The following details of » dreadful sod- dent which occurcd last Tnesday, near Hope Untir*. about twenty-one milts from Colum bia, cu the Greenville Railroad, bare been furnished us by a gentleman who was on the road at the time of the melancholy event It appear* that a previous accident bad ■KC'irrrt on the railroad a abort distance lie law Hope Station, the can having run off ' the track. The paasengen far Columbia were thua detained until an engine with a box car could be sent op, which, unfortunately, met with a similar mishap. The passengers were thus detained on the road several hours, and reached Hope Station late in the night, which was exceedingly dark and rainy. As the can neared Hope Station an agent of Pool's line of hacks came on board to (ell tickets, and several passengers who wished to con tinue oa their way purchased them. It was afterwards found that more tickets had liccn •old than the accommodations offered to passer)gen. They Were, all parked In two Lack ambulances, the agent telling the pas sengers that this waa only temporary and that better arrangements would lie made on reaching the Hotel or public house at IIojh: Station, On reaching the station, in consequence of the darknem of the night, a general dispmi tion among the paaaengen was exhibited to wait over till morning. Mr. Howard, pro prietor of the hotel, laid he had no nccoi* inflations, his home being already full. It waa then decided to go on, and the nmlm lances were again tilled. As thrv were aliont starting some of the party asked for a Inn tern. A gentleman cautioned them not to start without it, for fear of an accident, and one of the driver* said be could not undertake to drive in such weather and undersuch eir- rumstanres without a light. Mr. Howard said he had no Ugbt, and that Mr. Pool did not furnish bia hacks with lanterns. After some remonstrance from the passengers against being sent off without a light, the whole party started. The driver of the leading ambulance had not proceeded Imt n short distance when he stopped and stated lie could go no further in safety without a lantern. It was proposed by some to proceed until they reached some house on the road, and by oth er* to go hack to the station. The latter plan was agreed upon and the determination scarce ly made when cries were beard in the direction of the rear hack. The driver exclaimed -there has lieen an upset," and went hack to the spot from whence the noise proceeded. Before his return seme of the unfortunate pas sengers from the rear hack came crawling up the galley on their hands and knees to the road. _ They knew not what had happened, hut snbl their vehicle had liccn precipitated down the gulley, a distance of about thirteen fret, into a creek, ami that some of the party had been killed. The driver shortly after re turned and confirmed the painful intelligence. A messenger was despatched to the station, and » light after some difficulty procured, when it was found that the mules and some of the passengers were buried underneath the hark. They were romjtcltcd to cut the ve hicle to pieces before the Imdics could be drawn out. Four persons were taken out dead. These were Mr*. Van Winkle, wife of Mr. John Van Winkle of this city, on her way home; Mrs. Anna Hedowa, on English lady; Rev. Dr. Cohen, professor in the preshyterinn theological seminary at Columbia, and a small colored girl, servant of Mr*. Van Winkle. The IkmIIcs were all brought to the city Saturday. On the return of the party to tin- station with the liodie* of the killed, niurh indignation waa expressed by the passengers at tlie retinal of those who had previously denied them a lantern. No inquest was held on the Imdirs, there being no magistrate with in twenty miles of the place where the ncei- dent oecnred. We have not learned the names of the parties injured.—Charleston Cmu-ier 20(1. Uoi.no Soc rn to Locate.—Very few, per imps, imagine the number of Union soldier* who, since the dote of the war, linve located in the Houtli. Many a man, under the garb of a private toklier, carried a keen observa tion and a shrewd calcnlation, which enabled liim to appreciate the undeveloped resources of the country through which lie passed in the march of the Union armies. Not n day goes but that numlier* who have carried a musket during the war or served their coun- try in an officer's uniform, having visited their friends at home, and arranged matters to their satisfaction, pose through here bound tor soma locality in a lately rcliellious State. Only this morning we met half n down who, a few months ago, were serving their country nnder General Thomas in Tennessee. They were then on their way to Northern A! abama, where they propose to locate perma nentiy, having, become enamored of the State. They stated that as'teany more would follow • tln ra from their n.it he country in the course -fa low months.
