4.111,21Hl, gold, and in the ratio of
|00(&<‘J12. To accomplish this our Houtli-
ern Static contributed 1,210,202 bales.
During the Hiime season the cotton manu
factured North was 0.13,:i07 bales, which
calciiluted at 411 lbs the bale cost $00,.
200,702, and in the Name ratio of increased
value, gave manufactured $120,13'.),404,
osechH over cost $M»,27«, 702—exceeding
the value of the entire Georgia crop of
lwiS, viz $.11,208,070, estimating bales at
ttt lbs. Aye, and even MnHHnchuHrltN,
“the least fruitful of all the New England
Whites, and with one half of its urea un
cultivated," makes up its natural deficien
cies upon our prisluctiotiN, having in 1800,
with its |. r *0 mills (cotton), brought ita
cotton up to if 72,1127,AM, similarly calcu
lated, with value exceeding coat by If Ml,,
tin 1,227*. How completely all thia proves
the fallacy that cotton jter nc ia King as
regards the Houth, although placed by it
in slavish attitude, ns “hewers of wood
and drawnra of water" to tlioso who have
truly inaugurated its Kingship in its uliii
Ration and with the spindle us its aceptrc.
How aad, with such facts before us to in.
cite to effort, that we, with all the advan
tages of soil, production an.I climate so
lavishly bestow ed upon us who occupy the
cotton area, should thrust aside what
seem to be the designs of Providence in
the aggregation within our limits of all
means to aecompliHli ends, material of
every description, with iiuturul power to
work it up.
Delving, delving, year after year, lias
been the groove in which wc have lioen
running, to afford Die thrifty, enterprising
Northerner the pabulum with which to
feed his yearly growing coffers, while the
hard earnings of each year here are ap
plied'by the planter or fanner to pay fur
supplies advanced at cnoniionn profits to
rover riskH, and probably 2$G'M |ior cent,
a month for indulgence!!! exceeding ma
turity of bills, the large |Kirtiou of tlieHe
proceeds going out of the Htate to differ
ent North western supply pointH, to the
utter prostration of all iudtiNtrial enter
prises by which the South might lie re
rituted, and which would ufford direel
profits to individual investments and gen
eral benefit in the enhancement of nil
values to result from thiH different system.
Let us look at some of the advantag*
to be assuredly derived from aticli a sys
tem, and to illiistmto wo will again toko
up “the least fruitful of all tho New Eng
laud Htales." Massachusetts was running,
1U J8t*!t, 2,380,002 spindles, largely in
croased aiuee. Tlio highest average I can
find at mills of Lowell and Fall Kiv
seventy-five spindles to tho hand, from
which we find that their cotton spinning
employed M. r *,:*ii hands; and adding to
this number one-third for non operativci
of famillea 1I,8M8, and wo fiud that tins
distinct industry of itself makes up u
population of 47,352 souls. Hut, ns al
ready stated, there are many other iudtiH'
trioa which spring up iuoideut to cot
ton manufacturing, which would add very
largely to this population of 47,862, sniff
oient iu itself to oonatituto a city. This
we find accomplished iu latUudee of ex
treme rigor, the whole country
oovered with granite bouldem, which of
themselves would souui to defy man's iu-
tlustry and create wonder from whit
sources the donso population of the ooiui-
try derives Hiip|Kirt, until the whir of the
spindle, the heavy breathing of a steam
engine or tho clatter **f a wator wheel ox
plains tho mystery ; man’s energy, genius
aud enterprise there truly exemplifying
the fable, that they who help themselves
the gods favor. What preveuts our avid!
ment of the numerous advantages of our
naturally more favored laud now lying
waste at our doors. Wo have boasted su
perior intellect ovor the North, as evinced
iu our national councils anterior to the
war. Then all was comparatively proa
perous, and as a class those representing
the people of tho South had more leisure
for mental culture under the thoa pecu
liar nature of our institutions, aud theu
to stand out conspicuously required Uo
severe moral or intellectual trial; but
How, prostrated by tho war, ia the occa
sion for real exhibition of character aud
purpose iu re-establishing Southern pros
perity, aud thus proving that our boasted
capabilities which could float auooeesfully
with the tide of prosperity can also steer
successfully that of adversity. With sta
tistics given, the least reflecting mind can
appreciate tho ml vantages we havo over
Northern manufacturers—unlimited wa
ter power, more than sufficient to work
up the eutiro crop; a climate admirably
adapted to cotton manufacturing (in fact
all others) in ita sufllcieut humidity, free
dom from interruptions through cold,
with the consequent economy of fuel,
heating buildings hero extending to ns
*»Auy weeks as at tho North it extends to
months; the economy of lights in the
gain of one day of daylight monthly ; la
bor MO per oent. cheaper, according to
carefully oollated statistics; cotton at our
doom, quoted in to-day . paper., Septem
ber 10th, 1872, 17jc. for Btriet Middlings
in Columbus, 21 Jc. iu Bostuu, 20jc. iu
New York, 20jc. in Philadelphia, 20| o .
in Baltimore.—a difference of to. p. r
pound in the two first mentioned places,
without considering coot of transporta
tion, of tare, the commissions paid by
Lowell or Fall Bluer manufacturers, or
the wastage from sampling and stealage,
and from exposure to weather and mod,
with other shrinkages of value before
iweehiog the pioker room, which might
rwWw«|lwr wet, » {&*** tfir*
cents, or $2.1 a bale of five hundred
pounds, in favor of the hsiy^tnanufactnr-
erat Columbus. In a Mhticsl roport
of Ix)we 11 manufactures, for 1871, the
weekly consumption of cotton is stated to
be 012,000, which, at price quotations of
to-day, wonld cost leas by 1*24,480 hero
than thore.
