Dress Trimmings.—The ladies will fine a beau tiful stock of laces, Insertions and dress trimmings of every description, of the most fashionable styles at 3. Peyser & Co.’s. tf Pcoilistic.—Two “old Confcds,” (so-called) apparently forgetting the fact that “this cruel war is o’er,” on yesterday, wereindneedby tbatbreeder ol human dissension, “Old John,” to forget their friendly relations, and in the absence of any body cise to tight, to try their bands on each other. The ball was opened by a vigorous attack in the rear (of Grier and Mastcrson’s livery stable, we mean) and kept np until the whole front on either side was engaged. The battle was continued at a very “short range” for about ten minutes, but in the excitement of the contest, augmented by the influence of “Old John,” one party aimed too high and the other too low, so that but little dam age was done on cither side, farther than one par tially ornamented eye. Neitherparty gained ninety as there was a “going down” of the currency on both sides to the amount of flve dollars, for failing to keep the city authorities “in the dark.” £9~Ladies, gents’ and misses’ hats, a full mia fashionable assortment, just received at S. Peyser A Co.’s. tf The Brown House.—As will be seen by the announcement in another column, this institution will be re-opened on the 15th inst. In the mean time Mr. Brown, with a score of painters, and others, is engaged in giving the house a thorough cleansing from garret to cellar. Mat- trasses are repacked, bedsteads cleansed, rooms whitewashed, and everything necessary to place the house in the same condition it was, immedi- diately after its completion The bar has been re-opened and is now presided over by Mr. Geo. Lawrence, well known in days past, as one of the most efficient marshals of the city. Another Importation.—We observed that those enterprising dealers, Messrs. S. Peyser A Co., received another large stock of goods yes terday. The motto of these gentlemen appears to be “a nimble sixpence is better than a slow shil ling,” and they are condncting their business on that principle. We advise onr lady ready readcra to have their port monies well lined when they visit this establishment, for the attractions arc great, tf Mayor’s Court, Oct. 7th.—Lewis Vaunnker, perhaps not liking the rushing and pushing, scrong- ing and gouging, common at the market house, followed bis inclination to peddle on the streets, for which he was required to exhibit his apprecia tion of good city government by disbursing ten greenbacks for the support of the same. Pat Flynn, who, we presume, thought his natu ralization papers gave him a right to appropriate to his own use any property that belonged to “onr koonthry,” went to work to supply himself with wood off the city reserve, but was informed of his error by the city authorities, and charged five dol lars and costs for the information. Stephen Wright went ahead without being “sure he was Wright," and got hold of something that didn’t belong to him; and to fix the fact in his mind that “honesty is the best policy,” he was permitted to work on the streets twenty days, and be adorned with a sett of the city jewels. Keep Warm.—S. Peyser & Co. are now ofiering a large lot of fine bed blankets, white and colored. Another Theft.—Quite a cute theft was prac ticed upon Mr. Howard, at his store on Cherry street yesterday afternoon. A negro man who had been loafing aronnd the premises for. some lialf hour or so, sncceeded in slipping a pocket book from off a shelf behind the conntcr while Mr. II. was waiting on a customer, and knew nothing of the matter until, wanting to make change in set tling with his customer, he looked for his pocket book and found that it was gone. The negro had full time to get ont of the way, and as Mr. H. failed to notice him very minutely, lie will perhaps make a “fat take” of it. There was from one hundred and seventy-five to two hundred dollars in money in the pocket book. Peyser A- Co. tf MoNTiTART.-During the past week we have noticed considerable improvement in the money market. This may be accounted for, in part, by the buoy ancy of the cotton market. Another cause, which has contributed somewhat to the diffusion of the circulating medium, is, that a quantity of gold, hoarded for some time, by parties, who either had no inclination or necessity to sell, or were await ing higher prices, is now being disposed of. Gold is yet, in fair demand. It is sought after princi pally, by parties, who are purchasing cotton in the interior. We can hear of none being bought on speculation. We quote from 45 to 46%, selling rates. The demand for loans has declined. They can still be obtained from % to 1 per cent on call. There appears to be no demand whatever for ex" change on New York. This would seem to indicate that our merchants have principally paid cash for their goods. We can discern no change In the issues of the State. Parties, holding them, do not seem anxious to selL Cotton.—The activity reported in the cotton market last week has steadily increased since that time, and prices have advanced in proportion to the increased demand for the staple. During the first three days of the week it changed hands quite rapidly, as we know more than one lot to have been in the bands of two or three traders within the same day. Considerable quantities have been brought in from the country, nearly all of which was sold by those bringing it, to the traders. The planters, however, are advised of the upward tendency in the Northern markets; and we have heard them express a determination to hold what they have on hand still longer, only disposing of enough at present to supply money to meet their immediate wants. But as the want of money is pretty general, and prices begin to tempt them, there will doubtless be a change in their determina tion which will soon place all the cotton in the country immediately on the market The ship ments by railroad, have been somewhat heaview than for the previous week; but on account of th^ continued shallowness of the river, that channel is still closed to shippers. About thirty boxes, most of which are complete, are making preparations to proceed down with caigos as soon as the state of the river will permit We quote as the ruling figures, at the close of the week, from thirty to thirty-four cents, and we are told that thirty-five could be obtained for extra lots of the higher grades. The largest sales effected were middling lots at thirty-three cents. Dry Goods.