HINTS FOR LADIES.
Turnip Pie.—Take a turnip and pare and
boil it, add a teaspoonful of tartaric acid and
a cup of sugar, season and bake as an apple
pie.
Rice Cake.—Wash one pound of rice, put
it in a stew-pan with a pint of water, and set
it on the fire; when the rice is well soaked,
add a quart of milk, a quarter of a pound of
butter, grated lemon peel, or a little nutmeg,
or a piece of cinnamon; boil till thick; then
add two eggs, well beat, a little saljy. anil a
quarter of a pound of sugar'; place all In a
greased pan or tin bread-pan; bake one hour,
and serve with sugar, or.jam over.
The Same, a Cheaper Wav,—Add to one
pound of rice, when boiled, two ounces of
chopped suet, a spoonfttl of flour, 'a qnart' of
skim-milk, some”brown sugar or molasses;
bake in large pan; eat cold; fruit of any
kind may be mixed with it.
Tho man of mediocre education and posi
tion is, generally, the most particular about
the education and accomplishments of his
wife. A man of literary habits often seeks
little more than sense and affection.
To Remove a “Sty” from the Eyelid.—
The sty is strictly only a little boil, which
projects from the edge of the eyelid. It is of
a dark red color, much inflamed, and occa
sionally a great deal more painful than might
be expected, considering its small size. It
usually disappears of itself after a little time,
especially if some purgative medicine be
taken. If the sty should be very painful and
inflamed, a small warm poultice of linseed
meal or bread and milk must be laid over it,
and renewed every five or six hours, and the
bowels freely acted upon by a purgative
draught, such as the following: Take of Ep
som salts, half an ounce; best manna, two
drachma; infusion of senna, six drachms;
tincture of senna, two drachms; spear
mint water,' one ounce; distilled water,'two
ounces. Mix, and take three, four or live
table-spoonfuls. When the sty appears nj>e,
an opening should be made into it with the
point of a large needle, and afterwards a lit
tle of the following ointment may be smeared
over it once or twice a" day. Ointment: Take
of spermaceti, six drachms; white wax, ten
drachms; olive oil, three ounces. Mix them
together over a slow fire, and stir them con
stantly until they are cold.
Piccalilli.—Piccalilli is a mixture of all
kinds of pickles. Select pickles from the
salt brine, of a uniform size and of various
colors, as small cucumbers, button onions,
small bunches of cauliflowers, carrots cut in
fanciful shapes, radishes, radish pods, bean
pods, Cayenne pods, mace, ginger, olives,
limes, grapes, strips of horse radish, &c.—
Arrange your selection tastefully in glass jars,
nnd pour over them a liquor prepared in the
following manner: To one gallon of white
wine vinegar, add eight table-spoonfuls of
salt, eight of mustard flour, four of ground
ginger, two of pepper, two of allspice, two
of turmeric; and boil all together one min
ute. The mustard and turmeric must be
mixed together by vinegar, before they are
put into the liquor; when the liquor has
boiled, pour it into a pan, cover it closely and,
when it lias become cold, pour it into the
jars containing the pickles. Cover the jars
with cork and bladder and let them stand
six months, when they will contain good
pickles. H .. '
Tight Lacing.—The custom of confining
the body in tight stays, or tight , clothes of
any kind, is exceedingly hurtful to the health
of both body and mind. A girl has learned
a very bad lesson when she lias been taught
that to gain admiration, she must, even, to
the endangering' of health and life, distort
her figure from that which nature has made,
to something which fashion presumes to dic
tate as mor* admirable. The custom of pre
venting the active use of the limbs, and free
exercise of the body generally, and restrict-
ingevery movement to the artificial notions
of (boarding house propriety, is attended with
nir-tif al and physical evils of all sorts. While
a child is forbidden to take the bodily exer
cise which nature would impel her to do, the
humors grow thick, and stagnate for want of
motion to warm and dilate them; the gener
al circulation is impeded; the muscles stiffen
because deprived of tlieir necessary moisture;
obstructions take place,.which prqduceweak-
ness in. every animal function; aha nature, no
longer table to discharge the morbid matter
Which constantly accumulates from all her
imperfect operations, gradually silecumW
To Fasten on the Handles of Knives
and Forks.—The handles of knit cs aiu I fork:

may be fastened in the following manner
Procure some powdered rosin and mix with
it a small qunntity of clialk, whiting, or quick
lime; let the handles beabout half filled with
this mixture, best the ends of the knives or

On the Oth of Octnher, 1867, Queen Victo
ria will retire, and the Prince of Woles be
made Prince Regent. ■
In 18G9 and ’70 Austria will seize Greece
and some minor German States,,and Russia
will seize on Turkey.
On the 27tli of October, 1871, Russia and
Austria will combineio make war on France;
and on the same day, perhaps, Napoleon will
sign a covenant with the Jews.
On the 3d of June, 1872, the Emperor of
Russia will he killed in Palestine, on the field
of battle, and Napoleon will become supreme-
monarch, all the kingdoms of the old Roman
earth falling to him. Britain excepted.
On the 10th of March, 1875, the Jews will
be restored to Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
On the 9th of April, 1875, Anti-Christ (who
is explained as Napoleon III) will appear and
be fully revealed. , , ’n,‘‘L T.. ’ ‘‘'l 1
About the 1st of September, 1376, the sign
of the Son of Man will appear in the heav
ens; and at sunset, as wc have said, on flu-
20th of September, 1 878, Christ will be seen
descending on Mount 01 it/*. ■u ; -. ., ,.
Captain Baker professes to have discovered

in quick succession after the power of Napo
