Dry Goods Market
New Tore, Sept. 30.
The largeness of the import of dry goods
naturally attracts attention, but as yet it has
not been found that the supply is ip excess
of the wants of the market. On the 'contra
ry, there has been .a lack of desirable goods
throughout the season, and prices have
ruled very firm, and high. The total receipts
at this port for the four weeks of September
have been $11,998,257, against $4,147,449 for.
the same period of last year. The receipts
for the past week amounted to $3,129,787
against $917,990, for th§ .corresponding
week of last year. The auctions of the
past week have,,been well attended, and
goods have realized high prices, except Sax-
any dress g^ods ; apd-.loyri.,priced, English nts
worsted fabrics, which are in excessive sup
ply, and have sold at lower prices. In do
mestic cotton goods the market has shown
a general recovery o# time, t an cF-'p rices du
ring the week. The marking toMltriaM
a few days ago by some leading jobbers, was,
no doubt, simply a bear trick, and as such it
was successful. ■ The' parties to ! it then
bought up everything they could lay their
hands on in c^t^inl soarce styles of goodsl
The prices consequently rebounded, and the;
late Bears are now i». tnrUjBqp^jand are re
alizing handsome profits upon ’their pur
chases during..the .depression.... During .the
week about h4lf the-reduction made during'
the previous week has been recovered, and
the market clqsgafirm and yrith a good, steady
demand for goods; the tstockn^ooMjro htmds
being exceeding scarce. ‘ ' 1,f j ---m<tno

Cotton goods generally are bringing higher

a fair business doing for the supply of the
country and. city trade at the'improvement.—
Buyers coie forward freely,’ and all, desirable

being upward, an'd holders are very firm in
their views. . ...

The Public Debt. ...Jq
From the Cinciniiatl Gazette.]
The exhibit published this morning of the
condition of the public debt on the SOtfi, of
September, will be read by the loyal people
with a lively interest; and • its conclusions
received with extreihe •’pleasnjyp • ’STe have
the gratifying fact; pfesentecT‘for . the first
time since the:commencement of the war,
of a reduction in the -■ public debt, --The
treasury department, during the_jnonth of
September,' not' dn^ifiet^ifll • expenses from
the ordIaaVy -few^nue, btttpaid off $12,-742,-
000 of the priricip^l.pf the debt.' 'nierehas
also been withdrawn and cancelled during
the month $6,012,000 of legal tender notes,
and the interest on’ the- debt has been re
duced $500,0001 The total debt on the 30th
Hit. was $2,744,947,726 17, and the interest
$137,529,216 25. The amount of legal ten
der notes in circftlarion is $678,126,940. • The
treasury held iii coin , $32,740,783.43,- and in
currency $56,236,441 13.' This whole ■ ex
hibit is unexpectedly favorable, and it will
exercise a healthful influence on the finances
of the conntry. Simultaneously with this
cheering statement,-’the secretary offers fifty
million of 5-20 b.ojftcte ja't 103, in exchange for.
certificates of inidefitedness maturing before
January 1st,, and compound interest bearing
notes and one and two ; year treasury notes.
This is the first' tfecidcd step in the line of
contractio'h; and it inaugurates a new policy,-
which Mr. McCulloch, has th'e ability to sus
tain, and we have therefore assurance that
inflation has reached the. culminating, point.
There is also a; promise - that henceforward
the country will* expenehce’-tho wholesome
influence of p steady contraction.'''
We enter no[w upon a new era. Instead .of
having to face an increase of a million or
two a day in the pnblic,debt,'the treasuiy is ;
more than paying its way.. This achievement
13 second only in importance to the announce
ment that marked the end ’of the war. : ■
Gen. Pillow’s Plans.—Gen. Pillowy be
fore the war, was. very wealthy, and owned
one of the finest cotton plantations in Ar
kansas. The. war has swept away everything
he possessed except his land, 1 He is now in
Washington. The Nashville '.Union says lie
proposes, witn the aidmf eastern capitalists,
to rebuild :ae 1.-i-.dences, gia houses, bams,
negro quarters, fences/<Sx’.; oh liis plantation,
to restock it with agricultural implements
horses, cattle, hogs, ecc., and to invite his
former slaves to return and work for him
giving them good wages. In addition, be
will give employment to such other freedmen
as he may need. It is his intention to ■ pro
vide for his laborers liberally—furnishing
them good quarters, and food,.'schools for
their children, and. churches for all. He will
f o into this good work with all the energy cf
is nature—and there are few more enter
prising and intelligent men in' the country
and no effort will be spared to make it suc
cessful. His experiment is a very important
one, and will be watchedvkith unflagging in
terest North and South.
He was pardoned about four weeks, since.
Exchange.
An aged gentleman who was, perhaps, one
of the^ first white men that appeared upon
these bluffs, says the Memphis ledger, recent
ly remarked that iu 1776 he went to war on
account of the stamp act, and got the nigger.
In 1861 we went to war about the nitreer
and got the stamp act. .

A CARD.
X EXPECT to return to Washington City in two
11(2) weeks. To those whohave sent their appli
cations for special pardon by mail, or through the
regular military channel, I would say, that it is of
tliu utmost importance that you have Sonic one in
Washington to personally superintend your inter
est; If tMs is not done, your case wiil have to
yield to those personally represented, thereby put
ting it off to a period in the future, too remote to
form any but a speculative opinion. Having spent
a month at the White House, I am safe in saying
this much. In the meantime if the President was
to die, his radical successor supported by an irre
sponsible congress, would withdraw the amnesty
privilege, and sweep from you the remnant of
properly you have left. Urged by these views a
great mass of people from every Southern 8tate is
now pressing the President, they being desirous by
obtaining pardon, toplaee themselves and property
where a change iu the administration cannot effect
them. 1 desire to say that I have returned with
pardons for each man that I represented, and those
desiring me to direct and control their cases while
passing the various departments of government
will address me for two weeks at Americas. 1:1 '
