£jje flailg Ctltgraf|. A P**T Woman.—United State* detective Cook, of Parkersburg, reached thlt city yes terday morning on the at earner New State, baring in charge a female (harper, whose name and place of residence he was unable to teccrtain. The woman ia charged with swindling Federal officer*, and it M said the baa been married to four different military officer* within th<* last three month*. The Sr.t she married near GhUpolls. He was a young man who had just been mastered out of service, and had between 91000 and $1200 in greenback*. About a week after they were married the young wife alleged to hare rcceired a letter from her jxirenu requesting bar to come home. She pretended to leave for home, but before her departure »l*e c*an- aged to secure the greater portion of hsr hus band i money. She was soon in company with another officer. A hasty marriage, & hasty robbery and a hasty flight ensued. A third officer was soon duped, and a week or two since another officer fell a victim to her caresses and attentions. Soon after the fourth marriage aho left her husband and went to Parkersburg, where she was overtaken and arrested by officer Cook. When she was brought to this city her delicate little wrists were i ncased in a stout pair of bracelets, which were securely locked. It is mid the woman has succeeded in stealing over 93,000 by her duplicity and roguery. Sho was ye»- trrdiy taken over into Ohio, where it was thought she conld be identified and brought to justice. She is a young woman, not more than 22 years of age, and is rather prepossess ing in appearance.— Wheeling (fa) ltegitUr. Loan Baolouam on America.—In his opening address before the social science congress at Sheffield, Lord Brougham thus referred to America: The termination of war in America must give all out friends and supporters the great est satisfaction. It was never regarded by us as anything but a grievous calamity, and we hoped that ont of evil good might come to the slave, altbongb it was dear that the emancipation by the North had only been a inctcure of hostility, and the support of sla very. that utterly axecrable institution by tlic'South, only a partial cause of the seces sion. But the condition in which the war has left the country, especially the South, is painful to contemplate, as the difficulties of the government are great and numerous.— There teems, however, reason to believe that the president has resolved upon temperate measures tasrard the defeated Confederates, and all must admire the courage, and the skill by which the victory baa been gained, while both parties have alike distinguished themselves in the war, the South having to extol Lee, while Sherman, on the aide of tho North, la justly admired. The great difficulty arising from the slaves would have been much lessened, if not wholly avoided, had the measure of emancipation been gradual like oan. They might then have hnd to show their colored people engaged in free labor, as we have iisu no leas than 100,000 so em ployed in our colonics. Visit to the President of a Delega tion or Ladies.—Ills excellency, tile Presi dent gave an audience yesterday to a numer ous delegation of ladies from Baltimore, inted to present n petition signed by 1.1,000 ALLISONS &i KIRKMAN Cotton Factors AND THE MAHM0TH DRV GOODS STORE! Latest Arrivals from the East, Inducements Offered BY Nd OTHER HOUSE IN THE CITT. Change of Firm. [ inbe- sht- >r of the late lamented John J. Crittenden, addressed the President in feeling and ap propriate terms, to which he responded in n most felicitous manner. regretting tbnt pub lic policy prevented his yiolding to their persuasive and touching argument-. The interview was a protracted one and of the moat agreeable diameter, and the fair petitioners left the city, carrying with them the most pleasurable Uniin - ions of tho Pres ident. In declining, tho president regretted that the national character of the question restrain ed all private sympathy which they might have awakened in him, and made the impor tant statement that complete arrangements have been made for the early legal trial of Mr, Darb, according to the taws of the land. -i/MM HteRigeneur Nor. 1th. Hotel Living in New York. —The pro prietor! of the Broadway hotels are talking serionsly of raising their prices of board from |4 50 to 98 per day, not liccause they have grown immensely wealthy at the former fig ure, but because'tltey believe they can obtain the latter rate ase«»ily; and I believe they c»n. As it is. the landlords are unable to ac commodate the crowds of applicants for boanl, and they are inclined to establish a tariff out of pure benevolence to their guests of coarse, that will give customers more room. The prices which some persons pay at the fashionable hotels arc remarkable. There ire families at the Ffth Avenue, who give 9100 to 9800 a week for their mere lodging snd boarding priviledges, wliila their'^ex tras'' will reach 9800 to 9400 more.—New York letter. Negro-phobia. The Boston correspondent of the Chicago Timet writes: To illustrate how far the excellent doctrine perfect equality, especially for the negro, haa already gone wit h us, it is fa irl r just to state the fact that, at a caucus in w tip six, in this nr. held the other’evening, for nominating a - n rTpreNcntatiYcs to the legislature, T.-' ’ gentleman, (most Ukclv “0?