With such a margin, figures which all
can read proving it, uought but gross mis-
management aan prevent the Houthoni
manufacturer from coin|>eti»g successful
ly with Northern mills and underselling
them nt all points, while realizing hand
some profits. Kumtiouh.
'i'ur. Grokoia Lunatic Asylum.*—From
a riMieut visit to this institution wo were
pleased to hoc it in Much a prosperous
condition, under the able management of
Dr. Greene, who, if he is not the founder
of it, has done more than sll else besides
to bring it up to its present state of per
fection. Hu has bad charge of the insti
tution for twenty-sevon years, and has
during that timo labored unceasingly for
its welfare. He is a high-toned Christian
gentleman, and his whole study seems to
be the welfare of his unfortunate pa
tients, and all of his assistants appear to
be imbued with tho same spirit. Under
the Doctor's management, the law of
kimlueHH is the law of the institution, und
we understand that it works admirably.
W« were struck with tho extreme neat
ness of every apartment, slid were sur
prised Diet Hiioh cleiinliiiOMH could be at
tainablo in such uu institution until we
were shown the sanitary arrangements
that had been made. Thu building, as is
well known, is an iuuuoiiNn one, and Iiun
recent I}’ been added to, nrul tho untire
buildiug, besides being well ventilated by
Urge airy windows, bos a constant stream
of fresh air forced into every apartment
l>y nieaiiH of a Urge fun in the yard,
worked by steam. The water arrange
ment is also admirable, as every story
could lie iiistsully flooded iu case of fire,
besides Iming used in every conceivable
way for the cleanliness of the piilionls.
In fact, every precaution Dial could bo
taken seems to have been done for the
health and comfort of the inmates.
The new additions that have just been
completed enables tho iiiauageis to re-
ceivu all applicants of that unfortunate
class, and nono are now refusud admit
tance for want of room. Those additions
will nnuhln them to roroivn about one
hundred nud sixty more patients.
This iiiHtilutiou is an honor to Dr.
Greene ns well ns to the Htato.
Wo nro under many obligations to Dr.
G. nml Ins la«ly, and to Col. Fleming G.
Grieve, Din Secretary of the Asylum, for
kind attentions.
JtoAl» Inhi-WTIon.- Trustees Estes and
Hood, with several invited giiestN, went
to the terminus of Dio North and Mouth
Railroad Inst afternoon, for Die purpose
of inspecting nml rc|N>rting upon the last
five miloH just finished. The trains now
rim to Thompsons, on the Hamilton road
sonin fiftoeu miles from Columbus, ami to
within about eight miles of lluuultoii.
The first ten miles we found ill oxrollont
running order. Tho road bed ou the last
five miles, of course, neinls some leveling
to put it in good trim. Tho work thus
for ueeouiplislied rctlucts tho utmost cred
it upon Maj. Wilkins nml his construc
tion squad, ah well as upon the Compuny.
Work is progressing rapidly, and tho road
will roach tho Mulberry, nosr Hamilton,
in about throo weeks. Tho iuHpectiou
train returned to the city about hovou
o'clock.
Chain Gano Ehtaulihiikd.- Special
Commissioners, Fetor Freer, W. G. Wool
folk nml L. F. Garrard, appointed by lati
act of tho legislature to look After criiu
iual and other affairs of tho county, held
n meeting yoHterday afternoon, at which
it was determined to establish ii chain
gang immediately for tho puuiHhinont of
|*otly offenders of this county. This will
probably put an oud to such heavy jail
cxpotiMUN, aud go far towards preventing
crime. Thu number of prisoners con
victed at the Into term of tho Couuty
Court will, we presume, he sentenced to
work on this gang. They will ho tendor-
od to tho city, provided the city will feed
them for thuir services; if not, an over
seer will ho employed to use them
public works of the county.

from Chnlyhonto Spring's.
Messrs. M. J. Wellborn, Feter Freer
and W. 11. Gray represented the Columbus
Baptist Church.
The ehurohes within tlio bounds of the
Association were represented, with two
or three oxoeptions.
Large numbers of persons from regions
round about were present on Saturday
and Sunday the at tendance of the hitter
day being estimated at near tweuty-tlve
hundred persons.
>. L. Itoss, of Fort Yslley, preach

at 2 p. iu. SiiiuUy. An excellent state of
religious feeling prevailed, ami many
were up for prayers.
By the usual reports it was ascertained
that tho iucreaae of tho denomination
within the hounds of the Assooiatiou had
heeu marked during the paid year by a
very gratifying growth.
One of the moat important acts of the
Association was the appointment of liov.
Mr. Figh as missionary to labor iu desti
tute portions of the State.
Our delegates reached home on Tues
day night. They represent the hospital
ity and kiuduosa of the brethren and oiti-
