Another Importation.—We ol(served that
those enterprising dealers, Messrs.. S- Peyser
& Co., received auothcr large stock of goods yes
terday. The motto of these gentlemen appears to
lie “a nimble sixpence is better iliau a slow shil
ling,” and they are coudncting their business on
that principle. We advise our lady ready readers
to have tlieir port tnonic* well lined when they visit
this establishment, for the attractions arc great,
tf
2-M~ Although we have had hnt one or two morn
iugs cold enough to render a lire necessary for
comfort, we have heard complaints of woodpiles
beginning to grow unaccountably “smaller by de
grees.” It would seem from this that the thieves
have commenced quite early in the season to pre
pare themselves for keeping warm; and if our
prophesy should prove true, this feature in the
stealing business will be felt by all who tail to uss
sufficient precaution to prevent its being practised
upon them. This wood stealing business is carried
on to a greater or less extent in onr city every win
ter; and since the thieves have had such wide
fields for operating in here lately, and have “got
their hands in,” it is reasonable to suppose that,
unless steps are taken to prevent it, the transac
tions in this liue the coming winter will surpass
any that we have heretofore experienced. If the
thieves are able to find our wood pile they are at
liberty to help themselves.
Keep Warm.—S. Peyser & Co. arejnow offering
a large lot of tine bed blankets, white and colored,

Pistol PnESEHTATion.-Last evening about eight
. o’clock, quite acrowdcollected in thcparlorof the
Lftticr House, to witness the presentation of the
“lamous pistol” of Capt. Travis to Col. R. Z. Daw
son, post commandant. Col. C. C. Henderson late
of the Confederate army in behalf of Capt. Travis,
and citizens of Macon, presented the pistol with a
neat and appropriate address. Col. Dawson re
sponded gracefully. He complimented the soldiers
of Georgia, for their bravery, illustrated on many
hfoody fields. He lioped that aunivcrsnl feeling of
brotherhood would Tie henceforth cherished. His
remarks throughout were received with enthusiasm
and applause.
It is certain that Col. Dawson, by his gentle
manly and kind. deportment towards the citizens
ot Jlfacon, possesses their respect and esteem.—
The “famous pistol," almost, as eeiebrated as its
former owuer, will lie appreciated by the Colonel,
not only on account of its intrinsic value, but as a
tribute of respect, from citizcus, who appreciate
his efforts to givegenerai satisfaction, and to main
tain law and order in onr midst.
Pali, and Winter Clothing.—S. Peyser & Co.
have just received a large assortment. tf
All That’s BuionT Must Fade,—Is not appli
cable to a fine set of teeth brushed with Fragrant
Siizodonf. Its protective, preservntivrrand beanti-
fj ing properties will preserve the whiteness, sound
ness and natural polish of good teeth throughout
life. And when unsound, it will arrest decay, and
remove from the breath the taiut which decompo
sition generates. octl-8t.
IST See notice, elsewhere, of proposition to
wood merchants.
Be Cautious.—Above all things, drunken men
should beware of cellaT doors, especially when
they are left. open. We snw one rather heavily
loaded with spirits yesterday, staggering about on
the streets, as he said, “tiying to muster up the
city police,” shouting to persons whom he imag
ined of that body,-to “fall in,” when he lost his
balance and fell backwards into an open cellar
door. We do not think he was badly injured; but
we noticed that after “falling in” himself, we did
not hear him call upon anybody else to do so.
Another Want Supplied.—Another desidera
tum lacking to complete the condition of our mar
ket has been supplied by Messrs. Singleton, Hunt
& Co., who have established a wholesale hoot and
shoe store opposite the Lanier House, Mulberry
street. Every body can now have their wants in
this line supplied. They also deal extensively in
hats, trunks and umbrellas. Read their advertise
ment and give them a call.

SPECIAL NOTICES.
J. H. ZEILIN&CO.,
Ancient Masonic Memorials.—While
digging in various parts of England, for the
purpose of securing foundations for new edi
fices, many ancient memorials have from time
to time, lieen brought to light, which seem
to afford some evidence of the antiquity of
Masonry, inasmuch as they have been of a
character known and understood as'apper
taining to that ancient craft, and cannot be
properly appropriated by others than opera
tive Masons. They are, at least, of interest.
Jan. 17, 1712, in a plowed field in the par
ish of Stunsford, near Woodsford, Oxford
shire, was found an entire tesselated pave
ment of tliirty-fiye feet in length, and twenty
in breadth, formed of little square stones of
the size of dice of various colors, and disposed
in regular order. It appeared to have been
constructed upwards of 1,400 years.
Aug. 15, 1733, a Roman pavement of mosa
ic wor-t was discovered in digging for a
foundation in Bishopsgate street, which must
have been executed considerably more than
1,700 years.
April 3,1739, a mile beyond Stjlton, a lead
en coffin was dug up, containing a fresh
skeleton, and there were also found many
ancient coins in silver and brass; an urn con
taining ashes, on which was represented a fe
male. It is supposed that these relics must
have been there since the year 1308.
Sept. 4, 1747, a curious tesselated pave
ment was discovered in Lincolnshire, being
twelve feet wide and thirty long, wrought in
circles, with a bust in the centre, representing
a man in the same mosaic work as the pave
ment. i
Sept. 23, 1751, several workmen employed
excavating upon the site of the ancient city
of Aventicum, built by Tespasian. and des
troyed in the fifteenth century, discovered
mosiac work sixty feet long and forty feet
broad, with figures and ornaments well pre
served. They also found several broken col
umns, and valuable marble statues.—Masonic

ON FRIDAY, AT 9 A. M.,
The Weather.—The past two days have left no
room for complaint in this particular. We are en.
joying bright, beautiful days, of just sufficient
coldness to render a tire comfortable at morn and
eve. This change has produced the usual spells of
cold with those subject to them, and many sympa
thise with us, doubtless, in having our eyes almost
“melted to tears” from its effects. -It is difficult
now for some wives to distinguish whether “red
eyes” are caused by bad colds, or intimacy with
“old John.”

Kgf- There was considerable activity amongst
the cotton dealers yesterday and the day before.
An unusual quantity was brought in from the
‘ country i and tiierc was a general rnsli of purchas
ers for it. The streets are lined with it in front
iif the different warehouses, and extensive pre
parations are making for the shipment of the sta
ple by railway. Prices qnoted in our last market
report, may still be considered the ruling figures
in the market.

the waterfall sensation yesterday. One of the.

ruffled by the wind, hnt her agility w as equal to
the occasion, and although there were soveral men : This leading Hotel, Renovated anilRe-furuialied,

So often given to niy friends,-—to beware of all
those spuriousand deleterious com pounds which,
under tlie specious and false titles of Imported
Wines, Brandies, Holland Gin, Liquors, Ac., have
been eqhidlly destructive to the health of our
citizens as prejudicial to the interests of the le

.Many years of my past life have been expen

these wltelesale frauds; no time nor expense has
been spared to accomplish this salutary pur
pose, and to place before my friends and the
public generally, at the lowest possible market
price, and in such quantities aa might suit tlieir
convenience, a trilfy genuine imported article.
Twenty-five years' business., transactions with
fthe largest' and most reaps?tafa^e e^portin^ houses
in France and Great Britain have afforded me
unsurpassed facilities for supplying our home

I would, however, recommend in all case.s