—The trade in dry goods Is not yet altogether as buoyant as many anticipated it would be on the opening of the season, but it is steadily increasing, and the many merchants who have laid In heavy stocks, arc still hopeful of disposing of them without difficulty. So far as we can learn, most of the trade for the past week has been in the wholesale line, and the scarcity of funds among the masses of the people, cause most of them to delay making purchases as long as possible. The trade has been principally in ladies’ dress goods, and some extensive stocks of this class of goods have been exhausted, and still laiger supplies or dered. The price of cotton goods in the Northern markets continues gradually to increase, and a very slight advance has been made on the prices of cer tain classes of goods in this market, but as a gen. oral thing, prices remain steady. Large stocks of goods areallll being njbeld ain.oM eyeiy day and several, to our knowledge, who have not here* tofore done so, are preparing to enter into the dry goods business. Boots and Shoes.—One or two additional bous es have opened extensive stocks of boots and shoes within the past week, and the market may be considered well supplied in this particular, ex cepting, perhaps, the finest quality of a dress boot, of which, we believe, there is some little defi ciency. Hats.—The market Is well supplied with every style and variety, and dealers are disposing of them - more rapidly than almost any other class of goods' in th6 market. * Groceries.—There has been considerable activ ity in the grocery market throughout tbe week, and the stocks of some of the principal articles in \ this line have been pretty nearly exhausted, but we understand that sufficient quantities are on the way to this market to supply every deficiency.— We quote the following figures for the main arti cles, together with such changes as have taken place in the state of the market: > • Bacon—22025. The demand has been some what better than last week, but the stock on hand; is good and equal to the demand. Flour—$7 5008 50 $ 100 lbs. A good supply of all grades. Sugar.—32035. New York, Oct 5—Gold continues firm from the absence of any important demand for cotton or western produce from Europe. To the Citizens of Georgia l The termination of a sanguinary contest, which for tho past four years has presented an impassa ble barrier to all social or commercial intercourse between the two great sections of our country, having at length happily cleared away all ob stacles to a removal of those relations which formerly bound us together in a fraternal union, I take the earliest opportunity afforded me by this auspicious event, to greet my Southern friends, and to solicit from them a renewal of that extensive business connection which for a quarter of a century has been uninterrupted Bave by the great public calamity to which I have adverted. It is scarcely necessary, on the threshold of a business re-union, I should ropeat the warning so often given to my friends,—to beware of all those spurious and deleterious compounds which, under the speciouB and false titles of Imported Wines, Brandies, Holland Gin,Liquors, Ac., have been equally destructive to tho health of our citizens as prejudicial to the intereets of the le gitimate Importer. Many years of my past life have been expen ded in an open and candid attempt to expose these wholesale frauds; no time nor expense has been spared to accomplish this salutary pur pose, and to place before my friends and the public generally, at the lowest possible market price, and in such quantities as might suit their convenience, a truly genuine imported article. Twenty-five years* business transactions with the largest andmostrespectableexportinghouseB in France and Great Britain have afforded me unsurpassed facilities for supplying our home market with Wines, Liquors, and Liqmures oi the best and most approved brands in Europe, in addition to my own distillery in Holland for the manufacture of, the “Schiedam Schnapps/* The latter f so long tested and approved by the Medical’Faculties of the United States, West In dies and South America as an invaluable Thera peutic, a wholesome, pleasant, and perfectly safe beverage in all climates and during all seasons, quickly excited the cupidity of the home manu facturers and venders of a spurious article under the same name. I trust that I have, after much toil and ex pense, surrounded all my* importations with feguards and directions with which with ordi nary circumspection will insure their delivery, as I receive them from Europe, to all my cus tomers. « j. would, .however, recommend in all cases where it is'possible, that orders be sent direct to my Depot, 22 Beaver Street, New York, or that purchases be made of my accredited agents. In addition to a large stock of Wines, Brandies, Ac., in-wood, I have a considerable supply of old tried foreign wines, embracing vintages of many past years, bottled up before the commencement of the war, which I can especially recommend to all connaisseurs of these rare luxuries. Iu conclusion, I would specially call the atten tion of my Southern customers to the advantage to be derived by transmitting their orders with out loss of time, or calling personally at the Depot, in order to insure the fulfillment of their favors from the present large and well selected assortment.
